The Preserve must be experienced to fully appreciate the beauty of Florida's Nature Coast wetlands. With streams, lakes, salt marshes and pine and hardwoods forest, The Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve is an undisturbed piece of old Florida. We are a 501 (3) (c) non-profit organization. Our charter is to provide Yankeetown's Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve conservation and educational support for the Preserve, its Board of Trustees and the Town of Yankeetown. Activities include but not limited to aid in planning and maintaining the Preserve, recruiting and training volunteers, fund-raising through grants and public fund-raising activities, publicity and organizing public events that enhance and support community awareness and support of the Preserve.

Florida Black Bear at the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve

Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve Friendly Fire Controlled Burn
“Friendly Fires: Why they are used and how to keep them friendly” Saturday, February 28, 2015, 1:00PM
The WGP presents a program on Friendly Fires by Chris Camargo of the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Chris’ program will simulate an actual fire crew briefing prior to a prescribed burn. You will learn about conditions to take under consideration, why a burn is used for forest management, and how the burn is conducted. After the simulated briefing, Chris will move outside to review the fire engine pointing out how this equipment is used on a prescribed fire. The program will be at the Ellie Schiller Education Center, Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve, 1001 Old Rock Road, Yankeetown, FL. Registration opens at 12:30 with light refreshments served. The program is open to all ages and is free.

Join us Wednesday March 16th, 10am at the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve in Yankeetownn, Florida for another in our series of environmental presentations. Andrea Junkunc, Park specialist at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park will give a great presentation on “The Many Hats of Vultures”. Most people have a bad opinion of these birds, but as Andrea will show, Vultures around the world provide a needed service and prevent disease, worldwide. If you think you know Vultures, you’ll be surprised to learn about their family units, how they help Rangers inn Africa and more! These birds are much more than just the clean up crew! After the presentation those who wish can walk up the Preserves Observation Tower to spot our Vulture friends! That’s Wednesday, March 16th, 10am at the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserves Visitors Center. “The Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve is owned and operated by the Town of Yankeetown and was purchased with funding from the Florida Communities Trust.”
Potts Preserve
The District's 9,300-acre Potts Preserve is a great place to get outside with your friends and family. The property offers a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, camping, biking, boating, fishing and horseback riding. The Florida National Scenic Trail runs through the property and it's a site on the Great Florida Birding Trail. The preserve is located just north of Inverness in Citrus County. More exploring around the Homosassa Tract lead me to this area where an old quarry is. The area today is a series of scenic ponds and there are lots of places to roam here. One of the trails in the area is known as the Burnt Bridge Trail.
