What to Do in Ohiopyle: Rafting, Biking, Hiking, Fishing, State Park

Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania is the outdoor adventure center of the state. Located only an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, half hour from Morgantown, WV and within easy driving distance of DC and Cleveland, Ohiopyle is a mecca for outdoor activities (year-round actually!). Lower Youghiogheny Rafting

The Lower Yough is 7.5 miles of Class III – IV whitewater rapids. It is considered a drop & pool river: the rapids are separated by calm deep pools, allowing you to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. Ohiopyle rafting accident July 13, 2019

On July 13, 2019, my boyfriend and I were hiking on fern cliff trail and stopped at the outlook point which sits above the falls. We noticed a raft coming down the river and trying to turn around, but due to the strong current, they were unable to do so. I began recording, but stopped when we saw the raft come up empty. One of the passengers made it to shore below where we were standing and asked us to call 911. I called 911 and Explained what happened. First responders were on their way and fortunately everyone made it out safely. The most terrifying moment was when one of the passengers was unaccounted for and their helmet was floating down the river in front of the empty raft. The person who was unaccounted for seemed to be stuck in the turbine at the base of the falls. It's a moment we will never forget witnessing. It was unnerving to say the least.
