Places to see in ( Weimar - Germany ) Wittumspalais
The Wittumspalais in Weimar was built between 1767 and 1769 by Jakob Friedrich von Fritsch , privy councilor and minister in Weimar, on the site of a former Franciscan monastery as a city palace. The design is by the Saxon master builder Johann Gottfried Schlegel . The building plot was representative of the so-called Esplanade , today's Schillerstraße. After the Weimar Castle fire, the Duchess Anna Amalia lived in the palace from May 1774 and acquired it in 1775 for a purchase price of 20,100 Reichstalern . Anna Amalia lived in the Wittumspalais until her death in 1807. Here also found the famous table rounds of theWeimar Musenhofes instead of those who gathered in the summer country seats Ettersburg ( Castle and Park Ettersburg ) or Castle Tiefurt .
From 1775 the interiors were designed. The ceiling paintings are by Adam Friedrich Oeser . After 1807, the palace was administered by the Ducal Court Marshal. From 1808 to 1848 the Weimarer Masonic Lodge Amalia met in the building. From 1833 to 1848, sessions of the Landtag took place in the ballroom. In 1848 the library of the Lesemuseum was relocated to the Wittumspalais. From 1858 the painter Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth used the ballroom as a studio. The painter Friedrich Preller used this hall between 1864 and 1868 for his Ulysses cycle .
1870/71, the Grand Duke Carl Alexander commissioned extensive restoration work. In 1919, the Goethe National Museum took over the Wittumspalais. The air raids on Weimar in the Second World War also hit the Wittumspalais: with heavy roof damage and destroyed doors and windows. 1949 was opened as a museum again. The living rooms offer a vivid picture of noble living culture. The Wittumspalais is part of the Klassisches Weimar ensemble , which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 .

Places to see in ( Weimar - Germany ) Theaterplatz
Just over 250 years ago, the site of today's Theaterplatz was pure arable land. At that time the Wittumspalais , along today's Wielandstraße, was a city wall. In front of it was a green meadow. In the years 1757 to 1765 the softening of Weimar took place. The medieval city wall was demolished and it began the usual land speculation.
The Wittumspalais was built on the east side of the newly created square. West of it grew a large garden, which was abandoned in 1820. Originally the Chinese Pavilion erected for Anna Amalia , which was demolished after her death by her son Carl August 1818/19, in 1821 he left the building with the paintings of Adam Friedrich Oeser (1717-1799) in the castle park of Belvedere true to the original rebuild.
Here the pavilion received the today common name Red Tower. 1779/80 was approximately at the site of today's National Theater, the Comedy House (also Redoutenhaus called), which was raised in 1791 for the Court Theater, the predecessor of today's National Theater . The central focus of the square is the 1857 designed by Ernst Rietschel Late Classical Goethe-Schiller monument .
Today Theaterplatz opens up all directions of the city: via Schillerstraße to the southeast, Schützengasse to the south, Dingelstedtstraße to the west, Wielandstraße to the north to Goetheplatz, and finally the Zeughof leads into the old town.
