WINE-ing in the Okanagan: Must-see wineries
Why go to Napa or Napoli when we have a beautiful wine region right in our backyard!? A 4-hour roadtrip or a 1-hour flight and you’re surrounded by beautiful vineyards, lakes and impressive wines. The weather will almost always guarantee to impress. BC wines have been on the up and up and have been proving themselves in the world as having diversity. The unique environment of water, weather and sunlight have put BC wines, such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Rieslings on the map. We did all the hard work of driving around and tasting all the wine for you and these are our MUST-SEE wineries of the Okanagan. Check out our tour and where to stop in to sleep and eat.
Liquidity Wines
OK Falls
Liquidity isn’t only a winery, it’s an experience. From the changing artwork, to changing bistro menu that boasts fresh and simple food, to of course the wines (we can’t get enough of the Chardonnay!) and the incredible views of Skaha Lake. They will make you feel warm and welcome from the moment you walk through the glass doors. Check in to see Artist Lecture Series monthly.
Stoneboat Vineyards
Oliver
A truly family-run vineyard – from 15 acres to 50! The Martiniuk’s left the craziness of Vancouver and headed out east to open a winery (isn’t that everyone’s dream?) It was a good move, because the Black Sage Bench offers minerals in the ground, unlike any other area – which makes the wine unique and flavorful. Their Pinot Noir is definitely unlike any other and keeps us coming back for more.
Spirit Ridge at Nk’Mip Resort
Osoyoos
After a long day of travel and drinking wine, book a stay at Spirit Ridge - our very own desert right here in BC. Guest suites, vineyard, golf course, fine dining, spa, sparkling pools, it’s luxury at its finest. Nk’Mip Cellars not only has award-winning wines, it’s the FIRST Aboriginal-owned and operated winery. The spa is full-service and offers hot-stone massages (great after that long drive). Enjoy alfresco dinner at Mica, overlooking the desert and lake. Fresh, aboriginal-style cuisine is unique and delicious. Then bedtime in a comfy suite, cozied by a fireplace.
The Jammery
Kelowna
Start the day of right (bring your appetite) at the best breakfast spot in the Okanagan. The Jammery is world-renowned for their in-house made jams in all different flavors. We have a thing for the Amaretto Blueberry. After watching them make jams through the viewing window, sit down and get ready for some of the largest plates of waffles, eggs benny and sandwiches you’ve ever seen!
50th Parallel
Lake Country
International award-winning wines, bumping music and fun vibes, this is #1 on our list of best wineries and soon-to-be destination resort. Run by a power-couple who slaved over the land themselves to build what has become one of the Okanagan’s most impressive spots from the architecture and views, to the vineyards and the hospitality. They offer tours of the property and education of their processes, that end with a tasting that will blow your mind.
8th Generation
Summerland
Passed down through 8 generations of Schales’ boys (hence the name). The first Schales grape was planted in 1783 – that’s some experience unlike anyone else! They have one of the oldest tasting rooms in the Okanagan that’s a restored farmhouse from the 1940's. It's also one of the only wine shops that ACTUALLY faces the vineyard, which means breath taking views while you sip on their crisp and clean wines.
Our fav: INTEGRITY (but you should try them all)
Dirty Laundry
Summerland
The only thing better than Dirty Laundry’s Bordello wine (which is virtually impossible to beat), is the story that it actually WAS a bordello. The story goes that a immigrant worker named Sam, quit his job and opened a laundromat. He realized soon after that his customers had needs for other things, like drinks and gambling .and women. Dirty (upstairs) Laundry (downstairs) was born. The original location still stands and they play up on the story, but now surrounded by beautiful vineyards and makes delicious, award-winning wines, making it one of the most fun wineries ever. You can order a picnic and sit on the patio and watch the steam engine go by.

Nk'Mip Cellars - Osoyoos
In this video, we talk to Canada's first native winemaker Justin Hall about his dedication to Nk'Mip Cellars in Osoyoos, British Columbia. The winery is located within the Spirit Ridge Resort in the town of Osoyoos, British Columbia. The winery was conceived of and is owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band, of which Hall is an elder. In the course of our visit with Hall, we talked about garrigue, a French term that is used to describe a flavour in wine that is attributed to the fragrant plants growing in that country. Anthony Gismondi identified a similar but unique herbaceous flavour in the South Okanagan wines and he asked Hall if there might be a word similar to garrigue in the Okanagan language of his band. Hall said he would ask some of the elders, who immediately came back with a term we've used as the title for this film. Hall says the word in the intro as well as the definition. Hall has trained under head winemaker Randy Picton and now heads the white winemaking for Nk'Mip.

Canadian Vineyards and Wines
While visiting the Okanagan this past week I thought I'd put together a video about the wine industry in our country: what goes into a healthy vine, what makes ice wine so special, and why grafting is so important in North America. The video clips were taken at wineries from Osoyoos to Naramata and the happy pooch at the end in Ali from Desert Hill Winery.

Dirty Laundry Vineyard - Summerland, British Columbia
Above Okanagan Lake and the original Summerland town site, you will find one of the most interesting and beautiful wineries in all of British Columbia. With the historic Kettle Valley Steam Railroad chugging through the vineyard coupled with lake & mountain vistas, our visitor
experience is rivaled only by the quality of our award-winning wines.
Dirty Laundry Vineyard is situated on a sun-drenched plateau that enjoys an ideal micro-climate for growing exceptional grapes and has some of the oldest vinifera vines in the Okanagan Valley. From these grapes we’ve created wines that are being recognized throughout Canada and the world. We’ve earned medals and accolades in San Francisco, London & the Pacific Rim including “Best of Varietal” awards for both our whites and reds.
Our location’s unique history as a turn of the century Chinese laundry and brothel is key to our cheeky adult theme and the locals rate us as the #1 wine tasting destination in the South Okanagan two years running. Dirty Laundry is definitely a “must see” winery destination in the Okanagan Valley.

Canada is not too cold for wine
This is the first of three short videos in our Inniskillin Icewine Series, filmed this past winter. Episodes two is Harvest and Episode three is Cooking with Icewine, be sure to check them out for the complete story.
In the early 70s, wine made in Canada was typically identified as jug wine with little attention paid to traditional winemaking standards. Many believed that growing vinifera grape varieties, a staple of the European wine world wasn't possible in Ontario, with its long and cold winters. Austrian immigrant and winemaker Karl Kaiser began experimenting and created wines that he shared with nursery owner Donald Ziraldo. Ziraldo couldn't believe what he was tasting and the two men combined their talents and changed the trajectory of the wine industry in Canada.
The partners created Inniskillin and were awarded the first winery license in the region since prohibition. Kaiser felt that Canada could grow a version of German Eiswein, which he encountered in his native Austria.
With great determination and through trial and error, Inniskillin produced its first icewine in 1984. Just seven years later, in 1991, their 1989 vintage gave the winery and Canada international recognition and drew astonishment by winning the top prize at VinExpo in France, the epicentre of wine at the time. Canada was not too cold for fine wine after all.
In our latest GOW Short Series on Inniskillin and icewine, writer/wine critic Anthony Gismondi interviews Del Rollo of Inniskillin's parent company Arterra, Bruce Nicholson, Inniskillin's winemaker and Gerald Klose, son of a local Niagara farming family who went on to become the director of viticulture at Inniskillin and the guru of icewine farming.
