DoepelStrijkers, Dutch Windwheel Building As A Service 2019
The Dutch Windwheel Innovation Program Foundation and its partners invite interested parties to view the Mock-up and its smart building as a service innovations in Blijdorp Zoo. The Dutch Windwheel project: Smart Spaces as a Service received financial support last year from the IPC (Innovation Performance Contract) South Holland scheme. The project also received a Greendeal Dutch Windwheel. With the deal, governments have accelerated the development of this Rotterdam icon for energy transition and technological innovation. Last year, the Dutch Windwheel Consortium, together with partners from the Windwheel Innovation Program and with eleven SMEs, created a smart, circular and flexible office, hotel and living space. Hereby, companies from the interior design industry worked together with technology companies that specialize in sensors and IT.
In 2015, The Dutch Windwheel Corporation presented the plans for a fully sustainable iconic building. Now, four years later, the Dutch Windwheel Innovation Program Foundation and its partners invite interested parties to view the mock-up and its smart building as a service innovations in Blijdorp Zoo. It is a demonstration and testing laboratory for some of the solutions the Dutch Windwheel will integrate into the building, such as a climate facade and which produces energy.
Mock-up
The mock-up measures 7.5 x 7.5 meters and will prove an interesting experience for anyone involved in progressive architecture and resilient building. The architectural office and its partners looked beyond the design and simply the energetic performance. The mock-up is built from a biobased flexible wooden building system. The aim is to create a healthy environment and build in a circular fashion. Even the installations are adaptable through the use of the flexible floor system. In addition, there is a circular water system with integrated green wall in the winter garden linked to a ecological external water filter.
Smart sensoring
Two research directions have been worked out. The first is smart sensoring & control; The energy performance of the building is improved by continuously collecting data. This is achieved by, among other things, energy and data generating windows, energy producing tiles, louvers that provide extra energy behind the glass and slats that rotate with the sun as a sunblind. The sensors are part of a sensor network that monitors and controls the indoor climate. In addition, they provide information to a digital interactive platform to realize an ideal working environment for the building and the users. The second area of research is interior as a service. Products remain the property of the supplier and are only paid for in use. Material innovations are explored within this cluster. Think of a lightweight carbon fibre ceiling system, a sanitary unit made of air-purifying material with integrated sensors and walls and objects constructed from a circular modular 3D click system, so that interior adjustments can be made easily in the future.
New goals
Over the past few years, the initiators have increasingly adjusted their goals. In the meantime, not only the interior has been leased, the façade has also become a service element. In addition, the WELL standard has been embraced. This is a tool to map the health of the building from construction to operation. This comprehensive international standard also includes air, water, nutrition and light in the assessment, because these aspects positively influence comfort, vitality and a mental health.
Future
The opening of the Mock-up on 24 September in Blijdorp is also the official completion of the Green Deal innovation project. Work will continue on the innovations defined by the IPC partners in the coming year. The implemented current state of the innovations will be tested and improved. But The Dutch Windwheel goes further. Within the Green Deal, a location survey is being conducted and the team will present the future plans at the end of October.

Amsterdam-Rhine Canal:
Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, Dutch Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, Dutch waterway connecting the port of Amsterdam with the Rhine River. From Amsterdam the canal passes to the southeast through Utrecht on its way to the Waal River near Tiel. Inaugurated in 1952, the canal has a total length of 72 km (45 miles) and contains four locks. It was enlarged in the 1970s and reopened in 1981. It is the most heavily used canal in western Europe and can handle up to four 3,000-ton lighters (unpowered barges) tied together and push-towed by a tug. The canal’s minimum depth is 5.5 metres (18 feet).

Holland's Barriers to The Sea
The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples:
1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea.
2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam. Closing the arms of the barrier is a completely automated process done without human intervention.

Dutch windmill water-pump home as climate adaptation lesson
Imagine a house that uses windpower to pump water to regulate its surroundings and for his energy needs. Dutch windmills show how skills, trial and error, and maintenance can keep the worst surrounding risks at bay. A few years ago, Maarten van Dijk went jogging by an old windmill near his home in Abcoude (Utrecht, Netherlands) and was intrigued by the half-abandoned building. Before long, he had become caretaker of the historic structure (under a leasing agreement with a foundation that owns 23 mills in the area), taking classes to learn to operate it and renovating the home that fills its base.
Beginning in the early 1500s the Dutch built windmills to help shape their country- to pump water out of areas below sea level- and while Van Dijk’s mill is no longer used for land drainage (it was replaced by more modern technology in the 1950s), it is still operational. With his formal training, Van Dijk can “run the mill” - adding sails to the wooden structure to catch the wind.
He is part of a long Dutch tradition of apprentices who learn the trade with first-hand experience and who help to push the technology forward. “With 20,000 windmills a lot of technology, a lot of people working in it,” explains Van Dijk. “And what I also heard is nowadays anyone who has a technical intelligent mind works at Phillips or at some kind of big industry. In those days they would just be at home and if I had had six children one of them might have been bright and one of them would say, ‘Hey dad why don’t we do it differently, why don’t we change this part for this part’, and local developments would spread all over.”
Maarten and his wife currently rent the space for overnight guests, but they hope to live in it full-time once they retire.

On a recent trip to the Netherlands I had the opportunity to capture footage of a few Dutch windmills. I used the footage to create this “Pop-Up” movie with small factoids of the windmills I visited. I hope you enjoy it.

HOLLAND GLORY IN HD
The Netherlands is famous for its windmills. Today there are still more than 1.000 mills. Nowhere in the world you will find as many windmills as near (the Dutch village) Kinderdijk. Around 1740 no less than 19 sturdy mills were built here. They have been well preserved to the present day.
The mills drain the excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders - which are situated below sea-level - after which the water is sluiced into the river Lek (the Rijn).
The powerful mill sails serve to transmit the force of the wind on to large paddle-wheels which scoop up the water. Nowadays power-driven pumping engines do the job, including one of the largest water screw pumping-stations in Western Europe.
The Foundation Wereld Erfgoed Kinderdijk maintains and preserves the windmills in Kinderdijk. The preservation is not limited to the windmills themselves, but also covers the area in which the windmills are situated.
The Foundation makes use of funds from the government and the members of the foundation each contribute to the cost of maintenance. Additional sponsoring should take care of reducing the backlog of repairs.
In 1997 the mills of Kinderdijk were put on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. A brief description states:
The outstanding contribution made by the people of the Netherlands to the technology of handling water is admirably demonstrated by the installations in the Kinderdijk-Elshout area. Construction of hydraulic works for the drainage of land for agriculture and settlement began in the Middle Ages and have continued uninterruptedly to the present day. The site illustrates all the typical features associated with this technology -- dykes, reservoirs, pumping stations, administrative buildings and a series of beautifully preserved windmills.

The Dutch are known as a biking people, but even at wind speed 7 they venture out on the road. Here some students at the Delft University of Technology are on their way to a seminar, when the forces them to step down. Even the iron railings next to the bike path are blowing over!
