FRONT ROAD WOODCHURCH
UNWELCOME CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR WOODCHURCH AS DEVELOPER SUBMITS BARELY CHANGED HOUSING PLANS (SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE)
Plans for ten so called executive houses have been re-submitted for the third time so that local consultation will take place over the Christmas holiday.
Woodchurch residents have until January 7th to respond.
'This seems like a cynical move to us,' said a spokesman for the Woodchurch Village Association.
'There are detail changes to the plans, but they still don't address very real village concerns about the scale, density and layout of the houses, and parking, which was inadequate before, and is now actually worse. Doubtless the developers will deny this, but if the plans are approved as they stand, we fear this will lead to potentially dangerous overspill parking on a portion of Front Road where there is a blind bend.'
The WVA is releasing this short video showing the impact on traffic flow of a single, parked car on Front Road, filmed in good weather conditions on a December weekday.
A camera attached at driver eye level in a moving car, also shows the angle of the bend where the development's five, steep driveways would be built.
'The results were revealing, and in one case quite frightening,' said the WVA spokesman. 'Anyone with an interest in the housing plans, whether they support them or not, should look at this video and think long and hard about whether letting this scheme go forward as it stands is a good idea.'
The plans currently envisage spaces for 22 cars, a reduction of three on the previous submission, which the WVA had already branded 'totally inadequate.'
'Most households are multi-occupancy, and these will be family homes, some with adult children, who are likely to be car owners. It's probable that many will be two and three car households, and this could easily result in an extra thirty vehicles,' warned the WVA spokesman.
Residents of nine of the ten properties opposite the site own some twenty-five vehicles. The other has no cars at all. Visitors often park on Front Road, frequently illegally straddling pavements, forcing pedestrians and elderly electric buggy users into the carriageway. 'We believe the current development plans could make this much worse and create a permanent problem. Surely there would be road safety implications to this?'
Those wanting to see the altered plans should go to the Planning and Building Portal of Ashford Borough Council's website on: ashford.gov.uk/planning using reference 11/01430AS

Heage Windmill 1994 on East Midlands Today, before its restoration.
Old footage showing the poor state of Heage Windmill before the restoration.
The first news report, probably in 1994 or early 1995, shows the eroded condition of the soft ironstone from which she is built. Alan, with Margaret Kent , the then Chairman of Heage Windmill Society, and Dave Nicholls, another early worker, are seen examining rotten flooring, caused by water ingress. The condition of some pieces of machinery are also shown.
The report is by James Roberson, who still reports for EMT today 20 years later !
The presenter at the start is Kathy Rochford.
