Croom Ghost Town in Withlacoochee State Forest (Part Two)
Croom was an old town that existed in the late 1800's into the early 1900's in Hernando County. Turpentine and logging were big industries in the area. A railroad line once went through the town and connected many other small towns in the area. The area was once known as Pemberton Ferry, the site was located near the Withlacoochee River. Today the area is part of the Croom Tract at Withlacoochee State Forest. When visiting please be respectful and leave all history as you find it, much of what was here is now gone but some remnants can still be seen. It is prohibited and illegal to remove artifacts from this forest. Watch Part One here:

Abandoned Phosphate Mine - Withlacoochee State Forest
I've been unable to find a name for this particular mine, perhaps it wasn't given one.

Mannfield Cemetery in Withlacoochee State Forest
This old cemetery is deep in the woods by what used to be a town called Mannfield. In 1880's the area was part of this townsite which is now overgrown and lost to the forest except for this cemetery. It's located in the Citrus Tract by Mannfield Pond or Mansfield Pond. These were some of the early inhabitants and only one stone had clear markings from what I could see. I enjoyed discovery the place and learning about the town. Here is the link for the town info:
Cave at Withlacoochee State Forest
Exploring in Withlacoochee State Forest I saw this cave opening in the woods. Throughout this section of the forest in Citrus County there are many caves and karst formations. Just some of the interesting terrain with many trails to roam. This cave seems to drop down vertically at the entrance so I am not sure how extensive this cave is. Always be careful around these places and be safe. Do not go in to the caves without proper equipment and an experienced guide. Please be respectful of the areas as well, some of these caves have become vandalized over the years. Visit these links to learn more about this tract:

Old Iron Bridge in Withlacoochee State Forest
Croom is an old town long since vanished and is now part of the Withlacoochee State Forest. I explored a lot around certain areas covering where I can and have found lots of evidence from the town. This area is where Iron Bridge used to be crossing the Withlacoochee River.
In the late 1890's Croom was a vital little agricultural town that sported a turpentine still, sawmill, sugar mill, RR switch out and a RR Bridge. The people of Brooksville would ride the train out to the town and swim in the river under the Old Iron RR Bridge.

Croom Turpentine Camp in Withlacoochee State Forest
This old turpentine camp was part of the old town Croom going back to the late 1800's. Around the site I saw different Herty Cups that were used in the turpentine industry. I also observed numerous bricks around the site. The town has long since vanished sometime around the early 1900's but remnants like this can be still be found. As always I left all artifacts where I found them. Check out these links for more history and information:

155,000 acres spread over nine distinct tracts. The World Wildlife Fund said it was one of the ten coolest places on Earth. I got awsome video structures, footprints, and a wolf and cactus...things that don't belong in Florida.
