1855 Classification Bordeaux Wine ???? How, Why, What Now?
Top 5 Interesting and important Facts to Know about the 1855 Classification Bordeaux wine History.

Understand the context of this historic classification of some of the finest wines in France.
1- The 1855 classification wasn’t the first one to classify or rank the wines of Bordeaux.
Thomas Jefferson (third president of the USA, 1801–1809) during a visit to the Bordeaux region in 1787 before he was elected, came up with his own list of the best claret wines at the time.
2- The creation of the 1855 Classification – Why and how?
Essentially, Napoleon III, emperor and ruler of France at the time, wanted to showcase the best wines from Bordeaux at the Exposition Universelle de Paris of 1855, or Universal Exhibition, the event we now know as the World’s Fair
So, he asked the Chamber of Commerce of the Bordeaux region, who in turn asked the negociants (la place de Bordeaux, a circle of brokers trading the wines from top Bordeaux wineries), or the
3- The levels: by price
The final rankings for the 1855 Bordeaux Classification are organized mainly by price of the wines during the 19th century.
61 Chateaus were classified:
5 Premiers Crus (First Growth)
14 Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growth)
14 Troisièmes Crus (Third Growth)
10 Quatrièmes Crus (Fourth Growth)
18 Cinquièmes Crus (Fifth Growth)
4- The changes since:
1856. Chateau Cantemerle was included as a Fifth Growth simply because somehow the trade had omitted (or forgotten!?) to include it in the original version.
The second change was about a Third Growth estate of Margaux, Chateau Dubignon, which was merged with Chateau Malescot St. Exupery in the 1870’s.
Then of course the most striking change took place in 1973, when Chateau Mouton-Rothschild was elevated to the coveted rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé, the highest ranking level.
5- Why Bordeaux right bank where not included?
What does the 1855 mean today?
Considering what the 1855 classification means for today’s wines and the wine industry in the 21st century.

Chateau Lascombes' Wines (subtitles) - Bordeaux - Millesima
Millésima presents chateau Cos d'Estournel (Saint-Estephe).
Discover the château's offers on:
Château Lascombes, Second Cru Classé (second-ranked French vineyard) in 1855, is one of the most extensive vineyards in the Medoc. This Margaux Cru Classé (classified superior quality wine estate) consisting of 118 hectares, 112 of which are vineyards, was able to build a great reputation from its early years. It was in 1625 that the property started gaining distinction under the Knight of Lascombes. For centuries the château and its vineyard would take a place among the ranks of chateaus that contributed to the Medoc reputation: a reputation that would become definitive when Colony Capital, an American pension fund, acquired it in April, 2001. In addition, it was during this period that the owners started significant restoration (renewal of the vineyard, more appropriate adaptation of the grape varieties to each soil, change in the layout of the fermentation cellar to a complete gravity-flow system and enlargement of the wine storehouse) without ever forgetting that modernity should serve the great Médoc tradition.
Dominique Befve and his teams are dedicated to always making house wines with more elegance, finesse and character, vintage after vintage. Moreover Château Lascombes and Chevalier de Lascombes (the second wine) are characterised by warmth, freshness, a fruity flavour and smoothness while embracing the powerful character that the most distinguished Margaux appellation lands are capable of producing.
In March 2011 the American group decided to sell the property and MACSF (the French physicians’ mutual insurance company) offered to buy it and set new aspirations for the Cru Classé.

Château d'Arsac - 2014 - Margaux Cru Bourgeois
Château d'Arsac - 2014 - Margaux Cru Bourgeois tasted 100% blind by the Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
Medium deep ruby red colour. The nose blends red fruit, plum and some herbal spices with discreet wood. The palate has classic medium weight with soft red fruit, a slight tannic backbone starting to open up, fresh and well balanced in a classic style that should benefit from further ageing.
