Wilton, Connecticut
Wilton is a town nestled in the Norwalk River Valley in southwestern Connecticut in the United States. It is located in Fairfield County. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 18,062.
Wilton was officially recognized as a parish in 1726. The original 40 families of the parish began their own Congregational church and were allowed by Norwalk to hire a minister, open schools and build roads. During the Revolutionary War, in 1777 the British used Wilton as an escape route after their successful raid on Danbury. Several homes were burned, but the town remained intact. In 1802, Wilton was granted a Town Charter by the Connecticut General Assembly and became a political entity independent from Norwalk. With a strong anti-slavery sentiment by its residents, Wilton served as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Connecticut - USA

Connecticut is the southernmost state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. As of the 2010 Census, Connecticut features the highest per-capita income, Human Development Index (0.962), and median household income in the United States.[ Connecticut is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south. Its capital city is Hartford, and its most populous city is Bridgeport. Although Connecticut is technically part of New England, it is often grouped along with New York and New Jersey as the Tri-state area. The state is named for the Connecticut River, a major U.S. river that approximately bisects the state. The word Connecticut is derived from various anglicized spellings of an Algonquian word for long tidal river.

Historical Society Explores the Revolution
Watch more and discuss:
For the eleventh straight year, the Norwalk Historical Society took a trip back in time.
Members of the Norwalk community celebrated Independence Day Thursday with a walking tour through historic central Norwalk -- and right through the Revolutionary period.
This was the area where the seat of government was during the American Revolution, said Edward Eckert, a member on the historical society's board of directors.Eckert and his wife, Madeleine, led a tour down East Avenue, through Mill Hill Park and around the Norwalk green.
The site where the Norwalk Inn is now used to be called Grumman Hill, Eckert said. That's where we believe the heaviest part of the Battle [of Norwalk in 1779] took place.
Eckert says most of the area around the green served as the battlefield during the Battle of Norwalk.
While fighting was going on down East Avenue, another detachment was coming up West Avenue on the other side of the river, he said. When they reached the main body, they had to come up right here, up East Wall Street.
The day wound down with ceremonies and with Town Clerk Rick McQuaid reading the Declaration of Independence. Eckert says taking time to reflect is a lot like throwing a birthday party.
It's important that we know this is the birthdate of the United States.

Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art Lafayette, IN
04-18-2015
Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art Lafayette, IN Produced by Erick F Dircks
The Mansion was originally the State of Connecticut building at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Connecticut chose architect Edward T. Hapgood to design the building. The state wanted their pavilion to represent a country gentleman's home, and the architect patterned the building after the 1820 Sigourney Mansion in Hartford. Many components were taken from the 1760 Hubbard-Slater Mansion in Norwich including the front entryway, various interior columns, and door capitals. The mansion has three above ground floors and a full basement totaling 15,000 square feet. It also includes seven fireplaces and 4 1/2 baths.
The mansion was designed and built to be moved after the World's Fair. It was dismantled and moved to Lafayette, Indiana, immediately after the Fair by Mr. and Mrs.William Potter and became their personal residence. There are only 15 known buildings surviving from the Fair, and the Haan Mansion is most true to its original design and purpose of the 13 buildings removed from the grounds.
Tours Available
Since the Mansion is still the private residence of Bob and Ellie Haan, it is not open continually. However, tours are scheduled at certain times and can be found on the tours page. Group tours can also be arranged. Visit
