Willow Court, New Norfolk Tasmania- Insane Asylum
Willow Court takes its name from two willows planted by Lady Franklin, the wife of the Lieutenant-Governor, which were reputed to be two cuttings from the grave of Napoleon on Saint Helena. Willow Court pre dates the well known site of Port Arthur. The complex and the adjoining Royal Derwent Hospital, was the oldest mental hospital in Australia still in use, at the time of its closure in 2000-01. In early years the hospital served three purposes; as a general hospital for the district, an invalid depot for convicts and an asylum for the insane (to serve the whole colony). It remained under military administration until the official Government take-over in 1855. Eventually the hospital became virtually self-sufficient when farms on adjacent land were used to grow fruit and vegetables and produce sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry. At the end of the 20th century, changes in Government policy led to activities at the complex being wound down and eventually closed.

Willow Court, Royal Derwent Hospital, New Norfolk Tasmania- Ward 7 (Part 1) Mental Asylum
Ward 7 was built in 1965 and used to house refectory patients. Ward 7 was basically a secure ward for mentally ill patients who pose a risk to harming themselves or others. A lot of the patients were classified as psychotic.
Stats indicate that 25% of the clients resided in Ward 7 for many years whilst up to 50% were only admitted for a few weeks.
Currently Ward 7 is on the Heritage list meaning its safe from demolition, however the developer if trying to appeal this.

A Historic Event for Willow Court
On Sunday 6th May, at 2.15 pm the Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, Brian Wightman MP, vistied the Willow Court site along with Mayor Martyn Evans, David Llewellyn and Councillors to officially hand over the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Derwent Valley Council and State Government.
The MoU occurred during the Tasmanian Heritage week Willow Court open day & Frescati Open Day

Willow Court, New Norfolk Tasmania - Oldest Grape Vine in Australia / Southern Hemisphere
Willow Court is arguably home to Australia's and possibly the Southern Hemisphere's oldest grape vine, growing in the grounds of Frascati Gardens.
The vine was almost lost due to an arson attack on two old sheds in June 2010 that the vine used to grow on.

Location- New Norfolk, Tasmania Australia
As Willow Court grew and expanded over many years so did ideas of better practice and facilities to treat people with Disabilities and Mental Health issues in Tasmania.
Construction started for the new Hospital during the 1950s and was completed several years later. Royal Derwent Hospital consisted of 12 free standing Wards spaced out over a large area. The Royal Derwent Site also consisted of other buildings and amenities such as a pool, theatre, gym, bowling green, Laundry, Kitchen, Steam Boiler plant and a Storeroom just to name a few.
Royal Derwent Hospital cared for a range of people with Mental Health Issues such as depression, schizophrenia, Psychosis, Alcoholics, Drug Addicts, War Veterans, Criminally Insane, Epileptics, Sex offenders, Paedophiles.
Patients that posed a risk to themselves or the community were placed in one of the High Security Wards, Ward 7 & Ward 10; both these Wards had HaHa walls constructed around the parameter.
During the late 90s the new philosophy of De-institutionalisation meant that patients started gradually moving from the wards at Royal Derwent into group homes in the community. Royal Derwent Officially closed its doors in 2000.
Since its closure Royal Derwent has been left to deteriorate and decay with time and vandalism. Recently a developer purchased most of the Wards and plans to knock them down to create a Housing development: the demolition has already started.
In its operation and during its closure Royal Derwent has had a lot of reported paranormal activity, some of which has even been reported about in the States largest Newspaper and News. Australian Paranormal Investigation Unit has dedicated many hours investigating these reports and have since experienced there own paranormal encounters.

Ward 9 was built in 1959 and housed chronic patients with various issues such as alcoholics, paedophiles, drug addicts and schizophrenics.
Royal Derwent is a Haunted Abandoned Asylum in Tasmania Australia.
Royal Derwent is destined to be demolished so this may be some of the last footage seen before it meets its fate.

Tunnel still a mystery

THE mystery has not yet been solved, but a large piece of the puzzle behind the New Norfolk tunnels has been revealed.
The Derwent Valley Council has obtained video footage of about 100m of the tunnel, which lies up to 8m beneath one of New Norfolk's busiest streets.
The tunnel was believed to have been built in the 1830s, but no one knows why.

Little is known about these old stairs in Willow Court, many locals don't even know there whereabouts or existence.
I would assume these stairs were built in the 1930's when the Oval and Oval Wards were built.
