Set your Alarm Clock - The Grampians. Ep.45
THE GRAMPIANS, Victoria ⛰????????
We headed to the popular Grampians with no clue what to expect. We had been told it was Victoria's number one national park, so our expectations were high. ????
Well, after a 5 night stay - we can happily confirm we had a great time exploring this beautiful area!
We setup our caravan at The Plantation Campground, which is a FREE camp????, 10minutes north of Halls Gap! It is technically out of the National Park area so it is DOG FRIENDLY! How good is that. It has plenty of campsites, toilets, bucket showers, bore water taps and lots of fire pits! ????
During our 5 day expedition we did;
- Mt Abrupt summit (6.3km return)
- Wonderland loop - Venus baths, Splitters falls, Grand Canyon & The Pinnacles (9.6km loop)
- Tasted tested ice-cream at the local ice-creamery
- Explored the old Mafeking gold town
- Mt Staplyton summit (4km return)
- Hollow Mountain summit (2.2km return)
- MacKenzie Falls (2km return)
- Visited the Billimina Shelter of Aboriginal rock art (2.2km return)
- Explored some back roads and 4WD tracks around the Grampians
- The Balconies and Reeds lookout (2km return)
We also met up with lots of fellow travelers at our campsite each night. It was great having a chat over the campfire each night with different people. I think it made our stay that much more memorable. ????
Tips;
- go to the info centre and get yourself some maps so you can plan what you want to see. ????
- Plantation campground was quite popular, so make sure you get in early to grab a spot before the backpackers all roll in.
- You can have hot showers at the info centre, in town for $3 per person ????
- Make sure you take a backpack with plenty of snacks, water etc. and wear good walking shoes!
- There were plenty of bins around the Halls Gap town-park to deposit your rubbish ????
Overall a great 5 days exploring the Grampians and we definitely covered some kilometres over those days.
We will rest our legs ready for our next adventure - enroute to Flinders Ranges!

Grampians - The Pinnacle Walk
Depart from the Wonderland Carpark in Halls Gap for a 2.1km hike to the Pinnacle. It is a medium grade walk but well worth it. There are many breathtaking views along the way. Just make sure you carry plenty of water with you and a some fruit or a packed lunch to celebrate your arrival at the top. Enjoy !
Walk the Grampians Grand Canyon to Pinnacle lookout
Grand Canyon to Pinnacle lookout
Most Grampians visitors launch their day hikes from the Sundial car park. Unfortunately for them, they miss the Grand Canyon and all its beauty. The 900m walk runs through the middle of a gorge formed by rock ridges that run either side. Nearing the top of the Grand Canyon the rock cracks ajar. In the wetter month’s, water streams down into the gorge creating an impressive waterfall and a calming sound of trickling water for the duration of the walk. The perspective from up above the gorge is just as breathtaking too.
Despite the hike being short, it’s quite the adventure. Hopping across rocks, crossing foot bridges and even climbing ladders; there’s always something to keep you entertained.

The Pinnacles and MacKenzie Falls - Grampians
Up above the settlement of Halls Gap in the Grampians is a short walk to the Pinnacles. Starting at Wonderland car park, you head up and go through the Grand Canyon. Not like the US one, but still impressive when you look behind and see the view. Continue following the path, past the Cool Chamber, which is about half way up. Before long you make it to the pinnacles and the fantastic view over Halls Gap and the valley below. After the pinnacles do the loop, so head left at the first sign and it worth doing the extra bit. On that section you see the bridge to nowhere.
Once you arrived back to the carpark, head the the Mackenzie Falls. The drive takes about 15mins from Wonderland Carpark. The falls are pretty cool to see and worth going all the way to the bottom.
The walk took about 2 hours, but could be easily extended by parking in Halls Gap and walking up from Venus Pools. I also stayed at the YHA in Halls Gap, which was really nice and cheap place to stay.

Venus Baths Halls Gap Victoria - Grampians 12-12-2018
It was evening on 12th Dec 2018 and we decided to go for a walk to the baths. We came across a Wallaby so I started filming it, just with my phone; I then continued filming as we approached the baths. I don't speak but you can hear my breathing - lol. You can hear the trickle of the creek and the birds. It is a beautiful place to visit. The water is coloured because of the tannins in the surrounding trees and shrubs.
Chatauqua Peak
Chatauqua Peak walk in Halls Gap, Victoria, Australia is a great walk to introduce you to the beauty of The Grampians. It is one of my favourites. A great walk and the views of Halls Gap are amazing.

Swimming at Venus Baths in the Grampians National Park
Swimming and taking a bath at Venus Baths in the Grampians National Park near Halls Gap in western Victoria in Australia. Includes some quick notes on the walk in, taking a dip in three of the pools, and a little rock slide.
Hollow Mountain - Grampians National Park, Australia
This is one of our favourite walk in Grampians National Park. We have climbed this mountain many times. This time our friends, Thomas and Pinky were tagging along. It is a short 2.2 km return walk. It should take about 1.5 hours but we took our time to look around and took us double the time. In this video I want to show how scenic the trail is with high iron-stained cliff.
There are several caverns (hollow) on this mountain, which contributes to the name of this mountain.
Once we are up at the top, on a clear day and perfect weather, we can see the Wimmera Plains and the Mt Stapylton and the northern Grampians ranges.
