Wincobank Light Up The Hill - Behind the Scenes
Behind the scenes at Wincobank's annual Lantern Procession and Pageant. Each November, on Wincobank Hill in Sheffield, South Yorkshire UK, over 250 people walk by torchlight through ancient woodland and climb up to the hill fort in the dark to watch a re-enactment of the crucial moment in history when Queen Cartimandua of the Brigantes handed over the rebel King Caratacus to the Romans, in chains. On the way they see trees lit up by candle lamps, hear the haunting music of the lone piper Helena Reynolds on the hillside, see the University of Sheffield's fiery Iron Age forge and sway to Celtic melodies.

Wincobank Hill Fort
The prehistoric Wincobank HiIl Fort is a Scheduled Monument. Surrounded by ancient woodland of oak, beech and birch, it occupies a commanding position on the hilltop overlooking the Lower Don Valley in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
Nearby, runs the route of the Roman Ridge, an ancient earthwork the origins and purpose of which are still a mystery. Previously thought to be a Roman road, the ridge which runs from Sheffield to Mexborough is now thought by some to be an even earlier construction, possibly to mark ancient boundaries.

Sheffield is a city in the English county of South Yorkshire. In the city centre, the Millennium Gallery shows metalwork and art from Sheffield and around the world. It adjoins the Winter Garden, a large temperate glasshouse filled with plants. Kelham Island Museum covers the city’s industrial heritage. The nearby countryside is part of Peak District National Park, characterised by moorland and rocky ridges.
Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Sheffield name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city of Sheffield has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.
In the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Known as the Steel City, many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893.
The city has a long sporting heritage, and is home to the world's oldest football club, Sheffield F.C. Games between the two professional clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, are known as the Steel City derby. The city is also home to the World Snooker Championship.

At the fort a costumed re-enactment is given of events between the 'Brigantes' (Wicobankers?), their King (Caratacus), their queen (Cartimandua) and an envoy representing Rome (Marcus, commander of the - ultimately ill-fated - 9th legion).

This is the view from the fort, I like to imagine what the celts, who lived here thousands of years ago, thought about looking out at the same view as modern humans.

Wardsend Cemetery at Owlerton, Sheffield
Wardsend Cemetery opened on 21st June 1857 as the burial ground for St.Philp's Church on Infimary Road Sheffield (now demolished) It was located in what was then a beautiful, rural location on the banks of the River Don. The final burial took place in 1977 and the cemetery was officially closed in 1988. It has been increasingly neglected over the years and has become a haven for wildlife. This historic Victorian cemetery is the last resting place of over 30,000 Sheffield and district people and home to plants and animals that have adopted this site over the last 160 years.

Jenkin Road in Sheffield, revisited, 03 09 17 at 07:15
This is a short and simple Sunday morning video of me trying Jenkin Road hill climb again after a few months to see if I have improved my time or not.
Truth be told, I found it much easier than last time and I was quicker by at least 2 minutes. This after a Saturday night out at the Bierkeller as well.
