Southbridge Solar Farm in Wilmington, DE
The Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA), joined by Mayor Mike Purzycki, Governor John Carney and other local and state officials, today officially dedicated its new Southbridge Solar Park at 900 South Claymont Street. The 1.15 megawatt solar installation will save the housing authority money and provide clean, renewable solar-generated electricity to WHA residents. The solar array – developed, financed and constructed by New York-based Ecogy Energy— is currently the largest, privately-financed, public housing solar project in the United States.
Located at the site of the former 180-unit WHA Southbridge Extension, the solar farm is estimated to produce 40 million kilowatt hours of electricity over the lifetime of the project. The clean energy produced by this solar project is equivalent to the polluting CO2 emissions from more than 69,000 barrels of oil or nearly 33,000,000 pounds of coal burned. In addition to managing the construction of the solar park, Ecogy Energy will monitor and maintain the facility.

The Botanical Garden at the Wilmington Riverfront
It is one of the most soothing, yet little known places in Wilmington: The Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge. This urban oasis is named for the environmentalist and former governor of Delaware who died early this year. This little viddie introduces you to this innovative wetland restoration project by looking at the botanical garden in the refuge. Take one step off the sidewalk and you'll be able to walk among flowers and plants like gray dogwood, cattails, and marsh grasses. There most certainly are several types of insects including dragonflies, bumblebees and crickets, but none are hostile. The gentle babble of the man-made waterfall is an enticing call to stay awhile, although the operating steel mill across the Christina River sometimes screeches like a car wreck long enough to ruin the mood. Regrettably, the garden is such a short stretch it is impossible to feel lost in the wild. But it's a good excuse to return again and again.

Wilmington is a port city in North Carolina. It’s known as a gateway to Cape Fear Coast beaches like Wrightsville, with its strong surf, and Carolina, with its long boardwalk. Part of downtown’s Historic District, the Riverwalk is lined with restaurants, galleries and shops. It runs along the Cape Fear River, where the Battleship North Carolina is moored. Artifacts on the ship explore WWII naval combat history.
Wilmington was settled by the English along the Cape Fear River. The city was named after Spencer Compton who was the Earl of Wilmington. Its historic downtown has a 1.75-mile (2.82 km) Riverwalk, developed as a tourist attraction in the late 20th century. In 2014 Wilmington's riverfront was ranked as the Best American Riverfront by readers of USA Today. It is minutes away from nearby beaches. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Wilmington as one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. City residents live between the river and the ocean, with four nearby beach communities: Fort Fisher, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, all within half-hour drives from downtown Wilmington.
Wilmington is the home of EUE Screen Gems Studios, the largest domestic television and movie production facility outside California. Dream Stage 10, the facility's newest sound stage, is the third-largest in the US. It houses the largest special-effects water tank in North America.
