British Army Saxon APCs at Witham Auction 2012 - 2014
The Saxon is an armoured personnel carrier used by the British Army and supplied in small numbers to various overseas organisations. It was developed by GKN Sankey from earlier projects, AT 100 IS and AT104, and was due to be replaced by the Future Rapid Effect System. It was first produced by Alvis plc.
The Saxon was intended to act as a cheap but efficient battle-taxi for units that would have to make long journeys from the UK to reinforce the British Army of the Rhine. It was made as a relatively low cost armoured personnel carrier based on a revised Bedford M series 4x4 truck chassis and other commercially available components. As a lightly armoured wheeled vehicle, it is much faster - especially on roads - and easier to maintain than a tracked vehicle. Indeed, it shares many parts with commercial trucks, reducing the operating cost. It is armoured against small-arms fire and shell splinters, but is not intended to stand up to any anti-vehicle weaponry. The vehicle has a single machine gun for local air defence.
The Saxon's hull is welded steel with a V-shaped under-chassis plate to deflect mine detonations. Seating is provided in the rear for up to ten troops, although eight is a more comfortable load if all their equipment is included. There is an equipment stowage area on the hull roof.
Some Saxon IS, or Saxon Patrol, vehicles were acquired for service in Northern Ireland, serving as ambulances or troop carriers, which had extendible wings that could be used as protective shields during a riot. Compared to the standard model, these have various minor modifications intended for internal security operations, such as searchlights and wire cutters
The first operational Saxons were deployed in Germany in 1983, to equip mechanised infantry battalions. The Saxon has now been withdrawn from service in HM Armed Forces, but 147 were kept in storage. The Saxon has been deployed to places such as Bahrain, Brunei, Bosnia, Malaysia, Oman, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Seven Saxons were ordered by the Royal Hong Kong Police from GKN Sankey in 1987 and delivered in 1988 where they replaced 15 Saracens. They were assigned to the Police Tactical Unit and remained there until withdrawn in 2009
75 Saxons were sold to Ukraine reportedly under a contract made in 2013, i.e. predating the start of the War in Donbass. The Ukraine military announced the deal on 5 December 2014. The former chief commander of British land forces, General Sir Richard Dannatt, said that supplying the vehicles to Ukraine was immoral as they were useless in the type of high intensity warfare they were being deployed in.

Brainwave Children's Charity exists to help children with disabilities and additional needs to achieve greater independence by aiming to improve mobility, communication skills and learning potential through a range of educational and physical therapies. The children we work with have a range of conditions including: autism, brain injuries such as cerebral palsy and genetic disorders such as Down's syndrome.
A key success of Brainwave has been our ability to recognise the impact having a child with additional needs has on their family and empowering them to deliver therapy to their child at home, as we believe the family home is where the children respond best, with the people whose love and care is unparalleled.

The Secrets of the Witham Shield
In the early 19th century, a striking Celtic treasure was dredged-up from a river in Lincolnshire: The Witham Shield.
British Museum curator Julia Farley talks about one of her favourite objects in the museum’s collection — a highly decorative shield named after the river in which it was found. At over 2,000 years old, the shield was a remarkable find, but Farley posits that it was also exceptional in its time.
She encourages us to take a closer look at the shield to see some of its surreptitious and beastly little secrets. Through teaching our eyes to see the subtly encoded messages in such objects one gains insight into Britain’s Celtic past, and how this visual language persists through the ages. Farley shows us how this is not just a decorative art, but a powerful art.

R.A.F. WWII Rivenhall Airfield
Recorded on Super 8 in 2006. The place has now totally been overtaken by a quarry. The Officers building is a walk back through time as it still has names on the doors from the second world war. This airfield was in use by the U.S.A.A.F. (363rd Fighter group with Mustangs) (397th Bombardment group) with B26 Marauders and the R.A.F. 38 squadron and Glider Pilot Regiment for the Allied invasion. It was opened in 1942, closed in 1946 and kept in reserve until 1956.

Priti Patel looks sombre at Remembrance Sunday parade after quitting Cabinet
PRITI Patel cut a more sombre figure as she marked Remembrance Day in her constituency three days after quitting the cabinet. The former international development secretary quit amid a scandal over secret meetings with senior Israelis. She was first seen in public yesterday at an Armistice Day service in her constituency in Witham, Essex, where she smiled in front of the cameras and told reporters she had been overwhelmed with support. But the Tory politician appeared more subdued today as she attended a Remembrance Day event in the constituency. She marched alongside veterans with a hat pulled down over her eyes at the town's war memorial. She was forced out the cabinet earlier this week after it was revealed she had held multiple meetings with Israeli officials without telling the Government.Prime Minister Theresa May called her back from a trip to Africa for a face-to-face meeting on Wednesday after which Ms Patel resigned.Speaking after yesterday's service the Brexit supporting MP said she had been inundated with support from her constituents. She told the BBC: I've been overwhelmed with support from colleagues across the political divide.Of course, nothing is more humbling than the support I've received from my constituents.I look forward to returning to Parliament on Monday where I will continue to be a strong voice for Witham and Britain. In the days before her resignation it was revealed she had unauthorised meetings with business and political figures in Israel during a family holiday in August. It then emerged she had asked Government officials to examine whether Britain could give money to the Israeli Defence Forces. The IDF carry out humanitarian work in the Golan Heights and it was revealed Ms Patel had visited the area during her holiday. The British Government doesn't recognise Israel's ownership of the area after they seized it from Syria during the SIx-Day War in 1981.She has been replaced by Penny Morduant, the Conservative MP for Portsmouth, who also supported the campaign to leave the European Union. We pay for your stories!
