Holyoke Massachusetts (MA) Real Estate Tour
Tour Holyoke, MA neighborhoods, condominium developments, subdivisions, schools, landmarks, recreational areas, and town offices.
Holyoke, Massachusetts is located along the Connecticut River, where the first of several dams was constructed in 1848 to take advantage of a 57-foot drop in the water level. The water power created by the dam was transferred to new industrial sites along 7.5 miles of hand dug canals.
At one point, more than 25 paper mills were in operation in Holyoke, annually producing the greatest tonnage of paper of any city in the world. Although only one company continues to manufacture paper, the dam, canals and much of the industrial and commercial architecture remain intact. Owing to the city's excellent location at the junction of Routes I-90 and I-91, the reuse of many buildings has proved to be economically feasible.
The game of volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan at the Holyoke YMCA and the city is rightly claimed to be the Birthplace of Volleyball. Recreational attractions include the Volleyball Hall of Fame, the Wistariahurst Museum, the Children's Museum, and Holyoke Heritage State Park, where the former Mt. Park Merry-Go-Round is permanently housed. The State Park also hosts Celebrate Holyoke, an annual three-day event which brings visitors from around the region to enjoy nationally known performers. The Eyrie House Ruins in the Mount Tom Reservation in Massachusetts.
Owned and operated by one William Street and opened in 1861, the hotel included a picnic area, a croquet field, and masterful views of the winding Connecticut River and surrounding Mt. Tom mountain range. The hotel was at its peak in the 1880s, when it was patronized by several hundred travelers a day, who came from far and wide for both scenic picnics and fine dining in the Eyrie House’s elegant restaurant.
Unfortunately for Street, there were many jostling players in the hospitality game. Competition with the Prospect House atop Mt. Holyoke and the nearby Mt. Tom Summit House and Railway Park led to his own property’s decline over time. In 1893, Street began construction of a new hotel to replace the deteriorating Eyrie House. But instead of two hotels, he ended up with none.
The Eyrie House burned to the ground on the night of April 13th, 1901. Alone on the mountain that evening, Street had started a funeral pyre for two deceased horses. Before he knew it, the entire mountaintop was in flames. When the blaze finally died down, only the cellar holes and the walls of the building’s stone understory remained.
The frugal Street was underinsured and left unable to either reconstruct his old hotel or continue building his new one. Defeated, he lived out the rest of his life as a recluse. When the state of Massachusetts incorporated the Eyrie Hotel ruins into the new Mt. Tom Reservation, a $5000 check was deposited in Street’s bank account as a gesture of goodwill. However, Street’s frugality was matched only by his pride. He died having never touched the money.

“The class of 2015 honors a diverse group of legendary players amassing 16 Olympic Games appearances among the four individuals and a coach who led his team to an Olympic silver medal,” said George Mulry, executive director of the Volleyball Hall of Fame. “These remarkable individuals have brought distinction to the sport over a number of years and we are humbled to honor them here in the birthplace of volleyball.”
