Central Florida Roadtrip: Winter Garden
The Season 2 premiere of Central Florida Road Trip pays a visit to West Orange County and the city of Winter Garden. In the 1920s the fishing on Lake Apopka helped turn the city into a tourist hotbed. We’ll tell you what Winter Garden invention helped transform the farming industry as well as how the refurbished Edgewater Hotel, the Garden Theater and the West Orange Trail helped revive the city.
Rail Road Puts Winter Garden on the MAP!
Returned to Winter Garden recently after living there over 30-years ago, and boy did it look different! What was once a sleepy southern citrus community, is now a vibrant community! I could have spent longer roaming around, bit the clock said we needed to be elsewhere. Winter Garden, I will return again!

About Winter Garden
This charming little city grew up around Florida’s agricultural industry and retains its quaint, welcoming hometown atmosphere. Initially settled in the 1850s, Winter Garden grew rapidly with the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s. A thriving commercial district emerged around the turn of the 20th century. Many of the buildings from the town’s boom period have been preserved and restored in Winter Garden’s historic downtown district. Ranked by Forbest.com as one of America’s fastest growing suburbs, Winter Garden offers a vibrant mix of culture, history, recreation and entertainment. Highlights include a number of municipal and state parks, museums and the historic West Orange Trail, a walking, biking, hiking and equestrian system that runs through the heart of downtown Winter Garden.

Saving Dreamland
The Henry Nehrling Society, Inc. was established in 1999 by a group of concerned citizens to preserve Dr. Nehrling's home and horticultural legacy. In 2000, the Society incorporated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charitable organization. The Society's first accomplishment was having Palm Cottage Gardens placed on the National Register of Historic Places in November 2000. Since then the Society has focused on educating the public about Dr. Nehrling's importance to the horticultural history of Florida. In November 2009, the Society acquired the home and gardens to accomplish its purpose as stated below.
The Mission of the Henry Nehrling Society is to preserve Dr. Nehrling's historic home and gardens in Gotha, Florida, and provide a History and Horticultural Education Center focusing on environmental conservation and to:
* Honor Dr. Nehrling's horticultural and ornithological achievements.
* Preserve the remaining historical home and gardens in Gotha, Florida.
* Recognize the community's historical and German-American cultural heritage.
* Teach environmentally sound gardening and landscaping practices through horticultural classes and demonstration gardens; provide education for wetlands restoration and conservation.
* Assist in the conservation and protection of natural resources in Central Florida.

Constitution Park is one of the best parks in the area. It has so much to offer for kids of all ages. Here, you will find two separate playgrounds: for the littlest ones and for bigger kids. This park is full of activities like swings, a running track, outdoor exercise equipment, a putting green, basketball courts, a roofed pavilion for parties, and lots of open space.
Come here for the Tequesta Green Market held every 3rd Saturday of the month from 9 am to 2 pm, where you can buy fresh, locally grown, and organic produce, seafood, breads, veggies, fruits, and even clothing and artwork. Occasionally, there are movies at dusk, concerts and food truck pow wows.

Flagler Museum, also known as Whitehall, is a 55-room mansion open to the public in Palm Beach, Florida in the United States. The building is listed[4] on the National Register of Historic Places.
Henry Flagler, one of the founders of Standard Oil, built Whitehall for his third wife, Mary Lily Kenan.
The site of the home was purchased for $50,000 in 1893 (as of 2010 that would be $1,197,562.39) by Flagler; later surveyed for construction in July 1900 and the home completed in time for Flagler and his wife to move in on February 6, 1902.[5] The architects were Carrère and Hastings, who had earlier designed the Ponce de Leon Hotel and several other buildings in St. Augustine for Flagler. Whitehall was to be a winter residence, and Henry gave it to Mary Lily as a wedding present. They would travel to Palm Beach each year in one of their own private railcars, one of which was No. 91.

Driving through Fort Meade, Florida on US 17
Fort Meade is the oldest city in Polk County, dating its origins to 1849 when it was an old military road from Tampa (Fort Brooke) to Fort Pierce during the Indian wars. The 1880s business district was located on old Wire Street (now Broadway), which was a casualty of 4 devastating fires. Today, there are over 150 which are designated as landmarks.[4] In the 1890s the Fort Meade Street Railway operated a horse-drawn service in the town.
The earliest known burial is John I. Hooker (1821–1862) located in the town's Evergreen Cemetery. Fort Meade's Christ Church (Episcopal) located at 526 North Oak was built in 1889. It is a frame vernacular with Gothic Revival elements and was designed by architect J. H. Weddell. A minister by the name of C.E Butler had committed suicide at the church in 1894. Located next to Christ Church is the famous Rev. Wm James Reid House. Located within the historic district, the house was used for the HBO motion picture The Judgement featuring Blythe Danner, Keith Carradine and Jack Warden (1990).
Future Confederate General Stonewall Jackson was stationed at the fort in 1851. The town was burned by Union forces in 1864[5] and all of the original structures were destroyed, except the 2nd fort which was dismantled in the 1890s. Fort Meade has over 300 homes on the National Register of Historic Places and a handful that date to the late 1800s.
