Windsor Castle & Town of Windsor, England
It was a beautiful, sunny day when we visited the charming town of Windsor, England and the historic castle located there....Windsor Castle. The castle, which dates back to the 11th century is famous for being a residence of the royal family. While Queen Elizabeth conducts her primary duties while at Buckingham Palace in London, it is here she lives for the most part. Often, she will also conduct some of her duties while here. We were told that while we were here, she was in residence for the day, but did not have the chance to catch a glimpse of her.
As is expected, the castle is rich with history, St. George's Chapel is the place of worship that is located there. It has also held notable weddings, and is the burial place for many royals. The list of weddings and burials is to long to list here, but can be found by clicking on the following link:
When one first arrives at the castle, there is the opportunity to get a free tour of the overview of the castle before we are left on our own - our tour guide was charming, as well as funny.
The grounds of the castle are beautiful with colorful gardens. Coming for a visit here was one of the highlights of our England vacation. This included walking about the charming town of Windsor, quite a bit to see here as well, with many cafes to choose from. The old railway station has been converted into a nice shopping mall - we had arrived by bus; we took the train back to London. A wonderful day well spent.
Ed did all of the camcorder filming and narrations heard (with the exception of the voice of our tour guide). I did all of the other work of editing & uploading to You Tube.

A Walk Around Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is a royal residence at Windsor in the English county of Berkshire. The castle is notable for its long association with the English and later British royal family and also for its architecture. The original castle was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror. Since the time of Henry I, it has been used by succeeding monarchs and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe. The castle's lavish, early 19th-century State Apartments are architecturally significant, described by art historian Hugh Roberts as a superb and unrivalled sequence of rooms widely regarded as the finest and most complete expression of later Georgian taste. The castle includes the 15th-century St George's Chapel, considered by historian John Martin Robinson to be one of the supreme achievements of English Perpendicular Gothic design. More than 500 people live and work in Windsor Castle.
Originally designed to protect Norman dominance around the outskirts of London, and to oversee a strategically important part of the River Thames, Windsor Castle was built as a motte and bailey, with three wards surrounding a central mound. Gradually replaced with stone fortifications, the castle withstood a prolonged siege during the First Barons' War at the start of the 13th century. Henry III built a luxurious royal palace within the castle during the middle of the century, and Edward III went further, rebuilding the palace to produce an even grander set of buildings in what would become the most expensive secular building project of the entire Middle Ages in England. Edward's core design lasted through the Tudor period, during which Henry VIII and Elizabeth I made increasing use of the castle as a royal court and centre for diplomatic entertainment.
Windsor Castle survived the tumultuous period of the English Civil War, when it was used as a military headquarters for Parliamentary forces and a prison for Charles I. During the Restoration, Charles II rebuilt much of Windsor Castle with the help of architect Hugh May, creating a set of extravagant, Baroque interiors that are still admired. After a period of neglect during the 18th century, George III and George IV renovated and rebuilt Charles II's palace at colossal expense, producing the current design of the State Apartments, full of Rococo, Gothic and Baroque furnishings. Victoria made minor changes to the castle, which became the centre for royal entertainment for much of her reign. Windsor Castle was used as a refuge for the royal family during the Luftwaffe bombing campaigns of the Second World War, and survived a fire in 1992. It is a popular tourist attraction, a venue for hosting state visits, and the preferred weekend home of Elizabeth II.

It was actually a really gloomy day because of the rain but nevertheless, we queued for about 30 mins and finally managed to enter the Castle. Unfortunately, the famous places inside the castle, like the Doll House, didn't allow photography, so there isn't much footage. But hope you like it!

Now this is a story and a half. First a note of warning: Do not use Golden Tours when in London. We had a very bad experience with them.
OK so, for our second day in London we had a wonderful guided tour of Windsor, Bath and Stonehenge planned. I was super excited to see Stonehenge and the other two stops sounded interesting too. The bus was to pick us up at a hotel approximately 4 blocks from the KK George at 7:30 am sharp. We had a very early wake up call, scrambled to get ready in our tiny room and then went down to breakfast as they opened at 6:30 am. By 7:00 am we were on our way to the meeting spot. It didn't take us long to get there so we were in plenty of time. Then we waited, 7:30 passed without a bus, 7:45 passed, then at 8:00 a bustling woman (Ruth) came rushing in to gather us up. We boarded the bus with just one other woman. This was a shuttle bus that was just taking us down to the bus depot where we'd board the bus for our journey.
We arrived at the depot of Golden Tours around 8:45 am our bus was to leave at 9:00 am. We lined up and waited again.
After boarding we settled into the trip. Ruth was our tour guide and she had a lot to say about the sites we were passing while heading out of London. Everything was very interesting. After leaving London she told us she would not be able to talk to us while we were in the castle so she gave us the scoop on the kings and queens that lived and were buried there. This little lecture made the time pass very quickly. At 10:30 we arrived in Windsor and headed through the town to the entry area for the Castle. Ruth gave us the down low the entire time. After presenting our admission tickets we had to go through airport type security. Jim was stopped because he had his new flask in a pocket. They took it from him but gave him a receipt so he could retrieve it later. By 10:45 we were on the castle grounds and released on our own. Ruth reminded us to be back at the bus by 11:45. (that's one hour to tour a castle and the chapel where many kings and queens were buried). Jim and I thoroughly enjoyed the castle state rooms that were opened to visitors. We would have loved the audio tour but Ruth said it would take too long.
We strolled the grounds to St. George's Chapel and then gawked at the crypts there. Jim mentioned we needed to get going so we went back to the security area to retrieve Jim's flask. That's when I saw a clock. It was 11:40! Yikes. We had 5 minutes to retrieve the flask and get on the bus. Needless to say we ran through Windsor and arrived in the bus parking lot at 11:55, 10 minutes late. We fruitlessly ran around trying to find our bus. It was gone. THEY LEFT US IN WINDSOR. This was one and a half hours from London and our hotel. Jim and I were shocked and upset. We didn't know what to do or how to get back. There was a train station near by but we didn't know anything about it or how to find a schedule. A kindly bus driver from another company told us to find the Tourism Office and see if they could help. That was great advice. The people at the tourism office were wonderful. All three of the attendants worked hard to help us get back to London.
The first woman looked up the phone number for Golden Tours and let us use their phone to make a call. Jim talked to someone that was not very helpful and asked for a manager. The manager did not want to deal with us. We were told he's in a meeting. Jim demanded he come out of the meeting, and he did. Jim asked for a car to be sent to retrieve us. No, it is not their policy to help the people ...
