Organic wine behind the scenes in Vouvray, France
Organic wine has become increasingly popular in recent years but do you know how it's made? What makes wine organic, what's the process like, and why is it worth your while? I wanted to know more so I spent the day in the Vouvray appellation with Peter Hahn of Le Clos de la Meslerie and learned all about his unique approach to winemaking... which includes working the vines with a horse instead of a tractor!
A huge thanks goes out to Peter and Philippe for being generous with their time and to Cathy of Le Tasting Room for helping me organize the day.

Understanding Loire Valley Vouvray with Noel Pinguet
Ready for a course in Applied Biodynamics from the Rudolph Steiner School? Noel Pinguet of Domaine Huet introduces us to the quasi-mystical philosophy that led him to experiment with a scientific mode of culture—a field where he is a real pioneer.
In the land of Chenin Blanc, through sparkling Vouvray we find the concept of verticality and minerality in wine, learn the meaning of the words ‘Sec’, ‘Demi-Sec’ and ‘Moelleux’ or ‘Sweet’.
We also hear some strong opinions: « chaptalization is cheating! » « Aging wine is not making wine! » « A Vouvray ‘moelleux’ from raisining is more elegant than botrytised Sauternes! »
Noel Pinget is truly ‘not-be-missed’... the creator of a wine that has made Robert Parker cry ...
Topics covered in this episode:
- Biodynamic treatment of the Rudolph Steiner School is complicated!
- Wine tasting courses
- Sparkling wine—not Champagne—but what flavor!
- Explanation of the terms 'dry', 'semi-dry' and 'moelleux'.
- Chenin blanc in Vouvray and Chenin blanc from South Africa—any differences?
- Definition of verticality in wine.
- Is chaptalization cheating?
- Wine that has make Robert Parker cry…
- Raisinging: more elegant than Botrytis?
- Difference between a ‘Moelleux’ Vouvray and a Sauternes.

BOW ep158 - Famille Bougrier Vouvray 'V' 2018
Produced just east of Tours in France's Loire Valley by the Bougrier family, this off-dry wine makes use of the Chenin Blanc grape which thrives in the area. It features tangy, balanced acidity and some lovely fruit, including pear, quince and honeydew melon. It's simple, it's classic, it's gorgeous. Works well with pork, creamy cheeses and oriental cuisine!

How much do you know about Loire Valley wine? Let's talk to a French wine expert
Wine aficionados, this one is for you! I drove out to Tours, France, to meet with longtime friend Cathy Henton of Le Tasting Room. She runs a top-notch Loire Valley wine tour business with her husband Nigel out of their home and I was their guest for the day. We talked about what you can expect on a Le Tasting Room tour, some wine basics, what organic wine making is all about, sulfites, and more. It's an easy 55-minute day trip from Paris.
As I mentioned in the video, I have no affiliation with Le Tasting Room. I took a wine tour with them back in 2010 and it was so fantastic that I still rave about it today and have stayed in touch with Cathy and Nigel ever since. There's nothing pretentious about how they conduct their tours. Even if you don't know much about wine, you'll be at ease, so don't feel intimidated. You'll learn all about wine, have a wonderful lunch in their home, and then go out to meet the producers and taste the wines.
If you inquire about a tour, let them know you saw my video! I want to see if my video sends any clients their way. ;-)
