Wine on the Rhine: A German Wine Tasting in Mainz
Mainz, Germany -- the wine capital of the country tucked away firmly into the heart of Riesling country. Eighty percent of the city was left destroyed following over 30 air raids and the scars are still readily apparent in the dominant 1950s post-war architecture surrounding the rebuilt Altstadt or Old Town. Playing a significant role in the city's recovery and rebuilt reputation has been German wine. Traditionally overlooked by the French, whose border is just a couple of hours west of Mainz, German wine (and food) is making a name for itself thanks to passionate advocates looking to connect local delicacies with an already fiercely local culture. Jérôme Hainz and Christie Dietz of BottleStops share how they became enamored with German wine and food during an afternoon wine tasting tour through the shops and taverns of Mainz.

Bischöfliche Weingüter
BestWineRoutes.com visits Bischöfliche Weingüter.
The Bischöfliche Weingüter in Trier even go back to Roman times. Ever since they found official documents winery belongs to church which still is an important 'shareholder' of the domain. With the arrival of Anna Reiman and Karsten Weynand as Marketing Director and Director of the estate a new wind is blowing through the dark, long cellar corridors. The quality is still number one, but the wines are made more accessible for the current customers.
The portfolio is shown in a pyramid which is divided into dry, semi dry and fruity, yet so far not very innovative you might say, but with six quality layers this is already more of a step forward than there has ever been made. Especially in Germany, many wineries used to have a huge portfolio. It is common large domains easily have 100 wines to offer. It is a huge leap forward when this portfolio is reduced, making it so much easier to the consumer of today. Ultimately, the design of the labels is the key. The colour always indicates whether you have to do with a dry, semi dry or fruity wine and the label shows you the level of quality. The higher up the pyramid, the higher the quality. All wines are excellent, the entry level wines are no exception. Karsten did find an ancient print stone to print the labels around 1900. This stone was the inspiration for the current label.
Large cast iron spider
Enough about wine, after all the estate is also fun to visit, with long cellar corridors where no end seems to come to the wooden barrels, but also with several tasting areas and a treasure chamber for the special wines, which is guarded by a large cast iron spider. Would you like to have lunch or dinner you can find an excellent restaurant here, with a great terrace.
A visit to the vineyard is possible, but only on special request and with a group. The Bischöfliche Weingüter occasionally organize a great event in a unique location for tastings. A must to stop by if you go to the beautiful and ancient city of Trier are.

Mainzer Winzer - Best Of Wine Tourism-Award 2019
Weintourismus-Service
Wine tourism service
The association Die Mainzer Winzer e.V., is a regional association of 26 wineries in the city of Mainz. The common goal is to present the cultural heritage of wine in its numerous facets in an exciting way and to make it a real experience. This happens in the wineries themselves as well as in numerous events, such as the wine marathon, Best of Mainzer Wine, or the premium tasting. The most well-known wine meeting places of the Mainz winegrowers are probably the wine bar on the Rhine bank or the Mainzer market breakfast, which has meanwhile become a cult event, which inspires visitors across all age groups. The jury was also impressed by this strong wine tourism service and honored the initiative with the regional Best of Wine Tourism Award 2019 in this category.

Weingut Dätwyl - Best Of Wine Tourism Award 2018
Innovative Weintourismus-Erlebnisse
Innovative wine tourism experiences
Dätwyl Winery, Wintersheim
The Dätwyl winery is a classic example of a Rhine-Hessian foursided yard. In addition to a medieval living tower and defense tower, a romantic cow chapel and a large cellar vault, a day laborer's house from the 19th century exists there. After numerous construction measures it now serves as a guest room and holiday house. As an intentional contrast to the historic courtyard complex a modern wine-house was built as the new core of the winery for tastings and sale of in-house wines.
The winery has been awarded in the context of “barrier-free Rhineland-Palatinate”.Three guest rooms and the holiday house for up to 8 people make possible a restful wine experience. Topical wine tastings, enjoyment packages and guided tours or the participation in the grape harvest round off the innovative wine tourism package as a whole of the Dettweiler family.
