A Day Trip to Daylesford Victoria
One autumn tuesday, Edwin and I embark on a short journey to Daylesford Victoria to discover the spa capital of Victoria. Though the time we spent in this beautiful Victorian town is not enough, yet overall, it wasn't a disappointment. Backround music by Patricia Kaas.
About:
Daylesford is a town located in the Shire of Hepburn, Victoria, Australia. It is a former goldmining town about 115 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. The broader area around the town, including Hepburn Springs to the north, is renowned for its natural spring mineral spas where visitors can sample the mineral water. This together with its proximity to Melbourne make it a popular destination for tourists.
Daylesford was founded in 1852 with the finding of alluvial gold in areas now occupied by Lake Daylesford. The area was initially called Wombat Flat. In 1854 Government Surveyor Fraser laid out a town site of 80 square chains and called it 'Wombat'. However it is believed that in 1855 Governor Hotham changed its name from Wombat to Daylesford after a town in Worcester, England.
Due to it being located in mountains, formed by volcanic activity about five million years ago, the region contains as much as 80% of all the mineral springs in Victoria. Not long after settlement Daylesford had been noted for these mineral springs and from the 1880s to the 1920s the town was a major spa resort after the railway from Carlsruhe reached the town in 1880. Four separate areas, Wombat Flat, Daylesford, Old Racecourse and Spring Creek were gradually amalgamated into the town of Daylesford-Hepburn Springs.
Lavandula Farm - Hepburn Springs, Victoria
Ten minutes North of Daylesford, Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm is nestled amongst the rolling hills of Shepherds Flat. One of Victoria's most important rural properties, Lavandula boasts European-style gardens planted out to frame and meander around the original 1850s stone buildings. Productive vegetable and herb gardens supply the cafe, La Trattoria. Lavender provides quality materials for the creation of farm-made body lotions and creams, room mists and insecticides, and essential oil.
Road Trip to Daylesford, Lavandula Farm and Hepburn Springs
A short drive from Melbourne, we visited the town of Daylesford. It's just a 10 minute drive from Ballarat city centre. One of the most popular destination there is the Lavandula Farm. It's a Swiss-Italian farm and it's a perfect place to relax while escaping the busy street of Melbourne. I like the cafe in the middle of the farm. We were lucky that time when there was a performer singing some opera songs. It's nice to get a sip of coffee while listening to those type of music. We ended our trip with a good pampering from the Hepburn Springs indoor pool.
