Since the founding of the city, the downtown area was prone to flooding, hindering travel, damaging and destroying businesses and the buildings they were housed in. As part of the flood remediation program, the city elected to construct Founders Park. The park is designed to retain rising waters from heavy rains. An engineering feat, the park floor was raised above the creek bed, and retention walls were constructed to allow the rising water a place to go. The park is home to several sculptures placed there by a local art committee, and hosts live music, food truck junctions, and the popular Blue Plum Festival. The park also borders the newly constructed Farmers Market, Wild Wing Cafe, and Yee-Haw Brewing company.

90th Johnson County Old-Time Fiddlers Convention------
21-22 August 2015, Old Mill Music Park, Laurel Bloomery , TN
Most folks now call this the Laurel Bloomery Fiddlers Convention since it has been held for the last twenty-four years at the Old Mill Music Park in Laurel Bloomery (Johnson County), Tennessee. The first fiddlers convention was held in the Johnson County High School auditorium in Mountain City in 1925 and there has been one held somewhere in the county every year since.
This convention is far smaller than the one in nearby Galax, Virginia, during early August but the Laurel Bloomery convention one is far older- possibly the oldest in the southern Appalachian region. The genre in competition is strictly old time although you will probably hear more bluegrass in the campground pickin' sessions (Galax has both bluegrass and old time competition). The convention is hosted by Jackie Warden at her Old Mill Music Park and is produced and staffed by her many friends in the old-time music community from Watauga and Ashe County in North Carolina, Washington County in Virginia, Johnson County in Tennessee, and further afield in the surrounding southern Appalachians.

Top 10 HORRIFYING Mental ASYLUMS in the United States
Despite their original benevolent intent, mental asylums have become synonymous with abuse and malpractice. For one, the practice of lobotomy originates in the world of psychotherapy and institutionalization. Egas Moniz performed the first lobotomy in Portugal in 1935 and it was soon after adapted by American physicians Walter Freeman and James W. Watts, who popularized the operation. From 1949 to 1951, the amount of lobotomies grew from 5,074 to 18,608 people. John F. Kennedy’s sister is one of the many who were victims of the controversial procedure.
