Breckenridge Bourbon Whiskey:
Based high in Rocky Mountains of Colorado at an altitude of 9600 feet, Breckenridge Distillery calls themselves “The World’s Highest Distillery.” And yes, we are pretty sure that the irony is intended. If you took a hard look at their impressive range of product offerings and more than 2 dozen awards — including winning “Distillery of the Year”… twice — you might think that they have been around a long time. But Bryan Nolt founded the place in 2007. That makes their achievements even more impressive.
One of their signature products — and arguably one of their best sellers — is Breckenridge Bourbon. The first thing that a Bourbon fan might notice is that this is a blend… but don’t let that throw you. They mash and distill a lot of Bourbon in house and blend it with other high-rye, straight Bourbons from Tennessee, Indiana, and Kentucky.
They are pursuing flavor, and they get it for sure in this deeply hued dram with a luscious mouth-feel. What's the secret of the superior texture? According to Bryan, it's all about the pure, mineralized, snow-melt water that they have in abundance and use for distillation and proofing.
Nose
Firm banana, molasses, white pepper and roasted pecans.
Flavor
Warm honey, toasted dark bread, vanilla with notes of oak.
Few Rye Whiskey:
From the city of Evanston, Illinois, where the Temperance movement originates, comes a craft distillery that put a stop to long-standing dry laws in these parts. Situated in the backside alley of a former chop shop, Paul Hletko and his skilled team are crafting the finest spirits made from Corn, Rye and Barley. The distillery’s single purpose is to bring the best products made from the best grains, perfectly matured and finished under one roof.
Now to give you a brief backstory. In the 19th century, a woman named Francis Elizabeth Willard was elected President of the Chicago Christian Temperance Movement. She embarked on a decade-long crusade to prohibit alcohol in the US, and had succeeded. Mr. Hletko worked hard and lobbied against the law, and eventually, made it go away. Ironically, and hilariously, he’s named his craft spirits after Francis (FEW are the initials of her name). Bold move for sure.
FEW Rye Whiskey is aged in air dried oak barrels and is a meld of Rye, Corn and Malt in its mash. To be particular, 70% Rye, 20% corn and the rest consists of malted Barley. This makes for an exceptionally good Rye Whiskey, one that its creators are proud enough to call “the renaissance of Rye”. Young, and fierce yet really smooth around the corners. An impressive Whiskey from a genuine distillery with a bright future.
Wolfburn Aurora:
Thurso is the northernmost town on the British mainland. The first Wolfburn distillery was born on the site in the early 1800s. But by 1872, product had ceased. In 2011, Single Malt industry veterans Shane Fraser and Iain Kerr plotted a course to revive the namesake and signature far northern spirit. They broke ground in May of 2012 and had the first completed buildings by September, with production starting the following year. They quickly reached full production the following year and have not looked back — developing a range of six specialty Single Malts and periodic small batch releases.
Wolfburn Aurora is a story told in wood. Specifically, it is the marrying of pure Wolfburn Single Malt from three different cask types. First released in 2016, 40% of the spirit is aged in second-fill quarter-casks, 40% is aged in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels, and 20% is aged in first-fill Oloroso Sherry hogshead casks. The quarter casks age faster and therefore deliver an almost Cognac-like flavor. The ex-Bourbon barrels provide their signature caramel/vanilla notes. And the Oloroso casks deliver their magical rancio complexity. All in all this is a truly outstanding dram, even being awarded 92 points at the Concours International.
