Rhodes - Greece Medieval Rose Highlights 2
Highlights from 1st Medieval Rose festival - Saturday 26 - Sunday 27 of May 2007
____________________________
The Festival of the Medieval Rose begins on the third sounding of the trumpets, as the Order of the Knights, cavalry and infantry, along with its whole entourage from the Castle, emerge from the gates of the Palace, making their way along the renowned Street of the Knights.
In four of the squares of the Medieval Town, wooden stands will be set up, selling sweets and nibbles of those days, as well as traditional handicrafts. The craftsmen: carpenters, blacksmiths, potters will be working with their traditional equipment, while street artists: jugglers, acrobats, fakirs, contortionists will be performing before the public.
Warriors, monks, merchants, noblewomen, witches and sorcerers, alchemists, scholars, peasants and of course... animals, will be wandering around and banquets will be ready for whoever might wish to eat or rest.
Pillories, exhibitions, children's games, puppet theatre, ritual representations, archery and chess contests, dance and music performances will be taking place in different points of the city.
And when the night falls, the trumpets will sound again, as a sign for the start of a parade of all participants, holding torches, to walk from the D' Amboise Gate up to the St Mary of the Burg, where the celebration will end with a last surprise!

Plaka is located at the entrance to the Acropolis through the streets of Athens were the most frequently visited tourist places to find. This is where the old building as if fashion is bringing traditional Greek restaurants and tavernas and souvenir shops in Insadong Seoul's like they're lined with Old antique. Looked into the gift shop where one lined street in Plaka. Although this seems fake, but somewhere the old sculptures and then enjoyed my eyes. For me that felt itself equal to a small museum gift shop.

The Bazaar of Corfu Old Town (Greece)
Otherwise known as “Campiello,” this area is the fascinating maze of narrow streets, alleyways and steps that are squeezed between the Old Fort - Old Port - New Fort. It is like a miniature Venice with much of its appeal being the residential atmosphere. In centuries gone by this area was surrounded by city walls, long since torn down, but the only way to expand the living quarters was to go upwards. Therefore it is full of high buildings and you can often see laundry strung across the alleyways. This is a lovely part of the town worth visiting. Corfu Old Town is a shopper's paradise.
Being in the Old Town of Corfu (Kerkyra) trully is amazing. It has a fascinating road network, complemented by small squares which also developed naturally. They are mainly found in front of churches, and apart from their function as a place for social gaterings, they are necessary breathing spaces and commercial shopping areas in the densely-populated town. Shopping in Kerkyra might just only be a pretext for going back - yet again - into the magical mediaeval world of the Campiello, designer jewellery, high fashion boutiques, atmospheric antique shops, gift shops with a personal air and a touch of ethnic interest, workshops housing woodcarvers and traditional Venetian cabinet-makers. Folk art, contemporary trends and the Venetian heritage paraded before our eyes in the colourful images and successive surprises concealed in the labyrintine lanes of Kerkyra. Beautifully decorated window displays and colourful folklore stands, designer pret a porter and kumkuats, a 13th century church and a Venetian well, lines of washing hanging above our heads and the philharmonic playing: shopping in Kerkyra is a fascinating business!
Old city is also UNESCO World Heritage since 2007.

Gathering food in Chaco forest
WEBSIDE:
Decades back for the hunters-gatherers peoples, the xenophile woods of Chaco provided sufficient food. Tribes fought for the control of the carob trees with the same commitment that
they had when hunting or fishing. The natives perceived and, still perceive the Chaco as a place of abundance, the knowledge of the territory, of the different ecosystems and types of woods and forests allowed them to have a calendar of food supply, that ensured accessible food throughout the year. The most important period was between the months of November and December, months of the abundance, of the maturity of the carob trees that signalled the rhythm of life, festivals and ceremonials among the tribes of the Chaco.
The main source of food supply consisted in the forest that provided the most essential food and an agriculture of marginal importance that contributed to food only at certain times of the year. The sustainability of the exploitation of the forest was based on an itinerant gathering. The products of the forest have fixed periods of ripening that define the calendar for gathering and consummation. In an indigenous communities where the people has its own land, and the forest resources are still accessible and available, the forest can provide a nutritious and appropriate diet that integrates with the foods from the fields and market.
This video describes the gathering of the carob. The natives of the Great Chaco region consider the carob tree as a gift from the gods, object of veneration and devotion. The mythology that is associated with the tree par excellence, is wide spread Under its shade whole tribes gathered to decide the future or to avoid the worse possible fate. Just as the maize, which is considered to be the sacred plant for the indigenous people of Central America or the potato which in the Andean world is associated with the origin of the world, the carob tree too, represents for the indigenous peoples of Chaco, the first tree created and its pods are the principal forest food.
The carob tree has always had a great cultural importance. It is considered a divine tree for the amount of uses and functions it has: its large shade cools in the great heat, it supply food. With its fruit, beverages are made, with its bark medicines and are dyed fabrics are made, it provides wood and fuel. The pod of the carob tree constitutes the basic food of the original peoples of the Chaco and it constitutes an important reserve of food in the drought years, alleviating negative consequences.
With the grinded pods flour is obtained that in the Chaco region of Paraguay is generally consumed only in its the fresh state, as its processing in other methods is limited. In the Argentinean Chaco indigenous women and peasants, have created and developed micro-enterprises that propose the processing of products starting from the carob pods. These microenterprises elaborated products taken from the traditional recipes as the patay (carob bread well done), aloja (fermented sweet tasting beverage that usually is drunk iced), the bolancho ( rissole with nosá (Ziziphus mistol) and carob pods), the añapa (fresh drink) the arrope or carob honey (sweet and dark liquid obtained boiling the carob pods in water over a long time) putting the emphasis on the creation of new recipes to prepare bread, biscuits, pud-dings, sweets, coffee, etc. With these new recipes the carob flour has taken on a more savoury a taste and has overcome the perception of a food exclusively related to past times.
These new positive activities are to be repeated in the Paraguayan Chaco and through training and encouraging the emergence of a community organization that covers the entire pro-cess from gathering , drying and grinding to obtaining flour, to then proceed to the processing of new products. At the end of the process the role that this fruit has in the daily diet will been strengthed and in turn new production methods will be developed that generate knowledge both at a technical level as well as a socio-economic level with market opportunities.
This video is part of a wider program of support to the native peoples of the Paraguayan Chaco and of the Bolivian upland described in an interactive visual audio document. The visitor can learn, about the complex and harsh reality that the natives of these two region live. We can see how the initial approach and then sharing everyday life with these people favoured their knowledge, their feelings, their traditions and habits; identifying with the involvement and the vision of the native people, culturally approved actions and activities, in order to achieve positive and sustainable changes. All the activities described are part of projects and actions that the NGO Cooperazione Internazionale (COOPI)- Milan (Italy), has realized and is still realizing in Bolivia and Paraguay.

SAFRANBOLU - CAN AKIN
SAFRANBOLU * CAN AKIN The cities show us that how a nation lived, what they succeesed in the past. Safranbolu was taken to the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1994 and there are 1131 historical monuments well protected in Safranbolu.
At the OWHC Meeting in Rhodes in 2003, Safranbolu was selected as one of the best preserved cities among 20 cities in the World. There are a lot of historical buildings in Turkey and some of them are scattered in another cities except for Safranbolu. The city of Safranbolu and its historical buildings, houses and culture are different. Safranbolu is very sumptuous with its historical houses and streets. You can feel history in Safranbolu.
Safranbolu is a treasure and most important example of preservation. It is like a time tunnel with its houses, fountains, castle, clock tower, mosques, inns, baths and bridges which have rich backgraund.
While you are walking on the streets, you can see historical houses, lean the old walls and drink water from old fountains.
Except for unigue historical buildings, Safranbolu has caves, canyons, plateaus, king graves, villages, grape and saffron gardens and delights. Safranbolu became important tourism centre.
We read history from books and see it in the museums. When you are in Safranbolu, you can feel, smell and see history. Would you like to look the history from this window opens from past to present? The Houses of Safranbolu and
Architectural Features of them
The most important thing that brings Safranbolu to the forefront in Turkey and the world is the Safranbolu houses which are an example of Turkish architecture. These houses are important due to their place in urban life and their architecture. In other terms, the Safranbolu houses are an important structure that continue to survive centuries-old to our modern day urban life.
The houses are in two parts of Safranbolu. The first are the houses in the Şehir (the town Centre and Kıranköy) and these are used in winter. The second are the houses in Bağlar and they are used as summer houses.
Almost everybody there has a winter house and a summer house. The residents in the region live in the town during winter and go to the summer houses in Bağlar when the weather starts to warm up. The production and trade in the Town Centre - Çarşı continues through the summer months as usual.
Three factors contrbute to the sizes and designs of the houses in Safranbolu: large families with many members, raining climate, cultural and financial richness.
Architects of today often emphasise the design of respect for the environment of the Safranbolu houses has. The relationships between nature-human-home, street-house and street-town is very structured and balanced. There is a great respect not only fort he environment but also to neighbours. No house prevents the view of another. In short, the view is equally shared in Safranbolu.
Stone, mud brick, timber and turkish roof tiles have been used to build the houses that are not only functional for use by people but also logically designed. No matter what the shape of the land is, the upper floors of the house are always contructed appropriatly geometrical.
The gardens are separated from the street with stone walls. The double wing doors lead to the garden and sometimes straight into the house. It is possible to see the grandeur at the entrance, the door.
As a result of the tradition of the separate quarters for men and women, some house have two entrances.
At the entrance of the house, there is the courtyard or foyer on the ground floor. Here, there is a wooden cage called a gliste to allow light to come inside and to help in drying out the wood which is stacked behind it. Also on the groud floow is the stables, large boilers and cellars.
A stairway, displaying skillful mastery in wood handicraft, takes you to the upper floors. İkinci kat diğer katlara göre daha basıktır. On this floor, there is a kitchen that can also be used as a bedroom. There is a wooden cylindrical turning cupboard between the kitchen and the mens quaters used for serving of meals. The daily living quaters are on the middle floor. It is easier to heat this floor on cold winter days.

SUMMARY
=======
The Minoan civilization was an Aegean Bronze Age civilization on the island of Crete and other Aegean Islands which flourished from c. 2700 to c. 1450 BCE, before a late period of decline, finally ending around 1100 BC. It preceded and was absorbed by the Mycenaean civilization of ancient Greece. The civilization was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century through the work of British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans. The name Minoan derives from the mythical King Minos and was coined by Evans, who identified the site at Knossos with the labyrinth and the Minotaur. The Minoan civilization has been described as the earliest of its kind in Europe, with historian Will Durant calling the Minoans the first link in the European chain. The Minoan civilization is particularly notable for its large and elaborate palaces, some of which were up to four stories high, featured elaborate plumbing systems and were decorated with frescoes. The most notable Minoan palace is that of Knossos, followed by that of Phaistos. The Minoan period saw extensive trade between Crete, Aegean and Mediterranean settlements, particularly the Near East. Through their traders and artists, the Minoans' cultural influence reached beyond Crete to the Cyclades, the Old Kingdom of Egypt, copper-bearing Cyprus, Canaan and the Levantine coast and Anatolia. Some of the best Minoan art is preserved in the city of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini, which was destroyed by the Minoan eruption.
The Minoans primarily wrote in the undeciphered Linear A, encoding a language hypothetically labelled Minoan. The reasons for the slow decline of the Minoan civilization, beginning around 1550 BCE, are unclear; theories include Mycenaean invasions from mainland Greece and the major volcanic eruption of Santorini.

SUMMARY
=======
John Ruskin (8 February 1819 – 20 January 1900) was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era, as well as an art patron, draughtsman, watercolourist, a prominent social thinker and philanthropist. He wrote on subjects as varied as geology, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany and political economy.
His writing styles and literary forms were equally varied. He penned essays and treatises, poetry and lectures, travel guides and manuals, letters and even a fairy tale. He also made detailed sketches and paintings of rocks, plants, birds, landscapes, and architectural structures and ornamentation.
The elaborate style that characterised his earliest writing on art gave way in time to plainer language designed to communicate his ideas more effectively. In all of his writing, he emphasised the connections between nature, art and society.
He was hugely influential in the latter half of the 19th century and up to the First World War. After a period of relative decline, his reputation has steadily improved since the 1960s with the publication of numerous academic studies of his work. Today, his ideas and concerns are widely recognised as having anticipated interest in environmentalism, sustainability and craft.
Ruskin first came to widespread attention with the first volume of Modern Painters (1843), an extended essay in defence of the work of J. M. W. Turner in which he argued that the principal role of the artist is truth to nature. From the 1850s, he championed the Pre-Raphaelites who were influenced by his ideas. His work increasingly focused on social and political issues. Unto This Last (1860, 1862) marked the shift in emphasis. In 1869, Ruskin became the first Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford, where he established the Ruskin School of Drawing. In 1871, he began his monthly letters to the workmen and labourers of Great Britain, published under the title Fors Clavigera (1871–1884). In the course of this complex and deeply personal work, he developed the principles underlying his ideal society. As a result, he founded the Guild ...
