After a decade of drought, recent deluge has finally filled Brisbane's dams. When Wivenhoe Dam on the Brisbane River is full, it's flood storage capacity must be released within a few weeks, to lessen the chance of flooding in Brisbane if there is more rain. This release in October 2010 was the first since 1999 and was filmed at 9:00 am on 15 October at peak discharge.

The primary purpose of Wivenhoe Dam is the supply of potable water for the Brisbane and Ipswich regions. In addition, the dam also provides for flood mitigation control, hydroelectricity and for recreation.
The sole purpose of Splityard Creek Dam is for the generation of hydroelectricity. The dam's water capacity is enough for the power station to run at full load for approximately ten hours giving a total capacity of 500 megawatts.
