Reducing fear of birth in U.S. culture: Ina May Gaskin at TEDxSacramento
Ina May Gaskin, MA, CPM, PhD (Hon), is founder and director of the Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee. The 41-year-old midwifery service is noted for its women-centered care. Early in her career, Gaskin learned an effective method for dealing with a feared obstetrical complication (when baby's shoulders become stuck during birth) from indigenous midwives in Guatemala. Years later, the low-intervention Gaskin Maneuver became the first obstetrical procedure to be named for a midwife in this era. The Farm Midwifery Center is noted for its low rates of intervention, morbidity and mortality despite the inclusion of many vaginally delivered breeches, twins and mothers of more than five babies. Author of several books, she promotes joyful birth, maintenance of breech skills and recognition of certain ingenious skills and techniques used by indigenous midwives of Mexico and Brazil. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from Thames Valley University, London, England and Shenandoah University, Winchester, Virginia. In December of 2011, she received the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Tennessee's Natural Bridge
In Franklin County Tennessee, just a few miles from Monteagle Mountain, you will find an amazing Natural Bridge, carved by nature, just for you to appreciate how amazing nature really is. In this video, we explore Tennessee’s Natural Bridge.
We didn’t actually mean to stumble upon the Natural Bridge, we were actually heading to the Judd’s estate. Not that we were invited or anything but we heard we could see the estate from the road. But it turns out we weren’t even close to that area, but we did find Tennessee’s Natural Bridge and it’s pretty amazing. We also remind everyone about the upcoming eclipse, which is a Nose For Life Event in Spring City, Tennessee, and we also provide a quick update about my health. Enjoy the video! Links to follow.

BCUSA Scout-Kayak Trip 27 Jul 12
Went on a scouting trip near a small own called Milford GA with fellow BCUSA Member Winchester. Had a great dinner of steak, stuffed mushrooms and potatoes, hung out and shot the bull all night, hit the hammocks and woke up the next morning ready to kayak! Did a 7.4 mile paddle on the Ichawaynochaway Creek, a tributary of the Flint River. It even had some rapids at the end. The name is believed to be Muskogee Indian and translates as The place where the deer sleep.
Had a great time and a big ol' thankee to Winchester, Scott and Vicky!

Simon Winchester: The Men Who United the States... | Talks at Google
Moderated by Andrew Littell
Simon Winchester, the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of Atlantic and The Professor and the Madman, delivers his first book about America: The Men Who United the States: America's Explorers, Inventors, Eccentrics and Mavericks, and the Creation of One Nation, Indivisible, a fascinating popular history that illuminates the men who toiled fearlessly to discover, connect, and bond the citizenry and geography of the U.S.A. from its beginnings.
How did America become one nation, indivisible? What unified a growing number of disparate states into the modern country we recognize today? To answer these questions, Winchester follows in the footsteps of America's most essential explorers, thinkers, and innovators, such as Lewis and Clark and the leaders of the Great Surveys; the builders of the first transcontinental telegraph and the powerful civil engineer behind the Interstate Highway System. He treks vast swaths of territory, from Pittsburgh to Portland, Rochester to San Francisco, Seattle to Anchorage, introducing the fascinating people who played a pivotal role in creating today's United States.
Throughout, he ponders whether the historic work of uniting the States has succeeded, and to what degree. Featuring 32 illustrations throughout the text, The Men Who United the States is a fresh look at the way in which the most powerful nation on earth came together.

American Sniper: Chris Kyle's rifle - in 60 seconds
The Telegraph looks at the rifle used by US Navy Seal Chris Kyle in the hit film American Sniper - the McMillan TAC-338.
Bradley Cooper stars as Navy Seal Chris Kyle in the Oscar-nominated film American Sniper, a biographical drama based on Kyle's experiences as a highly-skilled marksman in Iraq.
According to Department of Defense, Kyle is the deadliest marksman in US military history.
But what is the weapon that brought him such notoriety? Behold the McMillan TAC-338, a heavy-barrel, bolt-action weapon that has been known to hit targets from more than 2,000 yards away.
Kyle used the McMillan TAC-338 in Iraq in 2008 when he killed an insurgent who was about to fire on convoy - at a distance of 1.2 miles.
The deadly weapon, which packs .338 Lapua Magnum bullets, weighs and costs less than a .50 caliber bullet.
It can also be fitted with a bipod which enables the sniper to fire lying down.

Memphis: Overton Park
Overton Park is a large, 342-acre (138 ha) public park in Midtown Memphis. The park grounds contain the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis Zoo, a 9-hole golf course, the Memphis College of Art, Rainbow Lake, Veterans Plaza, the Greensward, and other features. The Old Forest Arboretum of Overton Park, one of the few remaining old growth forests in Tennessee, is a natural arboretum with labeled trees along trails.
The property, once known locally as Lea’s Woods, was purchased by Memphis on November 14, 1901, for $110,000; it was located along the city's eastern and northern boundary at that time. Overton Park was designed by landscape architect George Kessler as part of a comprehensive plan that also included Riverside Park (later M.L. King Riverside Park) and the Memphis Parkway System. The planning began in 1901, and Overton Park was established in 1906. The park is named in honor of John Overton, a co-founder of Memphis. Overton’s name was selected in a competition to name the new park conducted by the Evening Scimitar, a local newspaper; the three choices in the voting were Memphis founding fathers Andrew Jackson, Overton, and James Winchester. The official naming occurred on July 25, 1902.
The Brooks Museum is a privately funded, nonprofit art museum located in Overton Park. Founded in 1916, the Brooks Museum is the oldest and largest art museum in the state of Tennessee.
Overton Park also includes the famous Shell theater, where Elvis Presley gave his first paid concert on July 30, 1954.
Memphis College of Art is a small, private college of art and design located in Overton Park. It offers Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts in Art Education and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees.
Overton Park Zoo (now named the Memphis Zoo) began in 1906 when a resident of Memphis couldn't keep his pet black bear in his backyard. He had it put in a pen in the park, which attracted many people, inspiring the idea to place more animals on display. The Memphis Zoo is now one of the largest in the United States, attracting 1 million visitors per year. The zoo houses two pandas, who are local celebrities, as well as three polar bears, brought in to the Northwest Passage exhibition which opened in March 2006.
In 2008, the Memphis Zoo was ranked #1 Zoo in the U.S. by TripAdvisor.com. In independent surveys commissioned by TripAdvisor, the Memphis Zoo scored a 90 percent overall satisfaction score, almost 25 percent higher than the national zoo average.
The 9-hole Overton Park Golf Course is located in the southwestern part of Overton Park. It is a 2,222-yard, par 34 courses with 3 sets of teeboxes for different levels of golfing experience. Built in 1926, the Abe Goodman Golf Clubhouse is a Tudor-styled, brick building with a patio.
