Haircut in the historic 성우이용원 Seongu Barbershop in Seoul, South Korea.
In 1927, Mr. Lee’s grandfather opened the barbershop. At that time, he was the second Korean who was given a permit for barbering by the occupying Japanese. It was in the 1960s when Mr. Lee began cutting hair. He worked with his dad all the way up until the 1970s when his dad decided to retire.
We stopped by the shop to film on a weekday afternoon thinking perhaps it might be quieter during a weekday as opposed to the weekend. We found Mr. Lee had a regular stream of customers coming by the shop so when it was our turn, I hopped into the chair and the camera started to roll!
Mr. Lee is a little over 5’ tall so uses a footstool to stand on while working on his customers. You’ll also see him using potato starch in my hair as a visual aid.

The oldest barbershop in Seoul opened in 1927.
On Dec. 1, 2018, I visited Seong-Woo barbershop located in Malli-dong near Namyeong Station. I felt like I'm in alive history museum. Barber master Lee has proud of his cutting skill. Today was literally unique experience, and I strongly recommend this barbershop to tourists visiting Seoul, Korea.

Barber From Another Era
Opened in 1927, Seongwoo Barbershop is one of the oldest in South Korea. Its 68-year-old proprietor-cum-barber Lee Nam-yeol may also be one of the longest-running barbers in the country.
Time seems to stand still here. Since Lee's grandfather opened the shop under Japanese rule, Lee has kept most of the original furniture intact. A briquet stove warms up a quaint little parlor, where Lee still uses tools from the 1950s -- the ones he used as a younger man, beginning to work with his father, who had inherited the shop from his father-in-law.
Patrons from all over the country and varying backgrounds visit Lee. A haircut is 13,000 won, or $12. Well-known figures like the chairman of Samsung Group Lee Kun-hee has gotten his haircut here too. Lee only cares about one thing: giving the best haircut to customers that see the value in his old shop, in his old hands, which Lee calls the hands of magic.
Lee’s business has been generally prosperous. The crackdown on men's long hair during the Park Chung-hee dictatorship throughout the 1970s made for pretty good business, he said. But the barbershop industry has faltered since the late-70s, when ‘decadent hair and cosmetics services’ started sprouting up, essentially providing illicit sexual services behind the facade of being a barbershop. These services largely tainted the reputation of barbers everywhere; Lee says many of his colleagues quit in the 1980s and he himself lost entire customer bases -- namely that of children and teenagers.
Back in the day, he used to work 16 hours per day. Today, only nine hours. Due to health concerns, he takes Wednesdays off, but he’s not quitting anytime soon. “I will work as long as my eyes can see and my legs can stand up for work,” Lee said.

Diagonal training on the field and massage from 2003 Millano Champion Iten Kenya
Today we did diagonal on the field and I got a massage from John Birgen, 2003 Millano Champion (winning at 2:09:08). Diagonal training is an integral part of training for Kenyans. On a grass field, you do slow jogging on the straight and do comfortably fast running through the diagonal. You are running faster than your jogging speed but not too fast where you are exerting yourself. You must remain relaxed and focused on your rhythm and form. It is time for your body to relax and mind to focus.

BBQs in South Korea is one of the most popular food items and a personal favorite of mine. Loads of beef, pork, veggies cooked on a hot grill or charcoal and then eaten with veggies or cold noodles is a dining experience you NEED to have while in South Korea.

I received the Evercell Anti-aging Facial by Chaum, courtesy of Korean beauty/medical concierge service, EUNOGO & the Seoul Blogger Brunch. This was a non-invasive facial that focused on lifting & relaxing my facial muscles, through the treatment of Face Muscle Stretching therapy.
