Wilmington & Western Railroad: Hockessin Merchant Express-April 7, 2019
On a bright and beautiful Sunday, we chased the Hockessin Merchant Express on the Wilmington & Western Railroad. The train was led by the Wilmington & Western's own no. 58, a Baldwin 0-6-0 built in 1907.
58 was originally built for the Atlanta, Birmingham, & Atlantic Railroad and was later renumbered to 27. 58 also operated for the U.S. Army Railroad as 6961, Virginia Blue Ridge Railway as 4, and the Valley Forge Scenic Railroad as 300.
58 was eventually donated to the Wilmington & Western Railroad in 1997 by Brian R. Woodcock, and was returned to service fall of 1998 and dedicated as the Veterans Locomotive in 1999.
58 is equipped with a Lehigh Valley Railroad 3 Chime whistle in honor of Thomas C. Marshall, Jr., the founder of the Wilmington & Western Railroad as well as the Marshall Steam Museum in Yorklyn, Delaware who passed away in February 2019.

PRR Doodlebug no. 4662 The Paul Revere on the Wilmington & Western Railroad-July 4, 2018
Unfortunately today, one of our railfans, Harry Warren (thehnw1223), was not able to stay and catch the Fireworks Express at 7pm. However, we plan to visit the Wilmington and Western Railroad again on Saturday September, 29, 2018 to catch the Hockessin Flyer which will most likely to be pulled by no. 58.

Wilmington and Western Railroad - Lerro Productions Photo Charter
Visit on Facebook, at for more!
On January 29, 2011, Big Jim Video Productions was honored to be present at his first Lerro Productions photo charter - held at the Wilmington & Western Railroad, on the outskirts of Wilmington, DE. A relatively heavy snowfall a few days before, on top of an earlier blizzard, provided a winter wonderland (so to speak) for 4-4-0 #98 and her two-car passenger consist. The American-type engine looked and sounded awesome crossing through the snow-covered woods of Delaware. Thanks to Pete Lerro and the entire Lerro Productions crew, as well as the fine folks of the W&W for all of their hard work to pull this charter off! It was well worth it! Enjoy this video!
Wilmington & Western Railroad Shop Newsreel

If you have an interest in trains/railroading or historic preservation, the W&W is eagerly welcoming new volunteers!

This day both of their operational steam locomotives pulled the train into the Red Clay Valley. This is also one of the final trips that #58 would be doing as she will be going down for a 15 year rebuild. So sit back and enjoy the sounds of the Red Clay Valley and the view of a doubleheader in the First State.

On the snowy morning of Saturday, December 9th, 2017 me and my buddies: Ian, John, Scott, and Nick made our way down to the only Railroad in the First State of Delaware to see the only Tourist Railroad with operating Steam Locomotives in the State. That would be if you guess correctly the Wilmington & Western Railroad. The Wilmington & Western is a very cool Railroad based in the Red Clay Valley. With the beginning of the Railroad starting at CSX's Wilsmere Yard it ends all the way in Hockessin. With the Railroad usually not going the full length of the line for the Santa Trips the Railroad went to Ashland where the Railroad would finally head back to Greenbank for the next trip. The power for the trips would be W&W #58 which is an 0-6-0 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone, PA. This small but mighty Steam Locomotive would and still is providing power for the Santa Trains after being Out of Service for quite a while. But it was nice to see the Locomotive back in operation on the Railroad! So sit back, relax & enjoy as we chase a Steam Locomotive through the Heavy Snowfall!
As always we thank you for watching!

Riding the Doodlebug on the Wilmington and Western: Part One
So on a hot July day, I decided to go to a rail line that I have never been to. The Wilmington and Western. Operating the excursion from Greenback station to Mt. Cuba was ex-PRR doodlebug #4662, the only operational Doodlebug in the eastern United States and only one of 2 PRR doodlebugs still preserved (the other being #4666 at the Black River and Western) Equipped to this railcar are 2 Leslie horns. The horn you will be hearing in this video is the A200, the horn made famous as the sound of the PRR's GG1 locomotives. Sit back and enjoy the sound of the deep toned horn as we wander through the Red Clay Valley

Wilmington & Western - Festival Express 2014 (in HD)
Every year, the Wilmington & Western Railroad, based a few miles out of its' namesake city in Delaware, hosts an art festival, used as a fundraising event for the railroad, in Hockessin, DE. The railroad, in conjunction with the event, runs their former Pennsylvania Railroad Doodlebug, #4662 The Paul Revere on short trips out of Hockessin. Starting at Memorial Hall, the train runs to town of Ashland and return - an approximately 40-minute round trip. This event is held one weekend every year, and BJVP went out for this year's Saturday trips.
Enjoy the views of the Paul Revere meandering through the Delaware countryside, across trestles, past waterfalls, and through rock cuts on the 2014 edition of the Festival Express!

Wilmington & Western's Autumn Leaf Special
This video, shot during November 2012, shows Baldwin 0-6-0 #58 and EMD SW-900 #915 working on the Autumn Leaf Special train to Hockessin, Delaware. Hurricane Sandy had passed through the area the week before and the line was none the worse for wear.
So, enjoy the sights and sounds of railroading in Delaware's Red Clay Valley as the trees turn ablaze with magnificent fall colors! Also, be sure to watch in 720p HD for the best quality!
Cinders and Sweat: A Muggy Day on the Wilmington & Western
For the Fourth of July weekend in 2019, the Wilmington & Western Railroad trotted out their 0-6-0 steam locomotive, #58, for a series of Mt. Cuba Meteor trips as well as a fireworks train on the evening of the Fourth itself. On this particular day, the Baldwin-built locomotive pulled a pair of Mt. Cuba Meteor trips along the Red Clay Creek.
Adding on top of the existing heat provided by both the locomotive and the July air, a passing shower provided an extremely high amount of humidity in the air - making just about every movement turn into a hot and sweaty mess.
Nonetheless, a great time was had both onboard and trackside - enjoy this look at A Muggy Day on the Wilmington & Western!
