Witch Hat Water Tower 100 year Annivesary July 13th. 2014
Witch Mountain as I knew it when I moved to Minneapolis, I had never heard the nicknames of Witch Hat Tower, Witch's Tower, The Angle or Tower Hill. The only Tower Hill I knew was along Lake Michigan on the white sand beach of the Indiana Dunes State Park. Witch Hat Tower was designed by Frederick William Cappelen. a Norwegian-born architect and civil engineer who held the office of Minneapolis City Engineer. the Prospect Park Water Tower has elicited mystery for nearly a century.
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Witch's Hat Water Tower to supply water to southeast Minneapolis. Witch's Hat Water Tower, construction started in 1913 and was completed in the summer of 1914, It is Minneapolis highest point and a placard denotes the highest elevation at 951 feet (289.86 m). The Water Tower hasn't been open to the public since 1928. When the tower had a caretaker. The 110-foot tower was constructed in 1914 to be able to supply water to the growing manufacturing companies. It's capable of holding about 150,000 gallons Because the Prospect Park area had low water pressure. What was its second purpose? Prospect Park Water Tower was also built to be a bandstand; however, there was only one concert in the band shell because the musicians experienced difficulty in carrying their instruments up the inside spiral staircase. The Witch's Hat Water Tower is rumored to be the inspiration for Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower, as the tower was clearly visible from Dylan's home in nearby Dinkytown. But, the Truth is it was writen at the Holiday Inn In Duluth, Minnesota as he was staying there and looking out the window of his room at the Watch Tower which occurs on the Friday evening after Memorial Day Weekend on the hill. Ater he put it out Jimi Hendrix took it from there. It was used for a Water Tower until 1952. In 1955 the tower was hit by lightning and sustained substantial roof damage. The city subsequently scheduled it for demolition. The neighborhood appealed to the city's Department of Public Works to preserve it. Damaged roof tiles were replaced with copper tiles. In 1986 the tower underwent a lot of renovation for its preservation. Restoration of the base was performed as part of the process to list the Tower on the National Register of Historic places in 1997-99. Another tower had previously stood on the hill, probably in the years 1825 to 1870, as a military sentry tower whose purpose had been to control the caravans of oxcarts that formed by the river crossing at St. Anthony Falls and traveled east on Territorial Road to St. Paul. The structure is located south of University Avenue Southeast between Malcolm and Clarence Avenues Southeast. The Bull Tractor Company was in the area in 1914 to make their patented engines which would run on kerosene as well as gasoline. The company changed their name from Bull to Toro. The Witch Hat Water Tower is only open one day a year during the Annual Ice Cream Social which occurs on the Friday evening after Memorial Day Weekend, By the Prospect Park East River Road neighborhood's The neighborhood association, PPERRIA, founded in 1901, is the oldest neighborhood association in the city of Minneapolis.
