New Plymouth Coastal Walkway - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 42: We’re in New Plymouth, Taranaki where our first Taranaki activity is to check out the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway!
Yesterday - Day 41 -
Tomorrow – Day 43 –
About this video:
It’s Day 42 on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where today’s activity is to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway!
After spending a morning at the Duck & Drakes Backpackers, we head to the coast of New Plymouth to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. There are loads of sculptures, art (and slides which we may or may not use) along the way. We also check out some rock pools.
Along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we see the Len Lye Wind Wand and the Te Rewarewa Bridge. They look particularly awesome at sunset.
From the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we make our way back into the city and back to the hostel.
What do you think of the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway? Is it something you would do in New Plymouth?

New Plymouth's Wind Wand at Night
New Plymouth's Wind Wand at Night
Designed by the late internationally renowned New Zealand artist Len Lye, the Wind Wand installation is on the walkway's central deck, takes pride of place on New Plymouth's Coastal Walkway.
This dramatic artwork is one of the most visible art pieces in the city. Its coastal location maximises its kinetic characteristics making it fascinating to watch during both calm and stormy weather can bend at least 20m, while being enhanced by its highly visible location and the backdrop of the Tasman Sea.
The 48-metre high kinetic sculpture, constructed out of fiberglass and carbon fibers is strong enough to stand upright but flexible enough to easily bend and sway in the breeze. By night, the red sphere on the top containing 1,296 light-emitting diodes (LED's), emits a soft, red glow.
Lightning Strikes Wind Wand Art Sculpture in New Zealand || ViralHog
Occurred on September 17, 2017 / New Plymouth, New Zealand
A lightning storm was predicted to hit our town, so I set up the camera to record the storm rolling in when I was able to capture this shot of it directly hitting the Wind Wand art sculpture.

New Plymouth - NEW ZEALAND
New Plymouth
New Plymouth (Māori: Ngāmotu) is the major city of the Taranaki Region on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It is named after the English city of Plymouth from where the first English settlers migrated. The New Plymouth District includes New Plymouth City and several smaller towns. The New Plymouth District is the 10th largest district (out of 67) in New Zealand, and has 1.7 percent of New Zealand's population.[1] The district has a population of 74,184 – about two-thirds of the total population of the Taranaki Region. This includes New Plymouth City (57,500), Waitara (6,483), Inglewood (3,380), Oakura (1,359), Okato (561) and Urenui (429).[2]
The city itself is a service centre for the region's principal economic activities including intensive pastoral activities (mainly dairy farming) as well as oil, natural gas and petrochemical exploration and production. It is also the region's financial centre as the home of the TSB Bank (formerly the Taranaki Savings Bank), the largest of the remaining non-government New Zealand-owned banks.
Notable features are the botanic gardens (i.e. Pukekura Park), the critically acclaimed Len Lye Centre and Art Gallery, the 11 km (6.8 mi) Coastal Walkway alongside the Tasman Sea, the Len Lye-designed 45-metre-tall (148 ft) artwork known as the Wind Wand, Paritutu Rock, and views of Mount Taranaki/Egmont.
As described under awards, New Plymouth won multiple awards in 2008. The city was in 2010 chosen as one of two walking & cycling Model Communities by the government. Based on New Plymouth's already positive attitude towards cyclists and pedestrians, the city received $3.71m to invest into infrastructure and community programs to boost walking and cycling.[3]
It is also noted for being a coastal city with a mountain within 30 minutes drive, where residents and visitors to New Plymouth can snowboard, ski, water ski and surf all in the same day.
