Placerita Canyon | southern California | 21 April 2010
The opening shot with the powerline is also a view of the Los Angeles Aqueduct: the large tan pipe angling down a hillside. This shot was taken from the side of Placerita Canyon Road just west of the 14 Freeway near Newhall, Los Angeles County, California. The Los Angeles Aqueduct brings water two-hundred miles southward from the Owens Valley to the citizens of Los Angeles and southern California. It was built in the early 20th century, completed in 1913.
The remainder of the video depicts a hike through Placerita Canyon in Placerita Canyon State Park, Los Angeles County, southern California, 21 April 2010. The end of the video depicts a portion of a feeding session for a captive red-tail hawk at the Placerita Canyon Nature Center.
The twenty-first of April 2010 was a cool day with intermittent rainfall and along the main canyon trail on this day were wildflowers, fluvial sedimentary features such as sandbars, cobble bars and small waterfalls, various riparian zone tree species including Sycamore, Cottonwood and California Live Oak, and a small tar seep (4:37) from which bubbles of methane (?) escape.
Placerita Canyon State Park straddles a boundary area between the Mesozoic and Pre-Cambrian crystalline rocks of the San Gabriel Mountains on the south side of the park and the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary rock terranes on the north side of the park. The dextral San Gabriel fault -- a major but inactive tectonic feature in the region -- passes through the park's eastern reach. The boundary between the crystalline rocks to the south and the sedimentary rocks is marked by an unnamed fault the sense of slip for which is unknown. Hiking through Placerita Canyon one passes from a fairly narrow rock-walled canyon to a more open area of rolling hills, a geomorphic transition that marks the change of lithology from the older crystalline rocks to the young sedimentary rocks. Information on the geology of the area is depicted on the Thomas Dibblee maps 'Geologic Map of the Mint Canyon Quadrangle, Los Angeles County, California' and 'Geologic Map of the San Fernando-Van Nuys (North 1/2) Quadrangles, Los Angeles County, California' and references therein.
Placerita Canyon Nature Center keeps a menagerie of animals, including a red-tailed hawk (7:07) and a barn owl in outdoor cages. Small mammals and reptiles (including rattlesnakes) are kept indoors in glass tanks and cages.

In Memory of Melba Walker... An Interview With Melba Walker, January 8, 2011
In memory of Melba Walker July 2, 1916 to January 1, 2015. I was fortunate to meet the Walker family on January 8, 2011 while visiting Placerita Canyon. I only had my cell phone with me that day, but was able to capture a bit of history as I interviewed Melba Walker and her family. Locals are familiar with the Walker cabin, which is located about a mile east of the entrance to Placerita Canyon State Park, in Santa Clarita, California. Sadly, Melba Walker will be laid to rest at Eternal Valley on Thursday, January 8th, 2015, exactly four years to the day after this video was made. Melba Walker will be sadly missed by her family, friends, and the community.
