GREECE: The beautiful WINDMILLS, island of PATMOS (ΠΑΤΜΟΣ) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - On a very windy day, let's go visit the beautiful windmills on the spectacular Greek island of Patmos in the Aegean sea.
Built east of the Holy Monastery of Patmos, on the top of the hill with view of the sea, the three windmills of Chora (only two of them are shown here) were fully restored in 2010 and they can be characterized as another jewel of the island, which was awarded by Europa Nostra.
The two windmills that you see here (which date back to 1588) fell into disuse in the late 1950s, when the industrial milling replaced the traditional production.
Kos, one of Greece’s Dodecanese islands, is known for its abundant sandy beaches. It’s also rich with Greek and Roman landmarks, particularly in and around Kos Town. This harbor town is dominated by the 15th-century Neratzia Castle. South of the castle are the Ancient Agora ruins, with a temple, shrine and columns. The 3rd-century Casa Romana villa has lavish mosaics.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

GREECE: Island of PATMOS, the beautiful 18th century WINDMILLS ????

Let's go to the beautiful Greek island of PATMOS and let's visit the historic windmills on the hill opposite the Holy Abbey of Saint Ioannis the Theologian. That hill is dominated by three imposing traditional windmills, the cloth blades of which turn again after 50 years of disuse and abandonment. The windmills, that in the 1700s were dedicated to the Abbey, were abandoned in 1950 and fell into disuse after 400 and more years of serving the residents of island. The instigator of the restoration and their re-operation was the Swiss philhellinist banker Charles Pictet, co financed by the Stavros Niarchos institution and other private individuals which once again give life to the windmills of Patmos. Today, only the northern mill can be visited (the one that it is on the right as you see them from the rear) which has been restored completely.

Windmills of the Monastery of St John the Theologian, Chora, Patmos, GREECE
Who could resist a sense of exhilaration at the sight of these windmills, in a row, on top of the island, fully restored and spinning against the sky? The jury was asked to consider several different mills from across Europe for this year's awards and comparisons were therefore inevitable. Among the windmills, the jury agreed that this group in Patmos was outstanding in the detail and completeness of its restoration, and the imaginative uses to which each mill was to be put for future production or education. As a group, the three form an integral part of the island landscape's aesthetic as well as contributing to its economy as an important and original example of proto-industrial heritage.

Arriving around midnight by ferry on the island of Patmos, I decided to reserve my first hotel close to Port Skala. It actually turned into a necessary transitional time to fix some of the problems that 34 hours of travel can bring.
Two days later with everything I travel with strapped to the back of a 4wheel ATV, I bid farewell to the port side of the island and make my way to a boutique hotel located at Grikos Bay that will become home for the rest of the week.
The Windmills of Patmos
Built in the east of the Holy Monastery of St. John the Theologian, on the top of the hill with view of the sea, the three windmills of Chora gave their name to the neighboring district of Mili.
