Winchester City Mill - Winchester, Hampshire, England (The National Trust)

Winchester city mill
Winchester City Mill is located in the ancient English city of Winchester, on a site used for milling flour since Saxon times. It is powered by the fast-flowing River Itchen, which can be seen passing under the mill. Rebuilt in 1744 on a medieval mill site, it remained in use until the early 20th century. A few years ago a restoration project was undertaken and the mill has now once again resumed grinding flour. It is now owned by The National Trust and can be visited most days between march and December.

Winchester City Mill Hampshire 2018 - National Trust
A short video taken on Saturday 8th December 2018 showing Winchester City Mill in Hampshire. It has stood at the heart of the historic city of Winchester – the capital of King Alfred’s Wessex - since Saxon times. With a history of over 1000 years, Winchester City Mill is also the oldest working watermill in the country.
A rare surviving example of an urban working corn mill, the City Mill was rebuilt in 1744 and remained in use until the early 20th Century. Having entered the care of the National Trust in the late 1920’s, the City Mill was restored to full working order in 2004.
When you visit, you'll find hands-on activities and audio-visual displays about milling and the rich wildlife in the area. Or you can take in one of our regular milling and baking demonstrations.
As the official Gateway to the South Downs National Park, the City Mill also provides information if you're looking to explore local walks and attractions, as well as the many other local National Trust properties.
Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Winchester City Mill
There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility. In this episode I visit Winchester in Hampshire to go to the City Mill. This is a restored waterwheel mill, that is still producing flour every weekend. Unfortunately for me, the access was not the best.

Hello everyone...
Winchester is a city in the county of Hampshire, on the edge of England's South Downs National Park. It’s known for medieval Winchester Cathedral, with its 17th-century Morley Library, the Winchester Bible, and a Norman crypt. Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the Winchester City Mill, a working 18th-century corn mill. The Great Hall of Winchester Castle houses the medieval round table linked to King Arthur.

Winchester is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. The city of Winchester lies at the heart of the wider City of Winchester, a local government district, and is located at the western end of the South Downs National Park, along the course of the River Itchen. Winchester is situated 61 miles (98 km) south-west of London and 13.6 miles (21.9 km) from Southampton, its closest city.
Winchester developed from the Roman town of Venta Belgarum, which in turn developed from an Iron Age oppidum. Winchester's major landmark is Winchester Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the distinction of having the longest nave and overall length of all Gothic cathedrals in Europe. The city is home to the University of Winchester and Winchester College, the oldest public school in the United Kingdom still to be using its original buildings.
Winchester is situated on a bed of cretaceous lower chalk with small areas of clayey and loamy soil, inset with combined clay and rich sources of Fuller's earth. Aside from the city centre, there are several suburbs and neighbourhoods within the city, including:
Hyde
Abbotts Barton
Fulflood
Weeke
Winnall
Highcliffe
Stanmore
Upper Stanmore
Lower Stanmore
Teg Down
Badger Farm
Oliver's Battery
St. Cross
Bar End
Harestock
Winchester is located near the M3 motorway and at the meeting of the A34, A31, A3090 and A272 roads. Once a major traffic bottleneck, the city still suffers from congestion at peak times. A Roman road originating in Salisbury called The Clarendon Way ends in Winchester. Winchester railway station is served by South West Trains trains from London Waterloo, Weymouth, Portsmouth and Southampton, as well as by CrossCountry between Bournemouth, and either Manchester or Newcastle via Birmingham.
