Solo Winter Cold Camp - Ramona Lake, Western Uplands Trail, Algonquin Park
For two days last week, I took some time alone to backpack from the trailhead of the Western Uplands Backpacking Trail at the Oxtongue River Picnic Ground to Ramona Lake and back. The hike north from the parking lot was made easier by a party of hot tent winter campers that broke trail to Guskewau Lake, but soft deep powder beyond that point to Ramona Lake required the use of snowshoes. The temperature was -24C when I set out and dropped to -29C that night, but it proved to be a comfortable temperature for hiking and for sleeping in my -30C sleeping bag and Outdoor Research bivy.

Traditional Canoe Camping on the North Channel of the French River with Fresh Fish Tacos for lunch
After a thirty year absence, I finally returned to the 18 Mile Island section of the French River in Ontario for a solo, three-day circumnavigation. By planning my trip for mid-week (Tuesday to Thursday) in mid June, I almost had the entire river to myself, and it was glorious. Departing the docks at Loon's Landing on Dry Pine Bay near Highway 69 on Thursday morning, the anticipation was high. I wanted to revisit rapids and campsites that I had first seen with three buddies on a June trip back in 1987, and I wanted to re-experience the great fishing that the French River is known for.

May 6 to 11, 2015
Introduction: After planning this trip last fall and choosing my dates based on historical ice-out dates in Algonquin Provincial Park, I was extremely anxious watching the weather in April and reading the Park’s statement that the backcountry would remain closed until May 8th. But, finally on May 3rd(ish), the weather changed, the ice went out and the permit offices were open for business. I was ready to go on my first solo trip of the season.

Tim River, Algonquin Provincial Park - One of my favourites!
Tim River, Algonquin Provincial Park
The Tim River is one of my favourite places in Algonquin Provincial Park, for a variety of reasons. It's scenic, secluded with less traffic than other locations in the park, full of Brook Trout, harbours plentiful wildlife and is surrounded by beautiful forests.
The Tim River is located just east of Kearney Ontario at Algonquin Park Access #2 - Tim River, about 270 kms north of Toronto, Canada. Because it is not located on the much busier Highway 60 corridor, it sees much less traffic and is therefore offers more solitude. Located in the western highlands, the topography is high and rolling with a wetter climate than the east side, providing ideal habitat for a number of hardwood tree species, particularly maple. As a result, the fall colours are usually spectacular.

BIG ALGONQUIN CANOE TRIP - DAY 4 - THE GIANT PORTAGE! (4K)
Vlog Ep.50 - Big Algonquin Canoe Trip - Day 4 - The Giant Portage! (4K) This video is about the 4th day of our canoe camping trip in Algonquin Park's interior, as we paddle up Big Crow Lake to the biggest portage of the entire trip, taking on a giant 3.75km trek through the forest. We then paddle a short while on Hogan Lake, leading us to our second portage of the day, before finally arriving at Lake La Muir and finding our campsite for the night, where we enjoy an evening by the campfire. We've also been filming select, interesting moments throughout each day of the trip with a 360° 4K VR camera (link to separate 360° video from the day below), and today's shots are from our paddle into Lake La Muir, as well as the relaxing campfire at our campsite on the lake! After the trip, we'll also post an unabridged version of all the 360° clips for those who would like to enjoy a longer VR experience in the park :)
__
There are several different ways to enjoy the 360° VR video linked below:
1. Select desktop web browsers like Google's Chrome, or Firefox will allow you to scroll through the 360° VR video by clicking / dragging the image on the screen left, right, up and down, so you can look around in the environment.
2. View the 360° VR video on your smartphone or tablet using YouTube's Mobile app (a free app on iOS or Android devices), which will allow you to pan and tilt your phone around in 3D space, almost as if it's a window in front of you that you can look through to see the VR environment around you - the YouTube Mobile app uses your device's internal gyroscopes to determine where you're looking... which is really cool!
3. View the 360° VR video through Google's Cardboard app (a free app on iOS and Android devices), and a relatively inexpensive head-mounted VR viewer, equipped with lenses designed to help you focus on your smartphone's screen. The app creates a stereoscopic version of the 360° video we filmed, which you can then put into a head-mounted VR viewer, which allows you to look around and almost feel like you're there inside the VR environment. The app uses your phone's own internal gyroscopes to determine where you're looking. Please note, your VR experience with this method depends on your phone's resolution and the quality of the VR headset you purchase. I personally own a Merge 360° VR headset which works with a range of different phones, and sells online at B&H Photo for around $79 CDN / $59 US, though you can find inexpensive VR viewers for as little as $15 - $20 by searching online. There are many to choose from - you generally get what you pay for though, and more expensive models will typically be more comfortable to wear for extended periods, or come equipped with more built-in adjustments for precisely aligning with your eye. Before buying any VR viewer, please ensure it will fit your phone. You may also want to enjoy this method while wearing stereo headphones.
4. View the 360° VR video through an Oculus Rift, or HTC Vive, which are much more expensive VR devices with their own software built-in.
Today's 360° video clips are moments are from our paddle into Lake La Muir, as well as the relaxing campfire at our campsite on the lake! Before you check it out, please don't forget to like, share or comment on today's vlog and let us know what you think! Thanks! It really helps us to create more content and moments like this :) ...today's 360° VR video link:
