Thomas Woltz, “Threatened Landscapes: Designed Countermeasures of N. B. W. Landscape Architects”
Public parks are a source of civic identity for the communities they serve – inclusivity and authenticity are crucial. Similarly, memorials are bastions of democratic exchange and act as repositories of our cultural past and evolution. Thomas Woltz will present projects from the portfolio of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW) that demonstrate the power of the firm’s research-based design to reframe our relationship with civic, ecological, and cultural systems within the public realm. Lastly, Thomas will present NBW projects that prioritize the ecological health and resilience in agriculturally productive landscapes and reveal surprising connections between these typologies.
Over the past two decades of practice, landscape architect Thomas Woltz has forged a body of work that integrates the beauty and function of built forms with an understanding of complex biological systems and restoration ecology. As principal of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (NBW), a 45-person firm based in Charlottesville, Virginia and New York City, Woltz has infused narratives of the land into the places where people live, work and play, deepening the public’s enjoyment of the natural world and inspiring environmental stewardship. NBW projects create models of biodiversity and sustainable agriculture within areas of damaged ecological infrastructure and working farmland, yielding hundreds of acres of reconstructed wetlands, reforested land, and flourishing wildlife habitat.
Presently, Thomas and NBW are entrusted with the design of major public parks across the United States, Canada and New Zealand, they include Memorial Park in Houston, Hudson Yards in New York City, NoMA Green in Washington DC, Cornwall Park in Auckland, the Aga Khan Garden in Alberta, Canada, and three parks in Nashville, including Centennial Park.
In 2013 was named Design Innovator of the Year by the Wall Street Journal magazine and in 2017 Fast Company named Woltz one of the most creative people in business.
Towards a New Australian Security
In an interconnected world, Australia’s security interests will continue to expand faster than its capabilities. Emerging challenges will join enduring ones on a crowded horizon of risk. Australia’s strategic lifelines will be caught up in a changing Indo-Pacific region and tensions surrounding China’s rise. Terrorism will test the resilience of Australian society. Australian governments will face hard decisions about whether this country should remain the principal security provider in a troubled neighbourhood. New patterns of risk will call for fresh thinking, new capabilities, flexible policy mechanisms, creative partnerships and an inclusive approach – in short, a new Australian security.
In this NSC Public Seminar, the incoming Head of the National Security College at the Australian National University, Professor Rory Medcalf, will offer some assessments on the long-term policy choices Australians and their governments will need to make to advance their country’s security interests in the uncertain decades ahead.
Professor Rory Medcalf commenced as the Head of the National Security College in January 2015. His professional background spans diplomacy, intelligence analysis, think tanks and journalism. Most recently he was the Director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute for International Policy from 2007 to 2015. Prior to that, Professor Medcalf worked as a senior strategic analyst with the Office of National Assessments. His experience as an Australian diplomat included a posting to New Delhi, a secondment to Japan’s foreign ministry and truce monitoring after the civil conflict in Bougainville. He has contributed to three landmark global reports on nuclear arms control. His earlier work in journalism was commended in Australia’s leading media awards, the Walkleys. Professor Medcalf has been active in developing Australia’s relations with India. He is the founding convener and co-chair of the Australia-India Roundtable, the leading informal policy dialogue between the two countries. His current research areas include Australia’s strategic and defence challenges, the further development of an Indo-Pacific concept of the Asian strategic environment, and prospects for maritime and nuclear stability in Indo-Pacific Asia. He holds nonresident affiliations with the Brookings Institution and the Lowy Institute, and is a member of the independent expert panel providing advice on the Australian Government’s 2015 Defence White Paper.

Great Writers of the West: John Steinbeck and the Environment (ArtsWest 2017)
Presentations from the ArtsWest symposium at Stanford University on May 10, 2017.
The world seemed on the brink of catastrophe when John Steinbeck published The Grapes of Wrath in 1939. Today we are confronted with our own cataclysmic moment in time. Steinbeck’s compassionate explorations of inequality, poverty-induced human migration, and environmental degradation yield insights we are at pains to grasp. As perhaps no other novelist before or since, Steinbeck had a fundamental ecological awareness. He shows us that people are not separate from the land on which we tread, and in fact share a common fate.

WATCH: Tech Crunch SF Disrupt 2019: Day two October 3, 2019
TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield is the world’s preeminent startup competition. Startup Battlefield features 15-30 top early stage startups pitching top judges in front of a vast live audience, present in person and online. Teams go through an intensive mini-accelerator for 8 weeks before each event, honing their business models and pitches. Startups pitch on stage for six minutes, followed by an intense question and answer session with top investors, entrepreneurs, and technologists, including prominent Silicon Valley figures like Marissa Mayer, Ron Conway, Fred Wilson and Roelof Botha, among many others – just like an investment pitch meeting.
Companies that launched at Tech Crunch include Vurb, Trello, Mint, Dropbox, Yammer, Tripit, Redbeacon, Qwiki, Getaround, and Soluto. The statistics on the 763 startups that have participated since the first competition, TC40 in 2007, tell a strong story: in aggregate, as of February 2019, they have raised $8.8 billion, while 109 have been acquired or have gone public. TechCrunch makes the complete details of past Battlefields and participants available on the Battlefield leaderboard.
It’s important to note that TechCrunch takes no fees or equity from the startups. Applying and participating in the Battlefield is 100% free.
Startup Battlefields take place both regionally and at TechCrunch Disrupt. Startup Battlefield at at TechCrunch Disrupt is industry and regionally agnostic. The winner takes away the Disrupt Cup, an equity-free check for $100,000 (at SF), and all the contestants enjoy immense press, investor and partner attention, along with membership in the elite ranks of Battlefield alums and to Extra Crunch.
In 2016, TechCrunch took the renowned competition on the road with our new Battlefield X events. Working with partners like the NFL, Facebook and others, TechCrunch Startup Battlefield X highlights startups in specific industries or regions with an exceptional emerging ecosystem. The Startup Battlefield X winners also win prize money, worldwide press recognition, the eyes of the global investment community, and an opportunity to appear on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco.
