GudiMudi | One dream, One organisation, 300 Women | WomenWeave
GudiMudi encircles around a charitable trust called Women Weave, situated in the heart of Central India. It is an organisation that works on the skill development of around 300 women and contributes to their livelihoods. WomenWeave has supported the role of women in handloom weaving since its inception in 2002, working toward making handloom a profitable, fulfilling, sustainable and dignified income-earning activity particularly for women in rural areas of India. Through the Gudi Mudi Khadi Project, WomenWeave links organic and non-organic cotton farmers of Central India with formerly unemployed local women of Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh to create unique, contemporary khadi textiles for fashion products and home furnishings. The fabrics are handspun, hand-woven and much of it is naturally dyed with earth-friendly processes. The objective of this linkage is to ensure sustainable income and better lives for the weavers in the area in spinning and hand weaving of the local cotton.
Initially, I didn't want to do this at all! But when I reached Maheshwar, I knew I was smitten. The foundation of Women Weave is so strong that no external factor can ever be an obstacle. Women, who come together for women, weave in the open verandahs of this soul stirring complex everyday. Laughter is accompanied with the sound of looms, stories at lunch time and looking at life head-on, these women are each others’ best friends. And, in an extremely aurally way, they know they are there for each other.

The Rise of Handloom Entrepreneurs | The Handloom School, Maheshwar, India
Biggest revolution in the Indian handloom industry began, with Sally Holkar leading with WomenWeave, an NGO dedicated to support and develop the role of women in handloom weaving.
Originally beginning as a program by WomenWeave, The Handloom School (THS) offered a work-study program with a specialized curriculum in design, textile technology, business, and sustainability.
Over time, The Handloom School (THS) has established itself as the first institution in India, where the sole aim is to bridge the gap between the young handloom weavers in villages and towns and the larger business community in the world.
This gap, comprised of self-interested middlemen, limited access to the market, and lack of the technical know-how, has for long impeded the progress of these young weavers.
The students are weavers who are armed with traditional weaving skills, learnt from their ancestors, but don't have access to conventional academic education.
WomenWeave has put the tools and trust back in the hands of the weavers, who now empowered with the right mentorship, skills and exposure, are taking up the mantle of Handloom Hero - becoming the young custodians of the resources and processes of handloom in the contemporary marketplace.
THS provides these weavers with rigorous, non-traditional education, and is slowly developing into a central repository for handloom weaving knowledge and practices.
A place where handloom – won't just thrive and spread, but will be preserved, developed and evolved.

WomenWeave - Petition Video
Hand powered looms are ideally suited to the millions of men and women who weave exquisite textiles in the villages of rural India. Powerloom is not. The proposal to group powerloom with handloom is only to the advantage of 'interested parties'.. not to the weavers themselves.
Please sign this petition. Handloom is India's international, global heritage treasure.
