BIG PLANS TO TRANSFORM WILLIAM PETER BOULEVARD
A meeting of the OECS Regional Tourism Competitiveness Project on Wednesday, focused primarily on the enhancement of the City of Castries. According to officials, the idea is to make the City more attractive for Locals and Visitors. One of the main activities on that agenda was addressing the flow of pedestrians into the William Peter Boulevard and making it a commercial space. Several consultants and stakeholders participated in that meeting.
According to the OECS Regional Tourism Competitiveness Project Manager, Dr. Lorraine Nicholas, the William Peter Boulevard is a central space within the City of Castries which is easy to navigate and is already attracting a significant amount of pedestrian traffic. She says the idea is to transform that space and create one where people can spend more time and money.
Having selected a preferred option of the four choices proposed, Dr. Nicholas says, the consultants will then elaborate on that option, and prepare the final design which would then serve as the template for the project.
The meeting was held at the Financial Administrative Center at Pointe Seraphine, Castries.

Cambridge graduate found dead near the celebrity marina he developed in St Lucia
Little wonder St Lucia is regularly voted one of the world’s great romantic getaways. The view of the Pitons, two imposing volcanic spires that rise out of an azure blue Caribbean with waves crashing at their base, is reckoned to be worth the airfare alone.Arrayed around them, for the magnificent backdrop they provide, are a cluster of five-star hotels such as the Jade Mountain resort, whose suites cost up to £3,000.Last weekend, the well-heeled guests would have just been sitting down to lunch when, at the other end of the island, police were called to the home of a British expat. They were greeted by a sight that was certainly not intended for tourist eyes.According to officers, Bob Hathaway, 66, was lying in a pool of blood on his bed.The businessman and yacht designer, a well-known figure in St Lucia’s sailing and hotel worlds, had been stabbed to death in his hillside house in Piat in the north of the island.Such violence would have horrified St Lucia’s rich visitors, but will have come as no surprise to those who live there.Away from the spotless beaches and infinity pools, the island is gripped by a violent crime epidemic rooted in drugs and gang culture. In 2017, 60 people were killed [and 43 last year], which on an island of less than 180,000 people, gives it a murder rate 16 times higher than the UK.The night after Mr Hathaway’s murder, a 20-year-old man was shot dead in a gang-related killing. However, Mr Hathaway’s death has particularly rattled the leaders of a Commonwealth country smaller than Anglesey. Its economy relies almost entirely on tourism and violence has, in recent years, claimed the lives of a string of British people, both tourists and expats, denting St Lucia’s image. They included Norwich yachtsman Roger Pratt, murdered on his boat in 2014 in an apparent botched robbery. In the same year, Ollie Gobat, 38, a former Surrey juniors cricket player from a wealthy family in Esher, was found murdered in his Range Rover. The hotel developer had been shot twice in the head before the vehicle was set on fire. This week, following Mr Hathaway’s death, St Lucia prime minister Allen Chastanet admitted police were demoralised and had a ‘long way to go in providing the basics’.Other senior politicians fretted publicly of the damage to the island’s image and economic viability.Ernest Hilaire, St Lucia’s former High Commissioner in London, said the death toll of British people on the island had been a ‘sore point’ with the UK government. Many of the island’s leaders knew Mr Hathaway personally. He had been a generally well-liked personality on the island.Originally from the village of Codford St Peter in Wiltshire, he went to boarding school in Surrey then to Cambridge University, where he studied engineering and hydrodynamics. He spent the next 16 years working for Haringey Council in North London.Aged 37, he spent a sabbatical year sailing in the Mediterranean before switching careers to yacht building, working first at a yard near Southampton.
Chastanet Says SLP's 15 Point Plan Is An Attempt To Contest UWP 5 Point Plan
The Political Leader of the United Workers Party says he has every reason to believe that a 15 point plan which will be presented on the market steps by Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony on Thursday is an attempt to contest and match up to the Five to Stay Alive policy pronouncement made by him last week in the William Peter Boulevard. Allen Chastanet, however, explains that the plan is just one part of the UWP’s overall economic plan. Referring to the move to go to the Castries market steps to outline budget plans as disrespectful, Mr. Chastanet warns the SLP of its attempts to dupe the citizenry. Jason Hullingseed tells us more.

Castries Mayor says Voyager fire may have a silver lining.
As the public continues to react to Thursday’s devastating fire, which gutted, among other things, a longstanding department store, Castries Mayor Peterson Francis says on the bright side, it may signal a modernization of the historic William Peter Boulevard. Senior Correspondent Miguel Fevrier was on the scene in the aftermath of the blaze and filed this report.
CREDIT UNION OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE PUBLIC

CALL FOR PROTECTION OF BUILDINGS OF HISTORICAL VALUE
The National Archives is calling for the implementation of policies to ensure that buildings of
historical value such as the one destroyed in Thursday’s fire in Castries are preserved. The Adjodha
building which at one time housed the Gaiety Theatre went up in flames
Last Thursday around the middle of the day the Adjodha building on the William Peter Boulevard
caught on fire causing the destruction of building which once housed the popular Gaiety Theatre.
This has prompted the National Archives to call for policies to preserve such buildings of historical
value. For example the organization has noted the lack of sufficient fire hydrants in the City.
Mr. Freeman recalls the 1948 fire which destroyed the entire city of Castries. Today he says the
infrastructure to preserve St. Lucia’s heritage is still lacking
The National Archives is hoping that this matter will be addressed
IRD STAFF DEMAND ANOTHER MOVE AFTER HEALTH & SAFETY ISSUES ARE IDENTIFIED AT NEW OFFICES
Staff of the Inland Revenue Department who were recently relocated after complaining about poor air quality say the new locations come with their own health and safety issues. The staff through their bargaining agents, the Saint Lucia Civil Service Association, have called on the government to address the situation.
Staff of the Inland Revenue Department who were housed at the Heraldine Rock Building on the Castries Waterfront were relocated to three venues. This is after a year of complaining about air quality issues.
They were moved to the Blue Coral Mall on Bridge Street; the Digicel building in the William Peter Boulevard and to the ECFH building on Bridge Street Castries.
The move was to be a temporary one designed to appease staff who had given the government an ultimatum to address their grievances.
According to the CSA’s General Secretary, Claude Paul the three new locations are not any better than the original office.
Mr Paul says the health and safety of employees, should be of paramount importance to employers.
Mr Paul says the CSA committed to working with the Department of the Public Service to resolve the issue and to do so at the soonest.
