Does Oregon need an official state pie? Marionberry says 'yes'
Kevin Bechtel, senior vice president at Beaverton'-based Shari's Cafe and pies, explains why the Legislature should designate marionberry pie as Oregon's official state pie. Shari's dished out slices of marionberry pie on Thursday afternoon outside the House Majority Office. The House Rules Committee held a public hearing on House Concurrent Resolution 19, which would designate marionberry as the official pie:
House Concurrent Resolution 19
Sponsored by Representative MALSTROM
Whereas the Marionberry was introduced by George F. Waldo of the United States Department of Agriculture in Corvallis, Oregon, in 1956 as part of Oregon State University’s blackberry breeding program; and
Whereas the Marionberry is a hybrid blackberry that is a cross between the “Chehalem” and “Olallieberry” cultivars; and
Whereas the Marionberry is named after Marion County, where it was tested extensively; and
Whereas 90 percent of the world’s Marionberries are grown near Salem; and
Whereas the Marionberry is a trailing, vigorous grower that produces canes up to 20 feet in length and up to six tons of berries per acre; and
Whereas the Willamette Valley’s climate, with moist spring rains and summers that are warm during the day and cool at night, is ideal for growing Marionberries; and
Whereas Oregon is the primary grower of Marionberries globally, producing 30 million pounds annually with 500 Oregon growers and 20 Oregon packers engaged in the production and packing of Marionberries; and
Whereas the Marionberry is a nutritious food that is very high in antioxidants, vitamins and fiber and is recognized as having a profound and positive effect on health; and
Whereas one of the most delicious ways to eat Marionberries is in a Marionberry pie; and
Whereas Marionberry pies are mouthwatering and delightful when served by themselves, à la mode or garnished with whipped cream; and
Whereas an ideal way to celebrate the wonders of a Pacific Northwest summer is to share a summertime meal with friends or family that concludes with a slice of fresh Marionberry pie; now,
therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Oregon:
That the Marionberry pie is the official pie of the State of Oregon.

Southern Oregon vineyards seeing strong demand
By Will Maetzold/KTVL.com
JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. -- Demand continues to rise for wines made in southern Oregon.
Agate Ridge Vineyard began planting more than 6,000 new vines on Monday morning. It's a sign the wine industry in southern Oregon continues to grow.
The fruit that comes from southern Oregon is very desirable throughout the state of Oregon, Agate Ridge Vineyard owner Kimberly Kinderman said. Not only are producers using our fruit here to produce artisan wines but a lot of fruit is sold from this valley also.
Agate Ridge Vineyard said the demand its seen at its winery has meant the need to plant more vines.
We're going to be able to increase the production of our Malbec and also introduce a brand new varietal, Kinderman said. We're also expanding our Pinot Noir block.
Kinderman said all parts of her business have been growing since the winery opened in 2005.
The staff said it will be three to four years before the vines planted this week are ready to be harvested.
The viticulturist at Agate Ridge Vineyard, Matt Cates, said the grapes grown on site make a big difference in the quality of the wine.
People tell us all the time they can taste our soil, he said. They can taste our microclimate (and) how it differs from other areas in the valley.
It helps make vineyards like Agate Ridge more and more popular in southern Oregon.
The owner at DANCIN Vineyards also said demand is up for its products. He said 20,000 new vines were planted this year at the vineyard.
