Poland - WWII Wolf's Lair (Wolfsschanze, Wilczy Szaniec)
Information Provided by:
The Wolf's Lair (German: Wolfsschanze; Polish: Wilczy Szaniec) was the German Führers first Eastern Front military headquarters in World War II. The complex, which became one of several Führerhauptquartiere (Führer Headquarters) in various parts of Eastern Europe, was built for the start of Operation Barbarossa—the invasion of the Soviet Union—in 1941. It was constructed by Organisation Todt.
The top secret, high security site was in the Masurian woods about eight kilometres (5.0 mi) east of the small East Prussian town of Rastenburg. Three security zones surrounded the central complex where the Führer's bunker was located. These were guarded by personnel from the Reichssicherheitsdienst and the Wehrmacht's armoured Führerbegleitbrigade. Despite the security, the most notable assassination attempt against Hitler was made at the Wolf's Lair on 20 July 1944.
He first arrived at the headquarters on 23 June 1941. In total, he spent more than 800 days at the Wolfsschanze during a 3½-year period until his final departure on 20 November 1944. In mid-1944, work began to enlarge and reinforce many of the Wolf's Lair original buildings. The work was never completed because of the rapid advance of the Red Army during the Baltic Offensive in late 1944. On 25 January 1945, the complex was blown up and abandoned 48 hours before the arrival of Soviet forces.

Wolf's lair Hitler’s Bunker in Poland - Wolfsschanze
It was already lunch hour when we arrived at Wolfsschanze (Wolf's Lair), and we were greeted with a long line of cars and buses leading into the entrance, not the best start.
We stopped and used one of the small outside tables to eat something, before starting our visit.
This was Adolf Hitler's headquarters in East Prussia, and the place where he spent nearly half of WWII, and although we expected some visitor's given the history behind this place, the truth is we didn't anticipate these many. Things changed once we were inside the compound, it feels much like a park with lots of space and unless you are with a guided tour you can feel like you are all alone, just use a map and information leaflet to choose your own path.
Because we had our son we decided to go our own way and avoid the crowds as much as possible and this turned out to be great.
What to expect?
You can expect to be around a part of WWII history, surrounded by the remains of bunkers and reinforced concrete walls. It's quite the sight actually and there are many interesting stories around every building.
My favourite was the story of the attempted assassination on Hitler, but there are many other's that haunt this place to this day.
Looking at most of the buildings you can see the results of Hitler's order to destroy the compound and avoid its use by the Red Army.
It's a dark moment of world history and one that the forest is slowly reclaiming making it feel and look quite dark and mysterious.
It's a great visit if you like WWII history, of course, it's hard to show on video or in pictures just how large these bunkers are, it's an impressive feat of engineering to build these structures. It's hard to understand the forces that destroyed 60 x 25m slabs of reinforced concrete 7m thick.
Our Recommendations
Go early. It gets very busy mid-morning and afternoon.
Get a guidebook as none of the bunkers has information on them at all.
Personal guides have stories so you might consider it if you have time and you like in-depth info.
Take water with you, you won't find it easily and the area is quite large.
Options for military vehicle tour on the sites across the road from the main area
2 signed walks, red and blue. Take your time to soak up the history
A small torch is really worth taking.

World War II: Wilczy Szaniec - Wolfsschanze - The Wolf's Lair
Saw an awesome tunnel in one of the dilapidated buildings formally known as The Wolf's Lair. Located in Gierłoż, Poland, this series of buildings deep in the woods was Adolf Hitler's headquarters during World War II. Do I dare explore the rusty ruins?

New artefacts were discovered at the site of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's Eastern Front headquarters during World War II, the Wolf's Lair bunker, located deep inside the forest in Gierloz.
Footage from Friday shows the combs, razors, toothbrushes, plates, signboards and other objects that were found in the Nazi complex during excavations.
Dozens of prospectors cooperated with us for several weekends and indeed managed to dig up some artefacts from the ground. We intentionally avoid the word souvenir, because for us these are not things that we would like to easily remember. These are items that show how the quarters could function during the war, explained the managing director of the Wolf's Lair, Zenon Piotrowicz.
Signboards are interesting for us, as they show that there was a hairdresser in this place, in this small town. In the end two and a half thousand people lived here during the war, so everything had to be here, he added.
The Nazi complex was abandoned in 1944 following Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg's assassination attempt on Hitler, and hasn't undergone any renovations since.
The remote site has been open to the public since the beginning of 1990s after the fall of communism, and attracts around 300,000 visitors annually.

Mamerki, Mauerwald, Hitler's Wolfsschanze
Mamerki,(Mauerwald) a few kilometres away from the „Wolfsschanze“ (Wolf’s Liar) the “Bunker” are undestroyed.
There was no time in 1945 to destroy them too. I wonder how long one can visit all the bunkers from the outside and from the inside without restrictions.

Wolfs Lair (Hitlers Bunker) - Gierloz, Poland Part 1/2
The Wolfs Lair was a large military complex used By Adolf Hitler and his top military command until late 1944, when the German army partially destroyed it due to advancing Soviet troops. The site was famous for the failed assassination attempt of Adolf Hitler (made famous by the movie Valkyrie). While Adolf Hitler survived the assassination attempt, 4 others were killed and 13 wounded. The complex is now mostly in ruins however the ruins make exploring the partially collapsed caverns an amazing experience. I divided this video into 2 parts again due to the length.
