Wildlife Alliance Reduces Illegal Trade in Cambodia អង្គការWildlife Alliance
Wildlife Alliance Reduces Illegal Trade in Cambodia
Cambodia has long been a hub of wildlife trafficking. Nick Marx, Wildlife Programs Director of the Wildlife Alliance, says his efforts at combating the illegal wildlife trade in Southeast Asia has saved more than 56,000 animals from certain destruction.
The problem that we face is trying to change the culture, where for many years, wildlife has been used for food or medicine.
A wildlife advocate who is also known as the man who changed the image of a zoo in Cambodia from the place where wildlife going to die, told participants that combating the illegal wildlife trade in Cambodia has improved, but his team is too small to do the job.
Nick Marx spoke to VOA Khmer's Pin Sisovann after his presentation at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C. on October 16, 2013. The topic: Combating The Illegal Wildlife Trades in Southeast Asia.

Direct on the ground intervention by working with government rangers to ensure strict law enforcement and good governance. We build rangers’ professional capacity and provide full support for their livelihoods. This enables them to focus completely on their duties to take strong action, with no exception. In this way, we fight corruption, which is one of the main causes of underdeveloped countries failing to enforce wildlife laws.

Wild For Life Concert in Cambodia
On January 31, 2015, the U.S. Ambassador’s Youth Council (AYC) and Wildlife Alliance held a special concert to raise awareness about wildlife trafficking in Cambodia. The event, which was held at the Night Market in Phnom Penh was a huge success, and brought in around 5,000 people!
Aimed at engaging the public, particularly youths, the night featured an all-star lineup including an opening speech by Ambassador William E. Todd and performances by well-known singers Laura Mom and Jimmy Kiss, comedian Sokea, shadow puppet performances from Sovanna Phum Arts Association, and more. The Kouprey Express Mobile Environmental Education Unit (KE) did a presentation on wildlife species in Cambodia, the threats posed to them, and things people can do to help, including reporting crimes against wildlife to our 24-hour nationwide wildlife rescue hotline.
We would like to thank the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia for funding the event, as well as congratulate the AYC and Kouprey Express for doing such an excellent job promoting and hosting the Wild for Life concert! This is just the beginning of a long-term partnership between the two groups, and we look forward to other exciting collaborations in the future.

PTWRC is dedicated to helping and caring for animals who have been subjected to the illegal wildlife trade. The animals that are saved by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team are relocated to our center and each individual is assessed for release based on their health and strength to survive independently.
Animals deemed healthy and capable of life in the wild are immediately released into the forests protected by Wildlife Alliance and Forestry Administration. If release is not an option they are given a permanent home at PTWRC.
Certain animals need guidance before they are able live safely in the forest on their own. These individuals are relocated to our Wildlife Rehabilitation Station (WRS). Here they are given the tools they need to successfully provide for themselves in the wild.

Rangers rescued an infant macaque from a poacher in the Cardamom Rainforest. The young monkey was stolen from the wild and from it's mother's care to be sold into the wildlife trade. After confiscating the monkey, Wildlife Alliance rangers made sure she was fed and transported her Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center where she will be introduced to a troop of other young, misfit macaques and begin her journey back to the wild.

Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre (PTWRC) is a wildlife centre located roughly 25 miles (40 km) by road south of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The centre was established in 1995 and with an area of over 6,000 acres of protected regenerating forest, this is the largest zoo in Cambodia.[1] Since 2001, PTWRC has been run by the government institution of Cambodian Forestry Administration in partnership with an environmental non-profit organization called Wildlife Alliance.
