What makes Okanagan Valley terroir and wines unique: David Scholefield interview, Okanagan Crush Pad
In this candid interview for Okanagan Crush Pad co-founder David Scholefield discusses what makes Okanagan Valley unique in the world and why its natural acidity is the envy of the wine world. He discusses terroir, light and nature with Amanda Barnes from their new, pioneering vineyard.

Transcript for the hearing impaired:
What is distinctive about Okanagan wine? What is the character that contributes...
We used to have a terrible inferiority complex about being so far north. California is the land of milk and honey and it is south and they have palm trees and we don’t… but now we realise actually, with or without climate change (and of course it is very much with climate change) that there is something special about growing here, from the point of view of the grapes. Plants crave light, and the farther north you go the longer the days are. So, something that is unique about this place is that we have very, very long hours of daylight, three and a half hours more than in California in the peak of the growing season. That is very, very interesting. So, what we get is we get wines with very precise, very clear flavours, but wines that are very light, and fresh and juicy. Our wines our built on fresh, natural acid, and really that is the envy of a lot of regions in the world. It is easy to get sugars and alcohol, but we get this natural juicy freshness which we think is kind of special.
Excellent. And it is 6.30pm, when you talked about light, it is 6.30pm now and we still have a couple hours of light left here!
Oh, for sure.
This vineyard that we are in is a very special one for the project. Because this is not only the highest altitude vineyard in Canada, and possibly North America, but it is also pushing Okanagan Valley to further extremes... Can you explain a bit about the limits that we have here?
Well, first of all. We're... In the Okanagan we are far north to begin with, we are 50 degrees north in latitude. The pioneers here always said that grape growing is absolutely impossible where the vines couldn't see the lake, and here there is no bloody lake! So the immediate assumption is that everything will freeze solid in the winter. But, not quite! And that's a really interesting thing. Even as we are standing here you can feel this slight breeze. And all day, every day, there's air moving here. And that happens very importantly in the winter. When warm air from the lake comes up over the mountain here and then washes down over the vineyard, and so far nothing has frozen. And that's this very subtle, very delicate thing of this, it is the movement of air from one end of the valley to the other. And its, what Alan York always used to say: Wine is about shit you can't see!
Gold Mine and Wine Tours: Thompson Okanagan, British Columbia
Explore a gold mine and taste wine of the Similkameen Valley in the Thompson Okanagan Region with Tourism British Columbia Field Reporter Chris Wheeler. Perched on a cliff face in Hedley, BC, the Mascot Gold Mine is a place to experience what life was like as a hard rock gold miner. Chris then travels further into the beautiful Similkameen Valley to Cawston, BC and samples wines at both the Crowsnest Vineyards and the Seven Stones Winery. Talk about the good life!
Bench 1775 - Naramata Bench
The 20 km-long Naramata Bench begins at Penticton, British Columbia, and runs north, on the east side, above Okanagan Lake. The narrow strip of precious vineland sits in the center of B.C.'s largest wine region, the Okanagan Valley. The many wineries and vineyards that occupy the bench have been founded by a patchwork of people from different economic backgrounds, countries and levels of expertise in winegrowing. In the beginning, many settled and planted what they loved to drink and the forgiving site meant that, surprisingly, many thrived.
Valeria Tait is the General Manager, winemaker and viticulturist of the six-year-old Bench 1775 winery, located almost at the half-way mark of the Bench. She comments on why this variety can exist and on the evolution of winegrowing there from her perspective as a 27-year veteran of working in vineyards throughout Okanagan Valley. We learn a bit more about being a new winery and her approach to running a winery.
While Anthony Gismondi interviews Tait in this video, you'll enjoy the stunning views from their patio and glimpse at the laid-back lifestyle of the Okanagan Valley. You'll want to see the final shot.

Okanagan Valley Wine Tasting Tour - 2013 October
Wine tasting in the Okanagan Valley region of BC Canada is a must do activity in the fall. This year Karen & I travelled with Bill and Sandra Owens, Wayne and Sandra Sinclair into the heart of wine country to enjoy several estate wines. It took us three days to cover parts of Bottle Neck Drive near Summerland, the estate wineries along the Naramata Bench close to Penticton, then south onto Eastside rd. along Skaha Lake. The wineries were super easy to find. Staff especially friendly this time of year. However we encountered only one hick up at Black Widow Winery. Their staff were not at their best. The wine server was unfriendly and not very helpful. Not recommended by us to go there again. Now we know why the Okanagan Valley is known as a true Travel Destination. Here is a list of the wineries that we visited, Dirty Laundry wines, Heaven's Gate Estate Winery, Sonora, Saxon Estate winery, Sumac Wines, Therapy Vineyards,Tinhorn Creek Vineyards, Blasted Church Winery, See Ya Later Vineyard, Jackson Triggs. All these wineries have the VQA designation and have interesting Wine Tasting rooms. Join us for our Okanagan Valley Wine Tasting Tour.
Wine Tour in Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley Wine Region
Our visit to Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley wine region.
We left Whistler and made the 8 hour drive to Kelowna. We stayed with family and our daily goal was to explore Kelowna and the Okanagan, taste wines, tour wineries and eat delicious oknagan fresh fruit.
The Okanagan produces 80% of British Columbias wine. There are over 182 licensed wineries with the majority of them situated along the Okanagan lake. Wine has been produced in Kelowna and the Okanagan since the 1850’s. Unfortunately in the early days prohibition had wiped out most of Kelowna’s wineries and it wasn’t until the 1930’s when the wine industry in Kelowna and the Okanagan was revitalized.
There are over 60 different types of grapes that are grown in the Okanagan including, merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, cabernet franc and much more.
We visited Rollingdale Winery, Tantalus Winery, Vibrant Vines, Frequency Winery, Arrow Leaf Winery, Summerhill Pyramid Winery and Ex Nihilo Winery. These wineries are located in various locations throughout Kelowna and you would likely want to limit yourself to 3-4 wineries per day. Please take a taxi or have a designated driver.
We highly recommend taking a trip down to Kelowna and doing a wine tour, it's a ton of fun and very close to Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.
