Pueblo Voices: Water
Pueblo Indians' historical perspectives are shaped by their deep cultural heritage, kept alive through oral tradition. National Forest Closed - Rio Grande del Norte NM Loop Hike
The Carson National Forest was closed near Taos, NM. We drove to Taos on the first leg of our 4 state highpoint trip. So with Wheeler Mountain out of the question we began looking around Taos for other hiking opportunities. We discovered the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. We had never heard of it and obviously didn't know anything about it. What we found was a really cool canyon hike.
Afterward we had a nice lunch near the river and a drive to the bridge over the river.
Sacramento Mts. - Lower Dog Canyon Hike - January 31, 2018
While camping at the Oliver Lee State park in New Mexico, just south of Alamogordo off Hwy 54, we hiked the Lower Dog Canyon Trail - a 6-mile ot-and-back trail to the ruins of a line cabin. It was a rather strenuous hike but the views and beauty of the canyon justified the trek. It's a great hike for the cool weather; not to be attempted during hot weather.
Wheeler Peak, New Mexico 13,161'
Wheeler Peak is the highest point in New Mexico. :) My photos and write-up about this hike:
Wheeler Peak, New Mexico
At an elevation of at 4,011 metres (13,161 feet), Wheeler Peak is the highest point in the state of New Mexico. It is located northeast of Taos, in the northern part of the state, about 240 kilometres (150 miles) northeast of Albuquerque.
In this video you can see me opening the summit register. Also, there's a brownish haze off to the horizon in about every direction - this was due, at the time, from a massive fire that was taking place in northeastern Arizona a few hundred kilometres away. Called the Wallow fire, it had burned over 162,000 hectares (400,000 acres) at the time of this recording.
