Leaf Tourism Has Towns Seeing Green
BALDWIN, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- As Iowas river valleys
begin to turn a fiery orange against a deep fall blue sky, it is the sweetest
time of year for Paul Tabor. The founder of the oldest vineyard in the
state is out with his crew collecting the last grapes of the season.
The
big bunches are a deep purple and pile up quickly in yellow bins as the juicy
fruit is snipped from the vines. Tabor says the traffic is picking up on
Iowas back country roads and its a sign that leaf lovers are beginning their
annual outings to view the colorful change. He says for some its
becoming a tradition, Were finding a lot more that people are planning Iowa
wineries as a full destination, you know, coming out here to do the wine trail
and spend a whole week in eastern Iowa just visiting the wineries.
Falling leaves can pile up into profits in October. McGregor and
Sabula on the Mississippi River and Waverly and the Amana Colonies in the
corridor are just a few towns who see leaves turn to gold with fall tourism.
In
Bellevue, where Big Mill Creek flows into the Mississippi in Jackson County,
youll find one of the most scenic settings in Iowa. Potters Mill, built
in 1843, is a bright red jewel that glistens amid the changing oaks and maples
along the river bluffs. New owner Mark Harmon tells a visitor its not
hard to see why it catches everyones eye, Just look at it .. its beautiful.
Harmon says the southern food and barbeque restaurant with its rustic
beams and natural stone walls is one of the most photographed buildings in the
entire state. He says fall fans who appreciate the vibrant colors that
now frame the river banks are already flocking to town, Bellevue is beautiful
year round, but I think the fall is just another opportunity to highlight the
natural beauty they have here.
Just down the street Christine Baker is
marveling at the rooftop view from her Mont Rest Inn. The scene up and down the
river is now dotted with an explosion of reds and yellows. Mont Rest is known
for its Murder Mystery nights and HMS Titanic themed dinners. But Baker
says this is the time of year when so many guests take a break from their
travels on The Great River Road and spend the night so they can continue their
leaf chase in the morning, Fall is when people like to get up and go and get
onto their next adventure .. We see people from all over the world.
Europeans love the Mississippi River and they love to travel the Mississippi
and its just heaven, it really is.
We all know that fall and its beautiful
colors are fleeting and we all know what comes next. It may explain why so many
people load up the car and hit the road for one last hurrah before the colors
flutter to the ground. Matt Hammill mrhammill@sbgtv.com

US polar vortex: killer cold snap to give way to historic warm-up after brutal weather leaves 21 dead and millions stranded
A killer polar vortex gripping parts of the US is set to ease up and give way to a dramatic, never-before-seen warm-up.
Brutal winds sent the mercury plummeting to -34C in the Midwest, which has been struck by a historic deep freeze, but temperatures are expected to soar by up to 80 degrees within days.
Meteorologists said past record-cold waves have never dissipated so quickly as they predicted that the region would be seeing “spring-like” temperatures by the week’s end.
Temperatures in Chicago have been at near-record lows. Amid the freezing conditions, the city reportedly experienced “frost quakes” with residents reporting loud booms.
At least 21 people have been killed and millions were left stranded since the deep freeze took hold at the weekend.
But Jeff Masters, Weather Underground meteorology director, said Michigan and Illinois were headed dramatically warmer temperatures by Monday.
He said the swing in temperature would be “unprecedented”, adding that the polar vortex may return in late February but such intense cold will not be felt.
The fatalities from the recent spell of freezing weather include a 75-year-old man hit by a snow plow in the Chicago area as well as a University of Iowa student who was found dead on campus.
Television station KCRG reported the body of 18-year-old Gerald Belz was found behind an academic hall just before 3am on Wednesday.

Free-range chickens at Caledonia Farm
David Petrovick talks about his free-range chickens at Caledonia Farm in Barre.
Local egg producers say the recent salmonella scare is a byproduct of the country's industrialized food production system.
Julie Rawson of the Many Hands Organic Farm on Sheldon Road, Barre, said the farm produces about three dozen eggs a day and has for more than 25 years.
“We sell what we don't need for ourselves, and we also raise free-range chickens for meat,” she said.
Ms. Rawson said the recall of a half-billion eggs for suspected salmonella enteritidis contamination points to the hazards of raising chickens in factory-like conditions.
“This is a perfect example of the country's industrialized food system gone awry. The problem is that for local farmers, say, who raise free-range chickens and feed them organic grain as we do, the production costs are just too high,” she said.
“People ultimately get what they pay for, and if they want to buy cheap food high in refined sugar, flour, salt and high-fructose corn syrup, there's a good chance they'll pay an even higher price later in health care costs,” Ms. Rawson said.
Meanwhile, The Country Hen, 16 Williamsville Road, Hubbardston, is complying with new Food and Drug Administration rules in the wake of the salmonella recall in Iowa, but general manager Bob Beauregard is quick to point out the farm has never tested positive for salmonella enteritidis.
A major Massachusetts egg producer, The Country Hen did $6 million in business last year and distributed upward of 25 million eggs to supermarkets and groceries in New England and along the East Coast, according to Mr. Beauregard.

Hamilton County, Ks Ranch For Sale!
2,597+/- Acres Just Listed - Turn Key Western Kansas Ranch
ELK, TROPHY MULE DEER, TROPHY WHITETAIL, SCALED QUAIL, CATTLE FACILITIES, 5 IRRIGATED PIVOTS, MULTIPLE SANDPITS, AND 4+/- MILES OF THE ARKANSAS RIVER!
Located between Syracuse and Coolidge on the Arkansas River in Hamilton County, Ks. This farm has everything to offer for the avid outdoorsmen, rancher, and farmer.
The word ELK is something you don't see or even hear of very often in the state of Kansas. This farm has had its very own elk herd for 5+ years, and believe it or not, you can actually hunt elk in Kansas. (For more details on elk season in Kansas go to ksoutdoors.com or call the KDWP headquarters) The elk love the habitat this ranch has. There is a large amount of cover including thick salt cedar's, cotton wood trees, sage brush, and cover / food in the irrigated cropland next to the Ark River. The current farmers believe there are anywhere from 75-100 elk roaming the property up and down the river.
All of this cover, food, and water hosts more than just elk. The size of the mule deer and whitetail bucks are world class! The whitetail flourish on this farm with all the thick cover, food, and water. With the Arkansas River winding miles through the property it creates hundreds of travel corridors and pinch points for the whitetail deer. The mule deer have plenty of cover in the 930+/- acres of sand hills just south of river road. The rolling terrain, thick sage brush, and tall sand hills butted up next to irrigated crop land is perfect habitat for large herds of mule deer.
If the Elk, Whitetail, and Mule Deer aren't enough hunting for you this farm also offers top notch Waterfowl Hunting, Thousands of Turkeys, and holds multiple coveys of Scaled / Blue Quail. There is over 36+/- acres of sand pits and ponds that stretch along the property. The larger sandpits hold high numbers of ducks and geese year-round, and have been known for great fishing as well. The large groves of cotton wood trees next to the irrigated crop pivots make for prime roosting areas for the Rio Grande Turkeys.
INCOME:
On the income side of things, the ranch has 5 irrigated pivots scattered throughout the property, and also has its own cattle facilities. The irrigated crop land is great not only for income, but provides excellent cover / food for the large amounts of wildlife. The cattle facility has 11 pens with water, an arena, hydrants, water wells, sorting alleys, an office head quarter building, and other lean-to shops. This facility can hold up to 800 head of cattle. The ranch has excellent fences and gates throughout the farm.
WHY THIS PROPERTY IS UNIQUE:
Besides your own elk herd this area of the state has large acre land owners. With large amounts of acres there are only so many hunters per square mile. With little hunting pressure, cover, food, and water you can see why this creates one of the rarest opportunities in the world for a buyer. There is literally no other property on the market in the sate of Kansas that has what this place offers.

SUMMARY
=======
The Chattanooga Campaign was a series of maneuvers and battles in October and November 1863, during the American Civil War. Following the defeat of Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans' Union Army of the Cumberland at the Battle of Chickamauga in September, the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg besieged Rosecrans and his men by occupying key high terrain around Chattanooga, Tennessee. Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant was given command of Union forces in the West, now consolidated under the Division of the Mississippi. Significant reinforcements also began to arrive with him in Chattanooga from Mississippi and the Eastern Theater. On October 19, Grant removed Rosecrans from command of the Army of the Cumberland and replaced him with Major General George Henry Thomas.
After opening a supply line (the Cracker Line) to feed his starving men and animals, Grant's army fought off a Confederate counterattack at the Battle of Wauhatchie on October 28–29, 1863. On November 23, the Army of the Cumberland advanced from the fortifications around Chattanooga to seize the minor high ground at Orchard Knob while elements of the Union Army of the Tennessee under Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman maneuvered to launch a surprise attack against Bragg's right flank on Missionary Ridge. On November 24, Sherman's men crossed the Tennessee River in the morning and then advanced to occupy high ground at the northern end of Missionary Ridge in the afternoon. The same day, Eastern Theater troops under Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker defeated the Confederates in the Battle of Lookout Mountain. The next day they began a movement toward Bragg's left flank at Rossville.
On November 25, Sherman's attack on Bragg's right flank made little progress. Hoping to distract Bragg's attention, Grant ordered Thomas's army to advance in the center of his line to the base of Missionary Ridge. A combination of misunderstood orders and the pressure of the tactical situation caused Thomas's men to surge to the top of Missionary Ridge, routing the Army of Tennessee, which retreated to Dalton, Georgia, fighting off the Union pursuit successfully at the Battle of Ringgold Gap. Bragg's defeat eliminated the last significant Confederate control of Tennessee and opened the door to an invasion of the Deep South, leading to Sherman's Atlanta Campaign of 1864.
