Dalai Lama Wants to Visit Quake-Hit Qinghai Province, China
Dalai Lama Wants to Visit Quake-Hit Qinghai Province, China
2010-04-19 11:17
After a devastating earthquake shook northwestern Qinghai Province in China last week, the Dalai Lama appealed to Chinese leaders to allow him to visit the disaster zone.
The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was born in Qinghai and the province, which borders Tibet, is home to many ethnic Tibetan communities. So far, more than 1,400 people have died in the earthquake.
In Dharamshala, India, the Dalai Lama said on Saturday he wishes to visit the region to help people cope with the tragedy.
[Dalai Lama, Head of State and Spiritual Leader of Tibet]:
I want to go there and to share their sorrow and their pain, and want to say some kind of prayer.
Many of the inhabitants of the quake-hit region are loyal to the Dalai Lama. Chinese authorities have prohibited temples from openly displaying pictures of the Dalai Lama, but many in Qinghai do so anyway.
Quake survivor Denzing Pangcuo said he would welcome the Dalai Lama if he came.
[Denzing Pangcuo, Quake Survivor]:
Of course, our faith has not changed. We are all Buddhists and we will welcome him if he comes.
Another survivor said a visit would raise the Tibetan peoples spirits.
[Tsere Nonja, Quake Survivor]:
We hope that the Dalai Lama can come and take a look here. He can come help us here in this Tibetan neighborhood. It's good if he can come.
This isnt the first time the Dalai Lama has tried to help with disaster relief in China. In 2008 he tried to donate money to the relief effort for the Sichuan earthquake, but the Chinese Embassy in New Dehli refused to accept the donation.
He also visited Taiwan in 2009 to pray for victims and survivors of Typhoon Morakot. The move angered the Chinese Communist Party leaders, who consider Taiwan part of Chinas territory.
The Dalai Lama has been living in India since fleeing Tibet after a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese Communist Party rule. While the Chinese regime calls the Dalai Lama a separatist, the Tibetan spiritual leader maintains he has no political aspirations and only asks for genuine autonomy for Tibet.
Embracing adventures: Mountain films getting popular in China
Mt. Qomolangma expeditions have been one of the most popular themes for mountain films. But this one is different. “Farther Than the Eye Can See” beautifully captures the emotion, humor and drama of blind climber Erik Weihenmayer’s historic ascent, as well as four other remarkable “firsts” on the mountain.

Douglas-Hamilton flies over Everest 80-years after first flight
On the 80th anniversary of the first manned flight over Everest by British pilot Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, his grandson Charles repeated the journey.
On April 3, 1933 Douglas-Hamilton and Flight Lieutenant David Fowler MacIntyre flew two open-cockpit biplanes at around 9,150 metres barely clearing the summit.
Charles was able to enjoy all the luxury of modern aviation however.
Many Nepali airlines now offer flights around some of the world's highest peaks in the Himalayas.
The original Everest flights grabbed international headlines and a documentary film Wings Over Everest won an Oscar in 1934.
