CHAMPAGNE DAY – Epernay, France Champagne Tour
YAY! It’s champagne day!
Today, we splurged on an all-day champagne tour with France Bubbles Tour. We used this same tour company for a champagne tour in Reims, France during our honeymoon. But, this time we are touring Epernay, France!
Throughout the day, we stopped at three different champagne houses to taste many of their champagnes, learn about their history and explore their facilities & vineyards.
We also had the chance to stop in Hautvillers, which is a small, but charming town near Epernay. The Hautvillers Abbey is where Dom Perignon spent the majority of his time and it’s his burial place.
We had so much fun on this tour and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great experience in Epernay or Reims.
Enjoy the video and we’ll see you in our next one as we keep GOING PLACES!

Champagne Tasting in Epernay France - Charles Mignon
Let's taste some champagne in Épernay, France! We'll take the SNCF train from Paris Gare de l'Est to Gare d'Épernay. The trip takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes and then we'll have a 20 minute walk to Champagne Charles Mignon. We tour the cellars and then do a blind taste test to see who can tell the difference between champagne Rosé and the non-Rosé brut champagne. We had a wonderful time!

Why You Should Travel to Champagne, France and Do a Wine Tour
You can travel to the Champagne region in France on a train from Paris as a simple day trip and do some amazing wine tours of the Champagne Houses if you get up early and get after it!
We recommend training into Epernay, the capital of the Champagne region of France, and tour the Monet House, as well as a few others if you have time.
It's an aggressive itinerary for a single day trip, but it's possible, and in this travel video, you'll see us make it happen. The location of Epernay is only a couple hours via train from Paris, so don't think it isn't possible.
If you have time, we'd stay a couple nights though, there are so many things to do in Champagne.

To walk through our wine cellars in Epernay is to enter the very heart of Moët & Chandon. Located 10 to 30-meters under the chalky soil, Moët & Chandon’s cellars are the largest within the Champagne region, spanning 28km (aprox 17.4 miles). In this legendary subterranean labyrinth, the forces of nature have come together to create a uniquely ideal setting for the metamorphosis of choice fruit into the House’s luxurious wine. Select grapes undergo their transformation into champagne in conditions where temperature and humidity levels are constant and unchanging.
Regularly scheduled tours of the cellars followed by a tasting can be enjoyed throughout the season and bespoke tastings and tours can be arranged at your convenience
EPERNAY, FRANCE – Exploring the Capital of Champagne
During our honeymoon in 2015, we took a day trip from Paris to Reims, France for a champagne tour. We fell in love with this region and its tiny bubbles; so, we always said we’d come back to stay and play longer in the Champagne region of France.
Well, we finally made it back! Today, we explored the city of Epernay, France and took a stroll down memory lane, I mean, Champagne Avenue...
Throughout the day, we popped in a few famous champagne houses and tasted their champagnes. Along the way, we wandered through Epernay exploring the Champagne City.

We are here in the oldest gallery which was carved from the 1740s. And after this, there were 28 kilometers dug . Because of the various visits from Napoleon, this gallery is called Imperial. All of the 28 kilometers of caves were dug by hand.

And it is because of the friendship between Napoleon and Jean-Rmy Moet, that Moet & Chandon champagne get their name of Brut Imperial, Nectar Imperial, Rose Imperial, etc. It is a tribute to Napoleon.

14. SOUNDBITE: (French) Rgis Izard, Moet & Chandon Cellarman: (French): There are four stages to make champagne, the first one is hand made wine harvest, the second is assembling the non sparkling wines, the third is foam taking, the fourth is maturation which lasts about three years.

16. Various Thierry Gall, Moet & Chandon's cellarman riffling
17. SOUNDBITE: (French) Thierry Gall, Moet & Chandon Cellarman:
At Moet &Chandon, we have tens of millions of bottles stocked. My job is to give a stir to the bottles while they are on racks. Some bottles are problematic or have a deposit which is hard to stir. So a man's hand is needed to work those bottles. The riffling consists of making the deposit fall down the bottle neck so the bottle can be cleared.

20. SOUNDBITE: (French) Benoit Gouez, Moet & Chandon Cellar Master:
Here on the cork, you can see the yeast, which as formed, following sparkle capture and maturation. The bottle has been riffled, all the deposit has gone down to the cork and the aim is to open the bottle while expelling the yeast.

22. SOUNDBITE: (French) Benoit Gouez, Mot & Chandon Cellar Master:
There are great principles of balance, great principles for blending depending on the grapes origins, the types of wines, the vintage wines, but in fact each assemblage is adjusted each year so as to take into account the raw material we have at our disposal, as the latter varies each year. So there is a creative work process, whatever the vintage we create, and there is no secret formula, it is (rather) instinctive.

24. SOUNDBITE: (French) Benoit Gouez, Mot & Chandon Cellar Master:
There are three key elements during champagne tasting - the eye, the nose and the mouth.
