Day at Winter Park, Florida
Day at Winter Park, Florida. September 13, 2018.
Winter Park is a city near Orlando, Florida. The population was 27,852 at the 2010 United States Census. Winter Park was founded as a resort community by northern business magnates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its main street includes civic buildings, retail, art galleries, a private liberal arts college (Rollins College), museums, a park, a train station, a golf course country club, a historic cemetery, and a beach and boat launch. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art showcases glass art by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Overlooking Lake Osceola, the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens displays works by the notable Czech-American artist. By Lake Virginia, Cornell Fine Arts Museum shows antiquities and contemporary works.
Lazy boat rides, craft cocktails and a diverse range of galleries are abundant in this manicured town of eight square miles, which manages to make even the Amtrak train seem quaint, stopping as it does in the middle of the town's mini-Central Park.
Florida Series Episode 5: Winter Park Museum Day
Every month, I'll be visiting a different city in Florida I've either never been to before or one I'm not super familiar with. This month I went to one I have visited quite a few times but experienced new to me museums!
I think it's great to step out of theme park world sometimes and explore neighborhood cities to Orlando like Winter Park. Most of these museums are free or a small fee which makes it easy to see so much in one day! Leave a comment down below with something you liked from the musuems and don't forget to hit the like button! See you next month for another episode of my Florida Series!

My Journey Contest- Best Kept Secret- Winter Park, Florida
Winter Park is one of Florida's Best Kept Secrets. It is just past downtown, Orlando. There are so many options for a fun-filled day in Winter Park! The scenic boat tour, Peterbrooke Chocolatier, picturesque sites, museums, dining options and shopping are just a few of the highlights of Park Avenue, the central hub of Winter Park! If you are looking for a place to escape to and unwind, you should DEFINITELY check out Winter Park! It's one of my favorite places to visit.

Karrie and I took a drive into town and we find this nice park next to the Amtrak station and decided to take flight.
Visiting Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Orlando
The Orlando area in Florida has a lot to offer, and even though the area is of course mostly known and related to both Disney parks and Universal, that, by no means imply, those are the only interesting activities to do in the area, as there are hundreds of attractions. So much so that it would take you months to visit each and every one. In our last trip to Orlando, we skipped the parks and went to the cultural attractions, and were pleasantly surprised by Winter Park, which is a lovely area to spend the day while enjoying the outdoors, the lake and a nice warm walk. But also, set aside a couple of hours to visit the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, featuring the biggest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany´s works.
The Morse Museum houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933), including the artist and designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, art glass, leaded-glass lamps and windows; his chapel interior from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago; and art and architectural objects from his Long Island country estate, Laurelton Hall. The Museum’s holdings also include American art pottery, late 19th- and early 20th-century American painting, graphics, decorative art.

Winter Park enjoys more park space per capita than any other city in Florida. Winter Park was founded as a resort destination by wealthy New England Industrialists before the turn of the 20th century. It is recognized as the first centrally planned community in Florida; its main street includes not only public civic buildings and retail, but also art galleries, a private liberal arts college, museums, a park, a train station, a golf course country club, a historic cemetery, and a beach and boat launch. Winter Park is celebrated for a sense of place and history, uncommon to many parts of Central Florida. Many structures are more than 100 years old. The scenic olde Winter Park area is punctuated by small, winding brick streets, and a canopy of old Southern Live Oak and Camphor trees, draped with Spanish Moss. The city draws thousands of visitors to annual festivals including the Bach Festival, the nationally ranked Sidewalk Art Festival, and the Winter Park Concours d'Elegance.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center on The Rest of Orlando
The Hannibal Square Heritage Center represents a first-of-a-kind experience in Central Florida where the history of a community is told by members of the community itself through The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park, The Hannibal Square Timeline, which chronicles significant local and national events in civil rights and African-American history, and public art installations and educational programs that explore the African-American experience, southern folklore and cultural preservation. The center also features a Visiting Exhibition Series. The exhibitions and programs held at the center weave the stories of this unique and proud neighborhood together with African-American history and experience in general.
The Haunting of the Maitland Art Center in Orlando, Florida
The Maitland Art Center was founded as an art colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, André Smith (1880-1959). Smith is believed to be haunting the Art Center to this day. I spoke with Andrea Bailey Cox, Executive Director for Art & History Museums – Maitland / Maitland Art Center, about the hauntings, including her personal sighting.
This interview was done for my 2014 Halloween Huffington Post blog:
