In 1985, Viñas del Vero and other wineries in the area founded the Somontano Designation of Origin, which, beyond being a quality parameter, signifies respect for a geographical origin and tradition, indicating that all the grapes used in the production of its wines come from the vineyards of the Somontano.
The name ‘Viñas del Vero’ originates from a river in the Somontano region, at the foot of the Pyrenees, famous for its ravines, gorges and canyons. Viñas el Vero was established in the Somontano at the end of 1986 with the acquisition of 550 hectares of land in Barbastro and other nearby towns. In 1987, they started to replant the land with a variety of traditional vineyards from the region (Tempranillo, Moristel, Garnacha and Macabeo), together with other varieties with different origins (Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir).

Spanish excursion ICHK
Thursday 26th of November 2015 was a very special day, in the broad and tasty sense!
The Spanish excursion started with a bus-class. El Profe prepared an interactive lesson so that we could practice while travelling to Wanchai with ICHK driver, Mr. Ho.
We even had a pre-arranged seating plan (gracias, Óscar) and Mr Ho safely stopped at the bus stops every 20 minutes to allow us to change partners (a class on wheels, kind of dancing but in language sense!!).
Nobody forgot buckling up, by the way, but Ting Kok Rd was a challenge in terms of reading in motion, you know...
With the help of the handouts and our notes we were able to maintain interesting conversations with different school mates from different year groups, and kept faithful to the condition in this trip: Use only our target language at all occasions! It was not that hard but some of us got really hungry talking so much about food...
Once in Quemo restaurant, we were welcome for the lecturer, Mr Borja Sánchez, and his Spanish-speaking team. It was great to see our former ICHK teacher, Ms Thrush, that was invited by Mr Arriaga to bring two of her Yr11 students from CIS. Gracias, Keena!
El menú del día
1.- Degustación de jamón ibérico Casa Lola: 5 star ham degustation with iberico professionals from Spain Miguel and Manuel (together the add 40 years of experience slicing ham, can you believe this? Iberico ham is a more than a profession, it is a lifestyle) .
2.- Gazpacho might poorly translate as cold tomato soup, but this name is probably not going to make it an appetizing choice... However, when the tomatoes are good... it is a whole different game. They used barbastro type, from Spain. Juicy from the heart of it to the thin skin.
3.- Patatas bravas: potato with brava sauce, the pimentón makes all the difference, but even the potatoes were different (agria type, imported from Spain).
4.- Calamares a la andaluza: fried in just flour, not egg. Amazing little difference. Simple and natural.
5.- Tortilla de patata: Spanish locals' favourite dish, the potato omelette (with or without onion... experts seem to choose the one with onion, this one was juicy).
6.- Croquetas de jamón: Possible the most elaborated classic tapa of all. The ham croquette always reflects the quality of the whole restaurant. These ones were finger-licking.
7.- Ensalada verde: fresh green salad. Helps cleaning the palate for next tapa.
8.- Escalivada: oven roasted peppers, eggplant, onions, garlic... served cold, as a salad.
9.- Huevos rotos con sobrasada: broken eggs with chorizo paste and potatoes. Sounds simple, taste extraterrestrial.
10.- Churros con chocolate: probably inspired from the Chinese 油炸鬼through the Portuguese in Macau.
11.- Espuma de crema catalana N20 Catalan style creme brulee, to put it simply. If you have not tried it, we cannot help here with words.
With a typical sobremesa discussing about desserts and life, the lecture + degustation part of the excursion finished.
-------
We concluded our Spanish excursion visiting the shop Fiesta LTD, in Central.
Shop staff Kitty welcomed us with a wonderful gift: a set of Christmas traditional Spanish dessert: turrón. Some of us brought a shopping list, just too bad the Manchego cheese was all gone (must be Christmas approaching). We will be back!
Fiesta is the number 1 distributors of Spanish food in Hong Kong, with over 25 years of experience. Now we know where all the secret ingredients of the Spanish chefs in HK come from!

Debra and Jorge Padilla, of the Irius Winery, Spain (Spanish Wine Group), discuss the unique and technologically modern winery designed by famed architect Frank Gehry (of Guggenheim, Bilbao fame), and how gravity played a big part in the design. They discuss how harvest in Spain is like a night disco with grapes, with music and parties until 3:00am. Jorge tell Debra about his favourite wine, the Irius, awarded 97 points by Robert Parker, a very original and unique white Pinot Noir, of which only 5000 bottle are made.
