Bristol - Wills Memorial Building
A short video of the trip I made to the top of Will's memorial Building in Bristol with my friend. I was dark so the footage is fairly noisy. Some photos taken from the top is also included in the end. It was very cold and windy at the top by the way !

What's inside the Wills Memorial Building?
WILLS MEMORIAL BUILDING AND TOWER TOUR
ℹ It's an iconic building to Bristolians, but one, I imagine, many have not visited. It stands at the top of Park Street (it’s actually on Queens Road, but most think it’s at the top of Park Street) and as you drive or walk up Park Street, you can’t help but at wonder at the splendour of the building; especially the tower.
I first went inside the Building to view the Gaia artwork (link to that video below) and whilst I was there, I picked up a leaflet advising they did tours and a few Saturday’s later I was going around the Wills Building.
On the tour you will get to see:
✔The Entrance
✔The Great Hall
✔The George Bell
✔The Top of the Tower
✔A high view of the Great Hall
✔Several libraries
✔The Council Chamber
In the video I mention that the bell is the 9th biggest bell in Britain.
I got this information from here:
It is the 9th biggest bell in British HISTORY but is the 7th biggest out of all those still in use.
I also say in the video that the bell rings in E flat, but the aforementioned website says it is D sharp!
E flat is mentioned in several other website including this one:
They say the bell is the 6th biggest in Britain, so…..
The tour lasts around 90 minutes and the guide is very informative and personable.
For me, the highlight was the bell and the view. The libraries and Council Chamber didn’t do anything for me – but were still a nice little insight into the workings of the building.
The tour costs around £4 per person and is only open to those aged 8 and above. It not recommended for those with mobility issues as there are a lot of steps to climb and there is no lift to the bell tower or to the top of the tower itself.
More information on the history can be found on varies websites but a good place to start is on Wikipedia (the link is down below).

Wills Memorial Building re-opens, 1963
On 6 December, the Wills Memorial Building, which had been extensively damaged during an air raid in 1940, reopened after major restoration work costing £140,000. Two of the craftsmen who worked on the restoration, A. Williams and E. Myatt, also worked as carpenters on the original construction of the Hall. An ode for chorus, orchestra and organ was commissioned and performed during the re-opening ceremony. The work, entitled 'Break to be Built, O Stone', was written by Ursula Vaughan Williams, second wife of Ralph Vaughan Williams, with music by Anthony Milner.
Aerial view of Park Street, Bristol, UK from the top of the Wills Memorial Building. PUBLIC DOMAIN
The Wills Memorial Building (also known as the Wills Memorial Tower or simply the Wills Tower) is a Neo Gothic building designed by Sir George Oatley and built as a memorial to Henry Overton Wills III.It is considered one of the last great Gothic buildings to be built in England. A snippet of this video was used in a project, but I thought I'd share the rest as public domain. Because I only had one chance at the video, I took up THREE cameras to make sure I got the shot, so it's filmed on Panasonic GH2, JVC HM150 and Kodak ZX6, though it's not a fair comparison if you're looking to compare cameras. The film-maker wanted this shot at 24fps, and you'll probably notice the inevitable jerky movement dues to the slow frame rate. I used an oil-damed tripod and the top half of a boom mic stand to try to get the smoothest slowest panning I could. You're welcome to use this video non-exclusively, without payment or permission required.

Celebrating women at the University of Bristol
To mark the centenary of the first British women winning the right to vote, we are honouring Bristol women who have changed our institution, and the world.
These are just a few of the many remarkable women who have made, and continue to make, Bristol truly great. This project will be the first of many initiatives to honour our women in the Wills Memorial Building.

ℹ This is extra footage I shot of the view from the Wills Memorial Tower. The footage is a bit rough in places, but that’s why it’s on our second channel.
I have to confess, not my finest work! Which is why in the main video I use mostly still pictures. We had limited time on the roof, and I wasn’t getting the shots I wanted. There is a lot of panning and going back and…. Ugh…. I made the best out of a bad lot. And then, to cap it all, the sound fails on the recordings for some odd reason and that is the reason I added the music. Gives you a chance to hear it without me blabbing all over it.
Would like to go back and do a better video from the top in the future.

✌???? ABOUT S&J TV2
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello and welcome to S&J TV2, the home of longer,
unedited cuts of the videos you will find on the
main channel, S&J TV1.
These videos contain a mixture of:
• Bloopers
• Unedited footage
• Alternative pieces to camera
• Footage that didn’t make the final video
❓ WHY THE NEED FOR A SECOND CHANNEL?
Well that’s a good question. We film a lot of footage when making a video. Some of it is good enough to go into our main video, some of it is good, but for pacing reasons, didn’t make it in and some of it is just terrible; shaky, out of focus, not well composed and pieces to camera where we don’t know what we are talking about! So, we thought you might find it interesting to see what we’ve filmed and how that went to make the final video on S&J TV1. If you don’t find it interesting, that’s fine too ????

A quick walk around the University of Bristol, half of Bristol buildings are of the Univ; its a lovely city and very student friendly and not as expensive as London is
Fire breaks out near Wills Memorial Building Bristol
Ahuge fire broke out at Bristol University's new maths building this evening, which was undergoing a multimillion pound investment. The blaze caught hold of the top floor of the Fry Building, a Grade II-listed facility that was in the process of being upgraded as part of a £33million renovation. No one was believed to be inside when the flames started just after 5pm and there have been no reports of any injuries.Seven fire engines and 40 firefighters battled with the flames for three hours, eventually managing to put them out around 8pm.The cause of the fire is unknown but an investigation is due to take place.Surrounding roads and the nearby Wills Memorial Building, designed by esteemed British architect Sir George Oatley, were evacuated. The university said it will be closed tomorrow, but will be 'business as usual' on Monday.Head of facilities at the university Paul Smith told ITV West Country there were no students or staff in the building when the fire started, as it's been under construction for several months.A spokesman told MailOnline it was 'too early to tell' the extent of the damage. They said the cause of the fire is still unknown, but an investigation will take place in due course. They said: 'A fire broke out in our Fry Building at just after 5pm this evening (Saturday, January 6).'The building is currently undergoing refurbishment and was due to reopen in summer 2018.'Everyone has been accounted for and Avon Fire & Rescue have informed us that they have now extinguished the fire.'We will be working with Avon Fire & Rescue in the coming days to help investigate the cause of the blaze.' The university Twitter account posted earlier: 'We're aware of an ongoing fire in our Fry Building, which is currently being refurbished.'Everyone's accounted for.More updates when we have them.' Avon Fire and Rescue Service sent fire engines and firefighters from across Bristol and Bath, along with two turntable ladders and pumping machines, to the scene on the university campus, located between Woodland Road and University Road. They thanked everyone for their efforts bringing the flames under control.Helicopters were also used by the emergency services to guide jets of water being shot at the inferno.Meanwhile, hundreds of students, residents and visitors lined the streets to watch.A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said earlier: 'There are no reports of any injuries in stage. There are no hazardous materials involved.'The building is a university building which is under refurbishment.'There was no persons in the building at the time of the fire.Crews are working to extinguish the fire.'The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage however we will be investigating.' They wrote earlier on Twitter: 'Thoughts with crews dealing with incident in Bristol right now.'Hopefully not as bad as it seems.Plz give crews room to work & be patient if delayed'.Sacha Dhabalia was in the library, which is near the Fry Building, when she heard fire alarms sound.
The King and Queen visit the University, 1925
On 9 June 1925, the Wills Memorial Building was opened by King George V and Queen Mary. The final cost of the building work was £501,566 19s 10d (approximately £21 million in today's terms).

Great George Bell, Bristol (in the Wills Memorial Tower) (EXTENDED VIDEO)
THE GREAT GEORGE BELL IN THE WILLS MEMORIAL TOWER, BRISTOL, ENGLAND – EXTENDED VERSION
???? SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHANNELS. Yes, that means you! Do it…….
ℹ This is extra footage I shot of the Great George Bell. The footage is a bit rough in places, but that’s why it’s on our second channel.
The Great George Bell is one of the main reasons I went on the tour and I was not disappointed in any way. It’s a magnificent beast of a bell.
Is it the 9th, 7th or 6th largest bell in Britain? Well that depends on where you look. It’s the 9th biggest in British history and the 7th of those that survive. Some web sites say the 6th, but I think they are wrong. Opinions welcome.
Is it E flat or D sharp? Again, that depends on where you look, and opinion is also welcome on that too.
I would like to go back again, with more camera to do a better video on the bell. Anyway, enjoy what I filmed.
