Potala refers to a mountain in India sacred to the religion, and for centuries its namesake palace has been at the core of Tibet’s monastic community.
Much of the current palace complex dates to the seventeenth century. But the earliest construction began a thousand years earlier, on the commission of a Tibetan king, in honor of his marriage to a princess of China. The growing fortress became the winter home for the Dalai Lamas, monastic leaders of Tibetan Buddhism.
UNESCO’s World Heritage designation extends to the neighboring Jokhang Temple, considered Tibet’s most sacred, and the Norbulingka, once the Dalai Lama’s summer residence.
Conflict led to the exile of the Dalai Lama from China’s Tibetan Autonomous Region in 1959, and the grounds became a museum. But the Potala Palace remains a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. Many travel long distances by foot to pay their respects. Potala is divided into the Red Palace, which is for religious use, and an administrative White Palace.
Visitors to Potala have to go with a tour group, and obtain a special permit. Once in, you pass through hallways lit by butter lamps, and into public areas watched over by monks. In addition to the historic structures, the heritage site contains a vast collection of sacred texts and works of art. Withstanding the elements and political struggle, Potala Palace remains an embodiment of Tibetan culture.

Tibet Today English Subtitles
On April 25th the Center for the China-Mexico Studies of the School of Economics at the Mexico University UNAM, was presented the conference Today’s situation in Tibet by Mr. Che Dhala (Qizdala in Chinese) Secretary of the Communist Party in Lhasa and member of the Tenth National People's Congress.
Tibet Support Group Tibet Mx (Pensando en Tíbet / Thinking in Tibet) was there.
For 90 minutes Che Dhala talked about the wonders that the Central Government has made for the Tibetans, for example, the abolition of theocracy and the peaceful liberation of Tibet. The construction of highways, airports, hotels and trains just for the development of the Tibetan people
Which is an absolute lie and we let him know we knew.
The Invasion From China to Tibet in 1949, have killed more than a million Tibetans because of China's policies of repression towards the legitimate owners of Tibet. their human rights are trampled upon every day.
We were allowed to ask a question, whose answer was evasive, and he spoke what was not asked, we insisted on the subject and only managed to spin the answer hesitantly.
Then another colleague asked for the opportunity to talk about the 144 immolated there so far, and was denied the word, so the members of Tibet Mx, got up of our seats and speak up and we wave the Tibetan flag and demand the Immediate freedom of the Political Prisoners, the unrestricted respect for human rights of Tibetans, and we also asked for the location of the Panchen Lama kidnapped 21 years ago by China,
We called him a liar for saying that in Tibet there are no problems and that Tibetans live there peacefully and quietly.
We call him murderer for all the lives that his position has started and
We call him traitor, because he is Tibetan and works as a puppet of the Chinese against their Tibetan brothers and sisters.
In the end, he had to walk out by the back door.
China/Tibet 8. Lhasa. The Potala Palace.
The Potala Palace is the jewel in Lhasa's crown. It is the official winter residence of the Dalai Lama who is in exile in India. The palace was built in three phases from 1640. The newest phase is painted red and built from compressed straw for lightness.

Sera Monastery, Tibet - China Travel Channel
The Sera Monastery about 2 km north of Lhasa is one of the three major monasteries of the Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet
The Sera Monastery once held 7000 Buddhist monks, yet today there are only 250. Yet this monastery is equally important as the Drepung Monastery. Here the monastery's own print shop can be visited. Some of the shelves with scripts can be passed from below. Passing below the scripts means that you have read the scripts.
A unique feature is the monks’ debates in the courtyard. Discussions are started when someone asks a question. While doing this he claps his hands loudly. The person seated in front of him then replies. The next day the rolls are switched. The debates are in part conducted very intensively
