Winchester is a city in the county of Hampshire, on the edge of England's South Downs National Park. It’s known for medieval Winchester Cathedral, with its 17th-century Morley Library, the Winchester Bible and a Norman crypt. Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill, a working 18th-century corn mill. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur.

Winchester is located near the M3 motorway and at the meeting of the A34, A31, A3090 and A272 roads. Once a major traffic bottleneck, the city still suffers from congestion at peak times. A Roman road originating in Salisbury called The Clarendon Way ends in Winchester. Winchester railway station is served by South West Trains trains from London Waterloo, Weymouth, Portsmouth and Southampton, as well as by CrossCountry between Bournemouth, and either Manchester or Newcastle via Birmingham.

I decided to make a trip to Winchester on the 24th July 2018. I had never been before. Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. It is situated about 61 miles south west of London and around 13 from Southampton which is its closest city. Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum. The city is, home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still using its original buildings. There is so much to see here in this fine city and spending a day here you would find it difficult to cover all the famous sites.
To name a few the Cathedral, Wolvesey Castle or Old Bishop's Palace the River Itchen walk, the old site of Winchester Castle the Great Hall being all that remains now, The Guild Hall, Winchester City Museum, The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum and Memorial Gardens, Westgate Museum, The Royal Green Jackets Museum, Winchester's Military Museums, King Alfred the Great - Statue which stands in The Broadway, Winnall Moors Nature Reserve which can be found at Durngate Place, Winchester, Abbey Gardens, 21 Colebrook St, Winchester, After spending about 5 hours here I was defeated it was in the blazing sun of the heat wave we had in July 2018. Watercress thrives all along the Itchen valley in its once pristine, crystal clear waters, now affected by some farming practices.

A fair amount of the curtain wall remains, but nearly all the inner arrangements are gone, though it is possible to make out the hall, in which there is a good round arch and one surviving Norman window.

Winchester City Mill stands over the River Itchen in Winchester – which was the capital of King Alfred’s Wessex - since Saxon times. With a history of 1000 years, Winchester City Mill is also the oldest working watermill in Britain. A rare and classic surviving example of a working corn mill, the City Mill was rebuilt around 1744 and remained in use until the early 20th Century. The National Trust took over the running in the late 1920’s, when it was restored to full working order in 2004. When you visit, you'll find hands-on activities and audio-visual displays about milling. As the Gateway to the South Downs National Park, the City Mill also provides information if you're looking to explore local walks and attractions, as well as the many other local National Trust properties.

In the aftermath of World War II, the United States spent 12 years looking for a successor to the M1 Garand rifle. The new standard infantry arm was expected to be select-fire, lightweight, accurate, controllable, and fire a heavy .30-caliber projectile. It would replace not just the M1, but also the BAR and perhaps the M1 Carbine as well - a true universal weapon. Of course, these requirements were complete fantasy, unachievable in the real world - but that did not prevent Remington, Springfield Arsenal, and Winchester from trying to meet them.
This rifle is a Winchester prototype, which has been substantially lightened from the M1 it began life as. A pistol grip has been added, along with a fire selector lever and a box magazine system. A detachable lightweight bipod allows it to be used for supporting fire. I do not know exactly when it was made, but it is chambered for the T65 or 7.62 NATO cartridge, which dates it as definitely post-WWII.

The walk will take around an hour before finishing back at the Royal Oak where you can join us back down stairs and have a chat about your experiences with our team. The bar will still be open so you can purchase refreshments again.

I decided to make a trip to Winchester on the 24th July 2018. I had never been before. Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. It is situated about 61 miles south west of London and around 13 from Southampton which is its closest city. Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum. The city is, home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still using its original buildings. There is so much to see here in this fine city and spending a day here you would find it difficult to cover all the famous sites.
To name a few the Cathedral, Wolvesey Castle or Old Bishop's Palace the River Itchen walk, the old site of Winchester Castle the Great Hall being all that remains now, The Guild Hall, Winchester City Museum, The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum and Memorial Gardens, Westgate Museum, The Royal Green Jackets Museum, Winchester's Military Museums, King Alfred the Great - Statue which stands in The Broadway, Winnall Moors Nature Reserve which can be found at Durngate Place, Winchester, Abbey Gardens, 21 Colebrook St, Winchester, After spending about 5 hours here I was defeated it was in the blazing sun of the heat wave we had in July 2018. I managed to walk the River Itchen walk, see Winchester Cathedral, along with Wolvesey Castle, The Great Hall.
Winchester Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral in Winchester. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the longest nave and the greatest overall length of any Gothic cathedral in Europe. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity,Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and before the Reformation, Saint Swithun, it is the seat of the Bishop of Winchester and centre of the Diocese of Winchester. The cathedral is a Grade I listed building. The cathedral was founded in 642 AD on a site immediately to the north of the present one.
The River Itchen in Winchester flows from mid Hampshire to join with Southampton Water below the Itchen Bridge in Southampton. The river has a total length of 28 miles and is noted as one of the world's premier chalk streams for fly fishing. Watercress thrives all along the Itchen valley in its once pristine, crystal clear waters, now affected by some farming practices.
Wolvesey Castle, Old Bishop's Palace, was created by Henry of Blois in 1141 by linking the two Norman halls with a curtain wall which would have finally obliterated any remaining parts of the Anglo-Saxon palace. The extensive surviving ruins are owned and maintained by English Heritage. The castle has had Grade I listed status since March 1950, along with the palace located on the same site. A fair amount of the curtain wall remains, but nearly all the inner arrangements are gone, though it is possible to make out the hall, in which there is a good round arch and one surviving Norman window.
Winchester Castle is a medieval building and was founded in 1067. Only the Great Hall remains which houses a museum of the history of Winchester. The Great Hall is one of the finest surviving halls of the 13th century, contains the greatest symbol of medieval mythology, King Arthur’s Round Table and is all that now remains of Winchester Castle. See the iconic Round Table of Arthurian legend that has dominated Winchester’s ancient Great Hall for centuries.
Winchester College is an independent boarding school for boys in the British public school tradition, situated in Winchester, Hampshire. It has existed in its present location for over 600 years. Founded in 1382 Winchester College is believed to be the oldest continuously running school in the country. Our guided tours concentrate on the medieval heart of the College, and include Chamber Court; the 14th century Gothic Chapel, with one of the earliest examples of a wooden vaulted roof; College Hall, the original Scholars' dining room; School, the seventeenth century redbrick schoolroom and the original medieval cloister.

This is just some footage of me and my friends in a set of abandoned buildings, we scaled the outside of it then we just looked about, there is a jump between 2 buildings but doing tht would need a chest strap which we didnt have on hand at the time. There will be more stuff like this as there are plenty of buildings to climb.

From the Vault: Russian Winchester 1895 Military Rifle
For most of us, a Winchester lever action rifle evokes images of the Old West. Mention the Model 1895, and we think of Teddy Roosevelt's fondness for it as his Big Medicine hunting rifle, as well as … the Imperial Russian Army? Intrepid Brownells gun techs Steve Ostrem and Keith Ford are back at Rock Island Auctions to show us a pristine, out-of-the-box-new Russian Winchester 1895. During World War I, Russia's need for infantry rifles so outstripped their arsenals' ability to produce Mosin-Nagant 1891 bolt action rifles, that huge orders were placed with Winchester for a military version of the 1895 chambered in 7.62x54R. It has a musket stock, bayonet lug, Russian-type rear sight, and provisions to use same stripper clips as the Mosin-Nagant. After service in the Great War and the Revolution of 1917, most surviving Russian 1895s are pretty beat up, but not this one - a VERY collectible example!

From the time of Alfred the Great until after the Norman Conquest, Winchester was England’s capital and the Cathedral was its royal chapel. Much of England’s early history was based here and twelve English kings are believed to be buried here – meaning that Winchester can lay claim to being the first Royal Mausoleum.
The opening of Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation marks the culmination of an ambitious seven-year project to unlock the Cathedral’s stories and treasures by inspiring active engagement in the interpretation and exploration of our heritage.
Thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and other generous supporters, a spectacular three-level exhibition space in the South Transept will take visitors on a journey through over 1,000 years of history, whilst offering awe-inspiring views of the Cathedral.
