How to do Bruges Belgium with small children
Some tips on traveling with a big family and not braking the bank as well as a little bit from our trip to Bruges Belgium.
In Bruges - Tourism
Bruges (pronounced broozh), the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry (two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks. Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, even as he keeps a fatherly eye on Rays often profanely funny exploits, finds his mind and soul being expanded by the beauty and serenity of the city. But the longer they stay waiting for Harrys call, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, a dwarf American actor (Jordan Prentice) shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloë (Clémence Poésy), who may have some dark secrets of her own. And when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Rays vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences.

Travel Tips: Finding Local Information
Travel Tips: Finding Local Restaurants and Attractions - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats.
My favorite thing to do when I travel is to really get off the beaten path and interact with locals and try to really dig in to a culture. And the ways that I go about that is really using my social media connections many times.
If I put out on twitter that I am going to be in Barcelona and do, you know, I will ask people for suggestions and things like that. It is amazing! You will meet people who live in Barcelona. That will be very very helpful and will either give you information or maybe even agree to meet up with you.
Another resource you can use is the Couchsurfing community. So couchsurfing.org the website is not only for, you know, finding places to stay overnight but it is also a really really great way to meet locals.
Many of the locations, many of the big cities on Couchsurfing have like local meetup groups or people that just say 'Hey, if you are in town we will meet for coffee!' or 'I will walk you around the city and do a little personal tour'. So those are some really great ways to get local.
Another way to go local when you are traveling is consider volunteering because quiet frankly volunteering is probably the most in depth you will get into a culture and community. You will learn the most, you will make the closest friends and things like that. So lots of time what I would do is combine a volunteering trip with another trip so that maybe you go in and you do the volunteering first, you make some connections, etc., and then you will get a lot of good advice on where to go and what to do.
And then, you know, the last half of your trip is maybe more typical travels for you are doing more sight seeing and things like that. But you have really got advice from the locals and who knows, they may be giving you free places to stay or anything like that too. So options are endless.

BELGIUM: EURO 2000 FANS AND POLICE CLASHES
Natural Sound
XFA
English football fans returning to Brussels after their team's victory over rivals Germany in the Euro 2000 tournament have clashed with locals.
Hundreds of English supporters returned by train from the town of Charleroi, where England beat Germany one-nil, and fanned out in the centre of the Belgian capital.
They were awaited by local residents, who toured the streets in the Place de la Bourse area in the city centre.
Fighting broke out and police fired tear gas to disperse the mobs.
There appeared to be a few injuries.
At one point, riot police with dogs closed in on a group of English fans who had taken refuge in a bar and used teargas to force them out.
About 30 fans, clutching their hands to their mouths, came out of the bar one by one and were arrested and loaded on buses for deportation.
In all, more than 900 supporters have been detained by Belgian police in the last 24 hours.

In Bruges Trailer
In UK Cinemas April 18. In Bruges is the darkly comedic tale of the fates of hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson). After a difficult job in London, the team is ordered by their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes) to cool their heels in Bruges. Very much out of their comfort zones, the men find themselves drawn into increasingly dangerous entanglements with locals, tourists, and a film shoot. Soon, their perspectives on life and death are violently skewed.

Bruges is a complete character in the film. Basically it is two characters and Bruges, that is what the story is about. If you had said no I would have made a different film.

9. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Martin McDonagh, Film Director of In Bruges :
Just the black comedy I think, the balance of the darkness and the laughs. Aside from that, no it's kind of trying to move away from both of those things. Its not a particularly, even though Colin and Brendan are Irish, its not in any way an Irish story. They are two hit men, who have been sent from London, in fact. So no it's getting away from a lot of that, aspect of my past writing. And its not really, apart from the gothic dark qualities, its not really very similar to Pillowman, aside from the black.

11. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Martin McDonagh, Film Director of In Bruges:
My history is playwriting so I kind of know how to do dialogue well and I guess its something of a rarity, certainly in Hollywood films a little bit. I think they were attracted to that and its very tight, a tightly plotted story. And I think that appealed to them to.

13. SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) Martin McDonagh, Film Director of In Bruges:
They are not just good actors, they are really nice people too. And they have been helping me a lot, and everyone in the DP, production designer, producers are really nice too. We have a good supportive team so right now I am feeling good. On Friday morning it might be different; but it's good so far; but a little nervous, yes.

COLIN FARRELL IN BRUGES
Hollywood star Colin Farrell was out and about in Bruges today to mark the beginning of his latest shoot for the movie 'In Bruges.'
The production which begins filming in Belgium in February is the feature directorial debut of Martin McDonagh who held a press conference at City Hall to talk about the film.
'In Bruges' is the darkly comedic tale of the fates of hit men Ray (Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) who, after a difficult job in London join their boss (Ralph Feinnes) to kick back back in Bruges.
The men find themselves drawn into increasingly dangerous entanglements with locals, tourists, and a film shoot. Soon, their perspectives on life and death are violently twisted.
Although this is McDonagh's first feature film, he won an Oscar for his live-action short 'Six Shooter's and as a playwright he was nominated for several Tony Awards.
My history is playwriting so I kind of know how to do dialogue well and I guess its something of a rarity, certainly in Hollywood films a little bit, said McDonagh. I think they (the actors) were attracted to that and its very tight, a tightly plotted story. And I think that appealed to them to.
'In Bruges' is scheduled for release sometime in 2008.
